WR Devonta Smith

High School: Amite (Amite, Louisiana)

Scout.com Ranking: No. 2 receiver; No. 24 overall

Schools to Watch: Alabama, Florida State, LSU and Miami

Prospect Analysis

Devonta Smith was on the verge of a college commitment shortly before his senior season but opted to postpone an August announcement following record flooding in the region. Even five months later, the group of contending teams remains consistent—Alabama, Miami and LSU—though they may have some late company.

This group of programs will aim to add a paramount offensive piece on national signing day, as Smith creates big-play opportunities on every target. The 6'1", 167-pound speedster is smooth after hauling in passes, proceeding to sprint past defenders for huge gains. Elite ball skills and an impressive wingspan make him a tough cover near the end zone.

Smith is also a threat on special teams. Even if he doesn't command a role in the receiver rotation as a freshman, his initial impact could come as a kick returner.

Prediction: Alabama Crimson Tide

This recruitment is about as murky as any on our list, though Alabama is considered a heavy favorite in 247Sports' crystal ball with 94 percent of experts' predictions. Miami feels like an underdog, but that staff will get its shot with an official visit later this month, while Florida State surprised many by securing an official visit earlier this week, per James Smith of NOLA.com.

It remains to be seen what the Seminoles accomplished, especially since his perceived "top three" has been established for months, but this may be another collision course between Alabama and LSU.

The sustained presence of receivers coach Dameyune Craig and hiring of highly respected offensive coordinator Matt Canada could have LSU trending in the right direction at the perfect time. Still, indications strongly pointed toward Tuscaloosa earlier in the process, and we're not quite ready to assume that outlook has drastically shifted.

DT Aubrey Solomon

High School: Lee County (Leesburg, Georgia)

Scout.com Ranking: No. 2 defensive tackle; No. 20 overall

Schools to Watch: Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and USC

Prospect Analysis

Aubrey Solomon was the lone interior lineman—on either side of the ball—recognized as a U.S. Army All-American Player of the Year semifinalist. His 6'3", 304-pound frame is ready for the rigors of college football, and he is a candidate to contribute in multiple spots along the defensive front.

Strength is a major asset, but so is speed, and these elements combine to create a wrecking ball up the middle. Solomon is balanced versus the run and pass, and he racked up 45 tackles—13 for loss—11 quarterback hurries and eight sacks through the first six games of his senior season, according to Chad Simmons of Scout.com.

Prediction: Alabama Crimson Tide

Michigan previously held Solomon's pledge, and head coach Jim Harbaugh continues to make moves toward bringing him back into the fold. The Wolverines leader and members of Michigan's staff spent time with Solomon's family during an in-home visit on Monday that featured go-kart racing and earned the title of "best visit ever" from the 5-star lineman's mother, according to Sam Webb of Scout.com.

That's not great news for his other finalists—Alabama, Georgia and USC—but Solomon was on record during U.S. Army All-American Bowl preparation stating the Crimson Tide are his leader "by a lot", per Jeff Sentell of DawgNation. This recruitment has featured so much ebb and flow that nothing seems imminent, but we'll bank on Alabama's strong track record of sealing the deal late with elite defensive recruits.

AMITE, La. — LSU has been recruiting DeVonta Smith for the length of his recruitment, but with less than two weeks until the star wide receiver signs on the dotted line, the coaching staff is hammering home an all-important message …

“Be different.”

For those that have watched Smith play in person or on tape, he’s already different.

Despite a smaller frame, the 4-star receiver is a fluid route runner, soft hands and will not be denied the football. Truth be told, those who have watched him ball suggest he could be a first-round draft pick at wide receiver or cornerback.

LSU has noticed, too.

Together, Tigers offensive coordinator Matt Canada and wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig have taken a slightly different direction with their recruitment of Smith. Offensive roles and opportunities aside, the LSU coaches have asked Smith to “be different” when he makes his decision.

“Come be different,” Smith told SEC Country, about what Craig’s message was during his official visit to LSU last weekend.

“Come be different and come to LSU. Be different. Don’t go places where they talk about throwing the ball. Here, it’s opening up. It’s opening up.”

Smith, the 6-foot-1, 160-pounder, is being courted to be an instant-impact player at LSU.

The Tigers lost senior receiver Travin Dural and junior Malachi Dupre to the NFL Draft. Only D.J. Chark, who hosted Smith over the weekend, is the proven veteran returning on the depth chart.

With that in mind, Canada, who has instilled confidence in Smith that he’s shaking up things on the LSU offense, suggested that if he’s willing, he could be a part of the turnaround.

“It’s a fresh start,” Smith explained. “Everybody else is on the same page as me because nobody really knows the offense. I can come in and I can play a big role, but that’s up to me.

“He wants to move me around the field, and that would be a great opportunity for me to do everything, any position on the field wide receiver-wise … in the slot, outside, it doesn’t matter.”

Canada is bracing for his first year in Baton Rouge, but at wide receiver and, from a big-picture angle, the passing game will certainly be a focal point this spring.

The coaching staff deems Smith a major piece of the puzzle if it can land a signature from the local standout on National Signing Day. Hence, that’s why both Canada and Craig will be in Amite, checking in on the 4-star wide receiver a day after Alabama assistant Billy Napier did the same.

Canada will be along for the ride considering his budding relationship with Smith. Likewise, his presence could further Smith’s view of this LSU offense.

“Just some of the things that he showed me offensively,” Smith began, “you get an idea of some of the things that they’re going to be doing. It (the visit) went really well, getting to know Coach Canada and know the things that they’re going through offense-wise.”

More takeaways:

-Smith officially visited Florida State earlier this week, but the ‘Noles are sitting fourth behind LSU, Alabama and Miami, who share the lead for the 4-star wide receiver.
-Smith’s family enjoyed the visit, most notably his mother.
-Smith appreciates that Canada and Craig are on the same page in their pitch to him. Both envision Smith being a focal point in LSU’s passing game.
-Can one team separate from the pack, and how? “That, I don’t really know,” Smith said, laughing.

So, he's saying not to come to places where they talk about throwing the ball, but that is all LSU is doing right now, right?

He dominated a Bama camp years back, like outshined Daron Payne level.

Not sure what happened at Tech, but he was quick with great hands out of HS...

He was given some real bad advice his senior year at Auburn HS, either by them or Auburn. He had a bad knee to start with, but some genius convinced him he needed to be bigger to help with injuries.

Thus some of the greatest highlights a LB has ever put on film the year before became very average senior film. Honestly, he looked better running the ball at that point than as a LB, his lateral movement was gone...

All due respect, who wants a DT from Texas Tech? That's like taking a kicker from Bama. He may have been great in camp, but he probably forgot how to play defense in that dumpster fire they call a defense.
