We may be adding a JUCO DT to our 2016 class. We offered this guy last night:

Josiah Coatney Highlights

USCe offered yesterday as well. Word over on BOL is he just found out he will be able to graduate in May meaning he can enroll in his school of choice this summer.

Thoughts?

Coatney was originally part of the 2014 class and was rated the No. 51 strong side defensive end in the country, per the 247Sports Composite.

I found this on the USCe 247 site:

quote:

Loganville (Ga.) Grayson 2016 three-star defensive end Mykelle McDaniel did not sign with any school on signing day and continues to hear from multiple schools, including Mississippi State, Alabama and South Carolina. The 6-foot-4, 255 pounder took an official visit to Starkville over the weekend, and the current plan is for McDaniel to make an official visit to South Carolina next month during spring practice. He does now have an ACT score on file, which is what was preventing him from taking visits earlier in the process. Defensive line coach Lance Thompson is heading up his recruitment for the Gamecocks. Should he qualify and pick the South Carolina, he would be a nice post-signing day addition.

South Carolina has also offered Holmes C.C. defensive lineman Josiah Coatney, who will take an official visit to Columbia on March 19. The 6-foot-5, 285 pounder is also planning to visit Alabama before making a decision. Coatney is originally from Douglasville, Ga., and is a prospect the previous staff recruited out of high school. He is looking for great coaching and player development plus the opportunity for early development, all of which the Gamecocks can offer.

It appears Coatney had some serious grade issues in high school and it really affected his ranking. A poster on the USCe site posted this:

quote:

I noticed on Coatney's time line that after the Georgia Jr. Bowl, he had a rating of 94. By signing day he dropped all the way to a 79! Guessing grades as the reason. His Juco tape looks great! Looks to be a 3 technique which we definitely can use if Sawyer moves to SDE as rumored.

For reference, a player rating of 94 would put him around #115 overall.

JUCO LB Gary Johnson's high school coach posted this on BOL:

quote:

Absolute beast.... He ran a 10.79 and won the 5A 100M @ around 210-215 lbs. (in his only year running track). Plus, he didn't even use starting blocks because I couldn't ever get him comfortable using them.... lol.

Oh... and his leg was hurt from landing wrong in the long jump @ sectionals the week before.... His long jump there was 21 feet.

Pretty good looking OL prospect from Opelika that nobody's ever heard of. Looks like a good SEC OG in a few yrs.

Man I would love to add Coatney and especially Gary Johnson. Having a guy like that in the middle would make sure no qb scrambles.
