Here is how the AL.com A-List performed this week.

Several top prospects were off or injured, but the ones that played had big nights for the most part. Nico Collins continued his playmaking ways. Chadarius Townsend had a monster night. Markail Benton got a defensive score and Brian Robinson put up numbers in limited action.

A-Listers LaBryan Ray and Kendall Randolph squared off with Randolph's Bob Jones Patriots knocking off James Clemens.

Players' college commitments are in parentheses.

Stats were provided to AL.com unless otherwise noted.

1. LaBryan Ray, DL, James Clemens - Ray was held in check by Bob Jones tackle Kendall Randolph as the Jets lost 28-20 to Bob Jones in the Madison Bowl. The Patriots got most of their yardage through the air, though, and not much on the ground.

2. Nico Collins, WR, Clay-Chalkville - Collins had five receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown. The Cougars beat Walker 36-14.

3. Austin Troxell, OL, Madison Academy - Troxell (Auburn) and Madison Academy beat Sardis 42-7, finding plenty of success through the air.

4. Markail Benton, LB, Central-Phenix City - Benton (Alabama) had four tackles and a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 42-14 win over Auburn. He leaped over a potential tackler to reach the end zone.

5. Ryan Johnson, DL, St. Paul's - Johnson played sparingly in St Paul's 49-8 win over Wilcox Central. He and the Saints held Wilcox to 97 total yards and six first downs

6. Brian Robinson, RB, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa - In a 49-17 win over Northridge, Robinson (Alabama) rushed nine times for 101 yards and three touchdowns, playing just the first half in the blowout, per the Tuscaloosa News.

7. Will Ignont, LB, Buckhorn - Ignont had seven tackles, 3.5 for loss with 1.5 sacks. He ran five times for 19 yards and two touchdowns. Buckhorn lost 29-22 to Sparkman.

8. Kendall Randolph, OL, Bob Jones - Randolph (Alabama) and the Patriots beat James Clemens 28-20, not getting much on the ground but passing for 300-plus. Randolph neutralized No. 1 state prospect LaBryan Ray in the win.

9. Alaric Williams, RB/ATH, Southside-Gadsden - Southside beat Fort Payne 34-31, but Williams is out with a knee injury.

10. Henry Ruggs, WR, Lee-Montgomery - Lee (2-0) was off

11. T.D. Moultry, LB, Jackson-Olin - Jackson-Olin (2-0) was off

12. Chadarius Townsend, QB/ATH, Tanner - Townsend (Alabama) and Tanner beat West End 41-16. Per the Decatur Daily, Townsend scored four touchdowns, rushing 18 times for 291 yards. Touchdowns included runs from 82 and 95 yards.

13. Justin Thomas, DL, Spanish Fort - Thomas (LSU) returned a fumble 39 yards for a score in a 38-10 win over Gulf Shores.

14. Malcolm Askew, QB/ATH, McAdory - McAdory was off

15. Neil Farrell, DL, Murphy - Farrell (LSU) and Murphy lost 43-0 to McGill-Toolen. Farrell had a pair of sacks, a batted down pass and three tackles. He did not play in the second half due to the lopsided score

The toughest challenge Monty Rice ever faced was coming to the realization that he was not unstoppable.

The three-star linebacker from James Clemens experienced his epiphany when he was a freshman at St. John Paul II. Though young, Rice was bursting at the seams with talent and started at running back and linebacker.

"As a freshman, I felt kind of invincible," he said. "I felt like I couldn't be touched."

All that changed in the fourth game of the season. Rice caught a pass against Butler and gained a big chunk of yardage. But while one tackler held his right leg, another defender knocked Rice out of bounds. Rice suffered a broken leg and had three pins put into his knee during surgery.

"That taught me, 'You're not invincible,'" he said. "No one's invincible. You can be beat. You can be touched."

Rice's recovery was supposed to take about nine months, but he didn't follow doctors' orders not to run or jump. Instead, he played basketball with friends and recovered in about six months.

Change of scenery

Rice left the two-year-old program at St. John Paul II after his freshman year to play at three-year-old James Clemens. He made a quick impression on Wade Waldrop, who was in his second year leading the Jets. Waldrop and his staff watched Rice in a couple of JV games and practices. The youngster's raw athletic skills were impossible to miss.

"I think in one B-team against Huntsville, the first night we really got to see him play," Waldrop recalled, "he probably had 20-something tackles in a game that only had eight-minute quarters; which is crazy. The next week he started for us, and he's been starting ever since."

Rice went on to record 91 tackles in just eight games.

"He was really raw," Waldrop said. "He's gotten so much more polished at his position and taken so much good coaching. He's really playing the position at a high level to go along with the athletic ability, which everybody saw from Day 1."

Rice followed with a stellar junior campaign in which he made 135 tackles, including 11 in the backfield. He also picked off three passes and forced three fumbles. College teams took notice. Schools such as Kentucky and UAB offered late in the year.

On everyone's radar

Rice's recruitment exploded this past February with five offers from Power Five programs, including Alabama and Auburn. His top nine, released in mid-July, included the Tide, Tigers, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida State and Michigan.

The chance to play in the SEC is an attraction to Rice.

"It's pretty exciting," said Rice, whose hobbies include eating (he loves wings) and reading articles online. "It's the best conference in the nation. It's where all the championships go through."

Rice is rated three starts and the No. 22 inside linebacker in the nation by the 247Sports Composite. However, his offer list more closely resembles that of a four-star recruit. Rice said the rating doesn't motivate him.

"It is what it is," he said. "I know know five-star guys who can't compete with our two-star offensive lineman Brody Collier."

Waldrop described Rice as the quintessential linebacker: Physical, doesn't shy away from contact and sets a tone for the defense.

"Where he's made strides is understanding reads, fits and pass coverage," Waldrop said. "He's so talented. Sometimes guys like that have a hard time learning how to play the position the right way because they can line up and rely on athleticism. He's gotten better every week that he's been out here."

Rice will look to continue that trend Friday as James Clemens faces crosstown rival Bob Jones in the Madison Bowl. The Jets' defense - which also features the state's top recruit in defensive end LaBryan Ray and Alabama commitment Kyriq McDonald at safety - allowed just 133 yards of offense against Gardendale last week. But the Rockets returned two early fumbles for touchdowns and won 26-13.

"It motivated me a lot," Rice said of the loss. "I'm already motivated because I love football, but when it's against Bob Jones, it will be a special game. It would be be big to get our first win of the season against them."

Sarkisian may have a positive impact on Harris’ commitment

Before Alabama had offered Najee Harris and before the team ultimately landed his commitment, Southern California had offered him a scholarship shortly after then-Trojans coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff made a trip to Antioch, Calif. Sarkisian had made Harris a priority for Southern Cal throughout his tenure as the Trojans’ coach.

Alabama confirmed the hiring of Sarkisian as a special assistant to the offense as he gets back on his feet professionally after battling alcoholism.

“We talked about it really quite a while ago and I told him that we’d love to have him as part of the organization,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said at his press conference on Monday. “He’s going through some personal things himself to get himself in a very positive position and wants to continue to do those things in the future and professionally. He loves coaching. I’ve known him for a long time and he’s a very, very good coach.”

Harris was close with Sarkisian when he was at Southern California, and that’s a good thing because the more relationships he has at Alabama, the more likely he is to stick with his commitment.

“Najee was cool with coach Sarks,” a source close to Harris’ recruitment told SEC Country. “Coach Sarks is a really good person. We knew he had a drinking problem when he was at USC, but Najee and I have nothing but love for coach Sarks.”

Harris is also close with Saban, Lane Kiffin, strength coach Scott Cochran, running backs coach Burton Burns and outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi. It’s that last name that may be the most important to the Tide’s chances of keeping Harris on board.

When asked how big of a deal it was to Harris that Sarkisian was now at Alabama, the source made it clear that Lupoi being there is important. The assistant has had a relationship with the Harris camp ever since the prospect was an eighth-grader and when Lupoi was an assistant at the University of Washington.

“The real relationship is with coach Lupoi,” the source said. “Tosh believed in me when I told him about Najee years ago when he was at Washington, and I said that he was the next top athlete to come out of the Bay Area.”

Washington is one of the schools looking to flip Harris, along with Southern California, California, UCLA and Michigan. The Trojans are likely the team running in second place. And, before you ask, a 52-6 win over a school he’s also considering doesn’t matter to Harris one bit.

All signs continue to point toward Harris sticking with his commitment, though. As the days go by and I keep talking to more and more people, I am getting more confident with predicting Harris will be a part of the Crimson Tide in 2017.

With the season started, the Mid-Atlantic region's top-rated prospects are inching closer to their commitments. The waters are getting murky, but Big Ten, SEC, and ACC teams all have a shot with these four big-time players.

OLB Drew Singleton

The situation: For months it has been Michigan versus Clemson for Singleton and, depending on who you ask, both and neither could be leading at any point. A few other teams are in the mix after visits in August, but this will likely come down to Michigan and Clemson.

The frontrunner: Michigan

The ebb and flow of the recruiting process has seen Singleton's interest in Michigan fluctuate. It looks like the Wolverines are back on top after Singleton and Paramus Catholic played a game in the Big House and took an unofficial visit last weekend, then said he will also take an official visit to Ann Arbor. I expect the lead to go back and forth between Michigan and Clemson at least a couple more times before Singleton signs his National Letter of Intent.

The other option: Clemson

Singleton was back at Clemson in July and continues to be high on the program and coaches. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables has a very strong relationship with Singleton and his family. Clemson will definitely be getting an official visit from Singleton as well.

But don't count out: Alabama

The Crimson Tide hosted Singleton in early August and he came away as impressed as one might expect. He has said he will take an official visit there too. Watch for Auburn and Rutgers to possibly get Singleton's last two official visits.

RB Anthony McFarland

The situation: This was supposed to be a big season for McFarland, but unfortunately it was over before it started. He broke a bone in his leg in mid-August during a scrimmage and will spend the rest of his senior year recovering. McFarland is still focusing on his recruitment and released a top five of Miami, Maryland, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida. A decision is expected at the Under Armour All-America Game or on National Signing Day.

The frontrunner: Maryland

The Terps have been heavily involved with McFarland since day one of his recruitment and he remains their top target in 2017. The injury hasn't discouraged head coach D.J. Durkin and McFarland was back on campus in College Park again for the opening game against Howard. The relationships he has with the players, coaches and other students on campus are all stronger than with any of the other schools in his top five.

The other option: Miami

The Hurricanes have been steadily closing on the lead position in McFarland's recruitment. He still needs to visit Coral Gables again before moving Miami any higher on his list, but there is some reason for Hurricane fans to be optimistic. Mark Richt and Thomas Brown are the best weapons Miami has to fight for McFarland and they shouldn't be taken lightly. Miami was set to host McFarland for the Florida State game but those plans have not been confirmed since the injury.

But don't count out: Alabama

It seems like Alabama has been trending downward with McFarland since early August. The injury certainly doesn't help Alabama's interest level in McFarland, but it still sounds like he will take an official visit to Tuscaloosa. He had planned to visit for the Iron Bowl but he hasn't confirmed those plans since getting hurt.

WR Mark Webb

The situation: Georgia has been the leader in Webb's recruitment for a long time, but Alabama and Penn State are giving chase. Look for a commitment from Webb in the next week or two, possibly on Sept. 16 when Archbishop Wood hosts Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph's.

The frontrunner: Georgia

Webb, the cousin of Rivals100 running back D'Andre Swift, is closing in on a decision and the Bulldogs have to love that Georgia's newest commitment is related to him. The two have been planning on going to the same school pretty much since they started getting recruited. Webb has visited Athens plenty of times, feels very comfortable in that atmosphere, and he believes in the coaching he would get there.

The other option: Alabama

The Crimson Tide have been gaining ground for Webb since he visited this summer. The facilities, mentality and coaching are all things he really liked. Look for Webb to find his way back to Tuscaloosa for an official visit before National Signing Day.

But don't count out: Penn State

The Nittany Lions have historically done well at Archbishop Wood and Webb really likes what Penn State has done with its wide receivers over the past couple years. He gets along great with the coaches and players as well.
