Another 5-star LB headed to Tuscaloosa?

A few weeks ago, I received word from an off-the-record source close to Alabama that 5-star linebacker Baron Browning was going to commit to either the Crimson Tide or Ohio State. That certainly was news to me because all I had heard prior to that message was Browning would stay in his home state of Texas and play for the Longhorns or Aggies.

The source also told me Browning wants to leave Texas for school. Again, that was another surprise to me. I didn’t report the story at the time because the source didn’t want the news out there at the time.

247Sports reported on Thursday what I just mentioned above — that Alabama is more in the mix than previously assumed. The nation’s No. 2 outside linebacker in the Class of 2017 from Kennedale (Texas) High School officially visited Tuscaloosa for the Texas A&M game, and he briefly told SEC Country after that trip what he thought.

“All I have to say is roll Tide roll,” Browning said at the time.

Now, am I willing to say that Browning is going to choose Alabama on Nov. 29, the day he’ll announce his commitment? Not at this time. He is going to take an official visit to Ohio State next weekend for its game against Michigan — just days before making a commitment. Spoiler: He’s going to love that visit just like every other recruit who visits a college campus.

Alabama, despite having three top-flight linebackers already committed in the class, would love to add Browning. He’s been one of the team’s top targets regardless of position ever since he was offered by the Tide. Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi absolutely loves Browning, and he thinks the Army All-American could be an instant impact type of player.

When the team faced Southern California earlier this season in Arlington, Texas, Lupoi, fresh off the jet from Tuscaloosa, showed up at Kennedale High School in a suit and tie. He didn’t stop at the team hotel to change. He wanted to be sure he made it to Browning’s game in time.

Browning is a wanted man in Tuscaloosa, so expect Alabama to continue pressing for him. If the Tide don’t land him, they have commitments from 5-star prospect Dylan Moses and 4-stars VanDarius Cowan and Markail Benton.

Thinking about Alabama landing Browning is a scary thought. Here’s what the young linebacker group would look like in 2017:

Sophomore, former 5-star prospect Mack Wilson
Redshirt freshman, former 5-star prospect Ben Davis
Sophomore, former 4-star Terrell Hall
Freshman, 5-star prospect Dylan Moses
Freshman, 5-star prospect Baron Browning
Freshman, 4-star prospect VanDarius Cowan
Freshman, 4-star prospect Markail Benton

What an unbelievable group.

Alabama 2017 class snapshot

Alabama has a good chance to have the nation’s No. 1 class for the seventh straight year, but it’s going to be tough. Ohio State is in the running for several more 5-star prospects, but Alabama also could land several surprise 5-stars such as Browning and offensive linemen Trey Smith and Isaiah Wilson. As it stands now, this actually might be Alabama’s best class because it has commitments from a top-class running back, two future play-making quarterbacks, a bookend left tackle and more.

Where it ranks?

Alabama’s 2017 class is currently No. 1 in the country. It passed Ohio State for the top spot once Jedrick Wills committed earlier this week.

As is standard in the Nick Saban era, the majority of Alabama’s commitments are of the blue-chip variety, meaning they are either rated 4- or 5-star prospects. For context purposes, the Tide have 22 pledges, including five 5-star recruits (RB Najee Harris, OT Alex Leatherwood, LB Dylan Moses, QB Tua Tagovailoa and WR Jerry Jeudy), 11 4-star prospects and six 3-star talents.

New commitments

There’s still plenty of time to go until National Signing Day, but most of Alabama’s class is already full.

Alabama’s newest commitment is Wills, the 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive tackle prospect who chose Alabama over Michigan, Tennessee, Kentucky and Notre Dame. The 4-star talent had been leaning toward the Crimson Tide since the summer.

Who could be next? Two defensive linemen could be Alabama’s next commits, as 4-star defensive tackle Elijah Conliffe could announce his decision this month and 4-star defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis is expected to make his decision at some point after his high school season.

The rest of the top targets Alabama seeks are expected to either make a decision in January or on National Signing Day.

HONOLULU — Shortly before beginning his coaching career at SMU as a graduate assistant in 2012, Timmy Chang, Hawaii’s all-time leading passer in high school football, thinks back on the kid who is on the verge of breaking his record of 8,001 career passing yards.

That would be Alabama 5-star quarterback commit Tua Tagovailoa, who only needs 87 yards to break Chang’s record in his final game before college.

As Chang was getting ready to leave Hawaii for his first coaching opportunity, he paid close attention to the younger quarterbacks who were on the island. One of those players was Tagovailoa.

“He threw the ball like he was one of the best quarterbacks in the state when he was in the eighth grade,” Chang, now the offensive coordinator at D3 Emory & Henry, told SEC Country. “There was no difference in his ball and the seniors in high school. He was actually better than a lot of the inexperienced quarterbacks in high school. He was doing it for such a long time at a high level. His ceiling was unbelievable and you just knew he was going to be special.”

Both Chang and Tagovailoa have a few things in common that have helped with the success they’ve had in football. Both of them played for Saint Louis High School, had the same quarterbacks coach in Vinny Passas and had legendary Hawaii high school football head coach Cal Lee at the helm for their respective careers.

Chang is familiar with Tagovailoa from his time in Honolulu, but they don’t talk much nowadays besides the occasional message over social media. The man who is second all-time in NCAA passing yards (Case Keenum is No. 1) from his playing days at the University of Hawaii believes Tagovailoa has a chance to achieve greatness when he gets to Alabama.

“He’s a special one,” Chang said. “Like I said, I saw him as an eighth grader and he was good then. He’s just gotten taller, stronger, faster and smarter. He’s going to be a good fit for Alabama. I know there’s a young quarterback there, but knowing him, he’s going there to compete. I think he’s a special one.

“He has all of the intangibles. He has thrown with a lot of great quarterbacks over the years. Marcus (Mariota) sometimes goes home and trains over there, and I know with those coaches, they’ve prepared him for the next level.”

Chang takes a lot of pride in being a former Saint Louis student, just like Tagovailoa. After practice on Thursday, several former Crusader alumni greeted the team before the state championship on Saturday against Kahuku. The alumni place stickers on the players’ shoulder pads signifying that the team is not only playing for themselves and their teammates but also those who came before them.

Tagovailoa said Chang’s support on his quest to break his record and to lead St. Louis to a state championship in his final high school game means more than what any stat sheet shows.

“With that support, it truly shows what kind of brotherhood we have over here,” Tagovailoa said. “It’s not just, ‘Hey, I want you to do this because this is what I did.’ It’s more so that these alumni are cheering us on because they want what’s best for the future of the kids. For me, I would want the same for other kids as well.”

That’s exactly the mindset Chang has when he thinks back to his successful high school football career. If anyone was going to become the state’s all-time leading passer, he would want the record to be broken by a Crusader.

Even though he graduated from Saint Louis 16 years ago, he still keeps up with the team and is going to be rooting for Tagovailoa to break his record and hopefully carry the Crusaders to a state championship.

“It really means the world to me,” Chang said of the possibility of Tagovailoa breaking the record. “I know more importantly to him, he’s had this game circled on his calendar for a long time. For him to do it in a game of this magnitude is special, but more importantly, the brotherhood wants a win.

“If I could see him, I would give him a big hug and thank him if he gets it done and wins. I really would. He’ll always be one of the brothers who wore the colors proudly.”

Ok so apparently the OSU mods on 247 still feel good about their info on Browning and aren't moving him from OSU yet. After Wiltfong put in for Bama the Bama mod followed.

That article reinforced that thinking saying no one is for sure yet but both sides seem to have positive indications.

I personally still think the timing lines up too perfectly with his last visit with his family and Okudah going with him and announcing the Monday after that visit. But Saban is Saban for a reason

Hank South doesn't typically put in CBs unless he's absolutely sure he'll be right.

However, if Tim Watts puts in a pick you can take that shite to the bank. He's the best in the business.

Him visiting OSU last is concerning. However, Tosh Lupoi being his recruiter is very good for Bama's chances. Lupoi is as good as there is in the country, especially now that he's established some relationships outside the West Coast.

Players at the end of the day will play where they want to play, normally they will talk like they want to play together, but they will go where they want to go when it's all said and done. With that said I still would be surprised if he picks Bama, but Hank was adamant the info he received was legit about Browning. We will see though

Kendall Randolph has never shied away from competition.

The Bob Jones tackle and Alabama commitment got to face the likes of James Clemens four-star defensive end LaBryan Ray and Buckhorn linebacker/Tennessee commit Will Ignont this season. Now Randolph will is set to go head-to-head with more of the country's top defenders.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Randolph received his Army All-American Bowl jersey this morning. The game is Jan. 7 at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio.

"I'm ready for the competition," said Randolph, who is No. 6 on AL.com's A-List rankings of the state's top senior recruits. "I've been working hard since ninth grade. This was my goal to go against the best players in the nation. I'm going to go out there and do my thing."

While Randolph and Ray were on opposing forces in past years, the Bob Jones star hopes that his crosstown rival joins him as a teammate in Tuscaloosa. Ray, the state's No. 1 recruit, is uncommitted and has Alabama among his finalists.

"I've been talking to LaBryan Ray," Randolph said, "trying to tell him how great Alabama is and how good of a decision it would be for him to make. Honestly, you couldn't get any better than that."

Randolph also stays in touch with the four other members of Alabama's talented offensive line recruiting class: Hunter Brannon (Cullman), Alex Leatherwood (Washington High, Fla.), Jedrick Willis (Lafayette High, Ky.) and Elliot Baker (JUCO transfer),

"Honestly, we're a family," Randolph said. "The five guys that just committed, those are my boys. We started a group message; we talk. Hopefully they'll all be down there during the Iron Bowl and we'll get to spend some time together."

Randolph committed to the Crimson Tide in July. He's rated the No. 20 tackle in the nation by the 247Sports Composite.
Randolph will be teammates on the East team with two other state players - Jackson-Olin linebacker and Auburn commitment T.D. Moultry, and four-star Lee-Montgomery receiver Henry Ruggs.

Henry Ruggs III graciously thanked the United States Army, his family and coaches Thursday at Robert E. Lee High School while accepting his invitation to play in the postseason U.S. Army All-American Bowl, but was at a brief loss for words at the end.

Ruggs, the star receiver ranked No. 2 in the AL.com A-List, was finally able to muster the words honoring his late friend, Rod Scott, who passed away last spring after an automobile accident.

Scott was verbally committed to play basketball at Jacksonville State after a stellar Lee career, but he's one of the main ones who convinced Ruggs to see how bright his star would shine on the football field.

"I'm excited just to live my life for him," said Ruggs, who has a tattoo honoring Scott on his leg. "It's tough just because he's not here anymore. I know he's looking down on me."

He's now a four-star recruit with a final five of Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Florida and Penn State, with many other Division I offers in tow.

Ruggs helped lead Lee to a 6-0 start, but the Generals had to forfeit their wins and did not make the playoffs. Ruggs caught 38 passes for 639 yards and nine touchdowns. He rushed 36 times for 446 yards and seven scores. He had 352 kickoff return yards and a touchdown and, forced into quarterback duty late in the year because of injuries, he hit 11 of 23 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl will be played in San Antonio and televised by NBC on Jan. 7, 2017.

"It's a great opportunity just to see the different levels of competition around the world and seeing what I'll be playing against at the next level," Ruggs said.

His coach, Tyrone Rogers, said Ruggs exemplifies what it means to play in the Army game.

"He's tough, a hard-working kid, team-oriented," Rogers said. "He's just a dynamic football player. There's nothing that he can't do football or basketball-wise. Outside of sports, he's an outstanding young man."

Ruggs said he will attend the Iron Bowl on an unofficial visit and wants to take official visit to his top five schools, though none are set just yet.

"Depending on how the official visits go, if I get that feeling, I might commit when I'm there," Ruggs said. "If not, I might just wait until Signing Day.

"If I get a couple of visits out of the way and get that home feeling, I could make a commitment at the Army All-American Bowl."

Alabama quarterback commit Tua Tagovailoa won an impressive award Thursday night. The nation's No. 33 overall player won the Cover 2 Marcus Mariota player of the year award.

The award honors the top player in Hawaii as awarded by KHON.

It was named after Oregon's Heisman-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Tagovailoa was also named the Elite-11 MVP earlier this Spring.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder committed to Alabama in May. He has national offers including USC, Oregon, UCLA, Texas A&M and countless others.

I spoke to a couple of people about five-star outside linebacker Baron Browning, and things have taken an interesting turn. Alabama is now trending strong for Browning, who is still slated to make his decision on Nov. 29. Texas still has a shot, but the Strong situation is creating dark cloud around this recruitment. Perhaps no recruit is closer to Strong than Browning. Texas should be worried here.
