Because elite QBs have been few and far between in the state of Alabama. Always nice to keep those home.

Bama lost the last elite QB to come out of the state too.

Stanford is a great school and he has a lot of admirable ambitions beyond football but (maybe a complete homer) i find it hard to believe that commitment sticks if he is or becomes #1 on our QB board (Saban playfully continues to refuse to let me see the board).

From an "insider" on BOL on West:
quote:
Had a TERRIBLE camp this summer. Very underwhelming. Wanted to commit to Bama. He was told to wait until next year. It is what it is

Exactly. We have how many 4 to 5 star QBs on our roster right now and were bringing in another 5 star.
Why the hell should we care? I wouldn't mind if we didn't go for one next year or if we did only going for Mayden's brother.
QB is not a need position and this is not Pokemans. We do not have to catch them all.

I get the luster of a Stanford degree, but if West's goal is to run for a political office in Alabama, he'd be better off getting a Bachelor's from UA and then a Master's from Stanford or another prestigious school. He would be far more relatable to the populace here if he went to an in-state school.

That schtick is getting old when a prospect chooses to go elsewhere. Especially when it's unexpected. Where was this breakdown of his talent prior to the news?

I'm not trying to start a pissing match here, because I certainly wanted West, but he dropped like a rock in the latest Class of 2018 rankings by Scout. He was a Top 60 prospect before the last ranking and is now #208. Allan Walters, the legacy out of New Jersey, dropped like a stone as well. He's now #235.
Jalen Mayden, Jared's little brother, jumped up to #68 though.

And just like that, we have a 4-star 2018 QB from California coming to T-town this weekend:
Cameron Rising Highlights
Rising is ranked #48 overall by Scout.
quote:
Four-star quarterback Cameron Rising out of Newbury Park (Calif.) tells BamaOnLine he plans to visit Tuscaloosa this coming weekend, a trip that wasn’t scheduled as of a week ago.
“It’s just amazing, you know?” Rising said of the offer. “Alabama, that’s big time right there. If you’re a football player, you pretty much always dream of having the opportunity to play at Alabama.”
One of the assistants on the Newbury Park coaching staff, Joe Smigiel, was a graduate assistant alongside UA offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin at Fresno State.

Rising is ranked #48 overall by Scout.

As a sophomore, Rising passed for 3,213 yards and 40 touchdowns and rushed for 756 yards and another 11 scores.

Which is exactly why I don't sweat losing a blue chip instate player. This isn't 2004 where missing on a top instate player is a crushing blow. I'd love to land every 4+ star player instate, but if we miss on one we'll find one of equal or better talent elsewhere 9 out of 10 times.

I wouldn't say I'm happy to lose the out of state kid, but if there was any school (other than UA) that I would want my own kids to attend on a football scholarship it would be Stanford.

Another BOL "insider" on West committing to Stanford:
Best of luck to him.
ETA: What the frick Condolezza???? You're supposed to be a plant by the REC to control the CFP!! How could you let this happen???
quote:
About a week ago I got some info on Jack that I wanted to post, but I didn't want to get the board up in arms. I've posted before that I live in Saraland, but don't know Jack personally. My wife's cousins are good friends with Jack (one of them went to prom with him recently). I was told last week that he was very high on Stanford due to him wanting to enter into politics. He went on a visit recently and met Condolezza Rice and it made a huge impact on him.
Best of luck to him.

Oh, I'm sure Stanford arranged it. Isn't she teaching there?

I don't know if she is teaching there, but I know she is on some speaking tour.

Exactly. Not mad at Chatta at all. My annoyance is directed at the "insider" on BOL he referenced. It's old. If the guy had said that before this news, no problem. Saying it afterward just sounds like a douche.

I mean, there are some people who get good info, for sure. But most just recycle info, read tea leaves and hope to be accurate, or flat out guess. Usually you can tell if you watch long enough when someone has good info and when they don't.
I get almost all recruiting info from here. I have a friend in Football Ops at Bama and he's only twice in 5 or 6 years ever told me ANYTHING about a recruit (told me Cyrus going to AU was a legit concern). That's it. I've gotten good info on coaches from him and from a couple of other coaches and an agent I know, but next to nothing about recruiting. They take that aspect of their job too seriously to be loose with comments, IMO.
