Luke Stampini says Tyson Campbell has family in Atlanta and that Georgia is very appealing to him right now.

Bama is in trouble if they don't land a couple elite corners in this class.

Coynis Miller down to 3 schools, with commitment on the horizon

Coynis Miller has been a top Alabama target for more than a year now, but the Crimson Tide may have some catching up to do in order to land his commitment on Oct. 14.

Miller has said Florida is his No. 1 school since August with Auburn being his No. 2 choice. That leaves Alabama third, if we are to take Miller at his word.

But should we?

The nation’s No. 15 defensive tackle visited Tuscaloosa for Alabama’s game against Fresno State and will return to campus this Saturday for the Tide’s showdown against Ole Miss. That would mean he’s already been to two of the team’s three home games. He’s been to Auburn for the Tigers’ game against Georgia Southern and hasn’t been to Florida this season. It needs to be noted that Miller lives in Birmingham, so it’s obviously easier to travel to Tuscaloosa than it is to Gainesville and a shorter trip from Auburn.

Miller has only been to Gainesville once, but that’s all it took for him to fall in love with Florida. Sometimes in recruiting, one trip is enough for a recruit to choose that school. That could happen here.

One source who recently spoke with Miller told SEC Country that the in-state prospect believes that he’d fit in better at Florida rather than Alabama or Auburn. Another source said he believes it’s 50-50 between Alabama and Florida, which is actually a good thing because, like I said, he’s visiting Tuscaloosa this weekend. You can guarantee that he will have lots of attention from coaches. Miller will be repeatedly told how wanted he is by Alabama and how big of a priority he is when he’s in town on Saturday.

On multiple occasions, Miller has told SEC Country that Alabama is the school recruiting him the hardest via offensive line coach Brent Key, who is his primary recruiter. Miller has been building a relationship with defensive line coach Karl Dunbar as well.

The 6-foot-2, 300-pound prospect hasn’t been in my mock signing class for two months now, and I haven’t heard anything just yet to make me put him in there.

I spoke with SEC Country Auburn recruiting reporter Benjamin Wolk and Florida recruiting reporter Zach Abolverdi to get their takes on why they think Miller will choose the school they cover.

Wolk: “Relationships are everything in recruiting, and at Auburn, Miller has many. It started with the Tigers being the first Power 5 team to offer back in June 2016 when Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner was recruiting now-Tigers defensive lineman T.D. Moultry. As other programs have caught on, Garner and Auburn have always been there. Garner is one of the most proven closers on the recruiting trail and he’s never an easy position coach to turn down — especially for someone like Miller who has been so close to Garner for two full recruiting cycles. On top of that, Miller’s former high school teammate, Moultry, ended up at Auburn. Moultry isn’t the type to tell Miller what’s in his own best interests, but the connection won’t hurt. Neither will the fact Miller’s high school coach, Tim Vakakes — someone Miller respects and trusts dearly — is an Auburn grad. Last but not least, Miller has a long-standing friendship with Auburn running back commit Asa Martin dating back to his time in Decatur, Ala., before moving to Birmingham, and Martin seems to like the Tigers’ chances of landing their top remaining defensive prospect. In the end, Miller’s many connections to Auburn will be too tough to overlook.”

Abolverdi: “The Gators have recently had some success on the recruiting trail in Alabama, signing four prospects from the state in the last two recruiting cycles. A pair of those players, sophomore running back Lamical Perine and freshman receiver Kadarius Toney, have huge roles this season. Their presence and production on the team should help Florida’s chances with Miller, who named Florida his No. 1 school in August after visiting the school for the first time. He sees an opportunity for early playing time with coaches who aren’t afraid to play underclassmen. The Gators are still searching for a defensive tackle in the Class of 2018 and Miller may be their best bet at a quality prospect. Pulling him out of that state won’t be easy with Alabama and Auburn both being finalists, but Florida has a legitimate shot. I don’t think the Gators lead by a large margin, but right now, Miller says they’re the team to beat.”

If Miller chooses Auburn or Florida, the main defensive tackle targets to know are 4-star prospect Bobby Brown and junior college recruit Caleb Tremblay. Alabama also has a commitment from Stephon Wynn, who’s listed as a defensive end but could move inside in college.

All 3 of the SEC Country sites for Miller's finalists put out articles on him today. I'll post what is relevant out of the other two, but here is ours.

The Auburn article on Miller just regurgitated what the Alabama one said. In fact, it was word for word.

Coynis Miller sets decision date

One of the nation’s top defensive tackles is ready to commit.

Coynis Miller, a 4-star DT from Jackson-Olin High School (Birmingham, Ala.), plans to annouce his decision on Oct. 14. His finalists are Alabama, Auburn and Florida.

The 6-foot-1, 300-pound Miller is ranked the No. 15 defensive tackle and No. 162 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite.

SEC Country recruiting reporters Zach Abolverdi (Florida), Chris Kirschner (Alabama) and Benjamin Wolk (Auburn) break down the chances for each school below.

Why Coynis Miller picks Alabama

Kirschner: “While Coynis says Florida leads, I’ve always thought that he would choose either Alabama or Auburn when he committed. Miller has told SEC Country that Alabama was the school that was recruiting him the hardest. The Tide need several interior defensive linemen in this class, and Miller is near the top of the team’s wish list.

“Miller visited Tuscaloosa for Alabama’s game against Fresno State and will return this Saturday for the team’s game against Ole Miss. In recruiting, the phrase “follow the visits” is important. He will have gone to two out of three home games now. That’s significant. This weekend will give the coaching staff a big chance to lock in his commitment just two weeks before he announces, and I think the coaching staff can get it done.”

Why Coynis Miller picks Auburn

Wolk: “Relationships are everything in recruiting, and at Auburn, Coynis Miller has many. It started with the Tigers being the first Power 5 team to offer back in June of 2016 when Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner was recruiting now-Tigers defensive lineman TD Moultry. As other programs have caught on, Garner and Auburn have always been there. Neither will the fact Miller’s high school coach Tim Vakakes — someone Miller respects and trusts dearly — is an Auburn grad. Last but not least, Miller has a long-standing friendship with Auburn running back commit Asa Martin dating back to his time in Decatur, Ala., before moving to Birmingham, and Miller seems to like the Tigers’ chances of landing their top defensive prospect remaining. In the end, Miller’s many connections to Auburn will be too tough to overlook.”

Why Coynis Miller picks Florida

Abolverdi: “The Gators have recently had some success on the recruiting trail in Alabama, signing four prospects from the state in the last two recruiting cycles. A pair of those players, sophomore running back Lamical Perine and freshman receiver Kadarius Toney, have huge roles this season. Their presence and production on the team should help Florida’s chances with Miller, who named UF his No. 1 school in August after visiting the school for the first time.

The Gators are still searching for a defensive tackle in the Class of 2018 and Miller may be their best bet at a quality prospect. Pulling him out of that state won’t be easy with Alabama and Auburn both being finalists, but Florida has legitimate shot. I don’t think the Gators lead by a large margin, but right now Miller says they’re the team to beat.”

Have Alabama football recruiting questions? We have the answers. Join us every Wednesday for the SEC Country Alabama recruiting mailbag to discuss Crimson Tide recruiting.

This week, we discuss why it’s still not time to worry about recruiting, legitimate 5-star targets and the latest on JJ Peterson and Jacob Copeland.

Let’s get to your questions.

Is it time to worry? We only have 11 commitments, even Auburn has more.

From @Bama5000

Last time I checked, Nick Saban is still the coach of Alabama. Saban is arguably the greatest recruiter in all of college football. Until he retires from his job, then you can start worrying depending on who the school brings in to replace him.

The fact of the matter is the majority of the Crimson Tide’s targets remain uncommitted and are waiting to make their commitments. That’s why Alabama only has 11 commitments. I still expect this class to be in the top 5 or top 10 when the final rankings come out on signing day.

Who are our legitimate 5-star targets and where do we stand with each currently?

From @hackzubbard

There are currently 25 5-star players in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite. Alabama currently has a chance with 5 of them. Let’s break each of them down.

Patrick Surtain, CB, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)

Surtain is one of Alabama’s top cornerback targets in the 2018 class, but the Crimson Tide are trailing LSU, Florida and Florida State at the moment. Alabama has a chance to make up some ground for him when it hosts him on an official visit this fall.

The one thing the Crimson Tide can sell him on is the lack of depth at cornerback next season.

Micah Parsons, Jack, Harrisburg (Pa.)

Parsons doesn’t seem likely for Alabama at this time. His father told us that the family doesn’t plan on taking an official visit to Tuscaloosa this fall. If that doesn’t happen, there’s almost no shot Parsons joins the class.

Terrace Marshall, WR, Parkway (Bossier City, La.)

Marshall is a long shot, too, even though there’s a better chance of landing him than Parsons. The nation’s No. 1 wide receiver will take an official visit to Tuscaloosa this fall, most likely for the LSU game. The Tigers are viewed as the overwhelming team to beat.

KJ Henry, Jack, West Forsyth (Clemmons, N.C.)

Alabama has a very good chance at signing Henry when he makes his decision during the early signing period in December. I think it’s a 2-team race right now between Alabama and Clemson. Henry will take an official visit to Tuscaloosa this fall, but a date hasn’t been set yet. That visit will be huge for the Tide’s chances.

Tyson Campbell, CB, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)

Campbell visited Tuscaloosa in July and things couldn’t have gone better for Alabama’s chances with the team’s No. 1 cornerback target. There’s still lots of time left in Campbell’s recruitment, but this is trending in a positive direction for the Tide.

Why hasn’t JJ Peterson pulled the trigger yet?

From @michaelmore41

This is a good question that I don’t have the answer to. I’m surprised that the nation’s No. 1 outside linebacker hasn’t committed yet because Alabama has led for several months now, and I don’t think the Crimson Tide will ever lose their lead.

He’s a guy who’s all about hard work and competing for a spot. That’s what he loves about Alabama and has told me that on numerous occasions. It also helps the Tide’s chances with having Jeremy Pruitt on staff because the team’s defensive coordinator is good friends with Peterson’s coach Rush Propst. Pruitt was Propst’s defensive coordinator at Hoover High School.

Peterson has said he will make a decision after his senior season ends, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him commit before then.

I saw Jacob Copeland is visiting Alabama again. Is there legitimate interest?

The Florida wide receiver commit is expected to visit Alabama this weekend for the Ole Miss game. He was on campus for the team’s game against Colorado State, so this would be his second game in Tuscaloosa this fall. He hasn’t been to any games in Gainesville yet.

Copeland, the nation’s No. 7 wide receiver in the 2018 class, committed to Florida over Alabama in an SEC Country exclusive video back in August. Copeland told SEC Country last week that he hasn’t completely shut down his recruitment.

“Always gotta leave your options open,” Copeland said. “You never know what could happen at any given moment.”

What does that exactly mean? Well, he has some concerns with how Florida’s offense has looked so far. He mentioned how the Gators have struggled to score and the quarterback play being “wishy-washy.”

“All I can do is wait out the season and go from there,” Copeland said. “I committed to UF because they were there first and stayed with me. But, at the same time, I got to do what’s best for me at the end of the day. I haven’t lost interest in ‘Bama. That’s why I made my way down [there].”

If Copeland does make it to Tuscaloosa this weekend, you can definitely say that the interest is legit.

Eyabi Anoma

Anoma has been absolutely unstoppable this season and is headed for a rankings bump if this caliber of play continues. His burst off the line of scrimmage is second to none, and he can beat offensive tackles all day with just a speed rush. Anoma's hand techniques have improved exponentially since last season, and he has no problem shedding blockers now. Alabama, Maryland and Michigan are the top three contenders for Anoma, and Texas, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Arizona are pushing to get involved.

UGA visit "set the bar pretty high" for 5-star KJ Henry, reveals next visit

quote:

Georgia's home game against Mississippi State was one of the marquee games of last weekend and the Bulldogs hosted a number of highly rated prospect. Five-star K.J. Henry was in attendance for his first of five official visits. The Clemmons (N.C.) West Forsyth defensive end went in-depth on how he thought the visit went and released his next official visit.

IN HIS OWN WORDS...

"The Georgia visit went well," Henry said. "It was my first official visit and I think they set the bar pretty high. I had a good weekend. When you get a big win like that it certainly stacks in your favor. My family had a great time and I think everything went well. My dad didn't get to make it. I have both my grandpas, my mom, my brother, and my sister with me. I made sure they had a good time and they were well taken care of. They support me in everything that I want to do and they made sure I had a good time too.

"Elijah Holyfield was my host but I ended up hanging out with Justin Fields a lot too," he said. "After the game we talked to the coaches a little bit and then we went downtown to a nice little burger joint. We just hung out for the rest of the night. It was good being with some of the other recruits like Justin.

"I thought Georgia played very well," said Henry. "Last year I thought the thing that was holding Georgia back was their offensive line. They definitely played very well. The overall game, the intensity, and seeing how the crowd was made it a pretty good night. Beating a team like the Mississippi State like that, you have to give them a lot of props. I’ve watched Bellamy and Lorenzo go at it a lot in the past. I was there to just watch the game. I'm very aware of what they're capable of.

"My next visit will be to Virginia Tech for the North Carolina game on October 21st." he said. "That's the only one we have planned right now. I'm not sure if my dad will be able to make it.

"It's looking like my commitment is going to be one of my last days of school," Henry said. "It will be sometime the week of December 17th. I plan on signing and enrolling early."

RIVALS' REACTION

The Bulldogs are in the upper echelon of Henry's top five and continue to hold down one of those spots after this visit. His comfort level in Athens coupled with his relationships with the coaches and players make Georgia a force to be reckoned with him Henry's recruitment. Virginia Tech will get Henry's next official visit and the Hokies, along with Clemson, are one of the teams to beat. All of Henry's top five (Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia Tech) will get official visits and he will release the dates for each one as they are locked in.

It appears Jacoby Stevens made a great decision to sign with LSU over Alabama.

He's now been moved to H-back after being a 5-star Safety coming out of high school.
