- Byron Cowart had a great visit and UA is now in his top group along with FSU. He should visit again this spring.
- Trent Thompson has raved about his visit, so UA will be a factor, but UGA is still the clear leader. He'll bring his mom with him to T-Town later this year. NSD decision.
- Elite 2016 DE Shavar Manuel traveled with Cowart this weekend. He enjoyed his time, and there is a long way to go, but its a Miami-Alabama battle at this point.
- The optimism has faded on Bo Scarbrough. He's a longshot at this point to get qualified. Things are alot better when it comes to Dom Jackson. If he stays on track, he should arrive this summer.
- Dallas Warmack had a productive meeting with Coaches Saban and Cristobal. He firmed up his commitment over the weekend.
- Richie Petitbon is considered to be an Alabama lean at this time. He should visit with his family for A-Day. He could commit while he is here.
- Texas Tech is a serious contender for Jarrett Stidham, but his folks supposedly love the SEC. Even with the recent offers, Kiffin is still evaluating QB prospects.
- Top DE James Lockhart out of Texas is now considering playing out of state, which may help Alabama. DB's Holton Hill and Ronny Elam are two other Texans to keep an eye on.

im not super familiar with the rules, but i always wonder why in kids go juco in these situations instead of a prep school that doesn't start their college eligibility?
Because prep schools are much more expensive than JUCOs. I'm not sure about the athletic scholarship situation unless you're Brendan Frasier in "School Ties." I'll have to ask one of my circle of friends who attended prep school. But without a scholarship, you're looking at ponying up mucho dinero to attend. Top end ones cost way more than Harvard per semester, though I suspect the lower end ones are somewhat more affordable...relatively speaking.

The same way you get a girl with low self-esteem into bed by treating her like dirt?
Honestly, I have no idea why anyone would make that pitch unless they're desperate to gather as many 3 stars into the fold as possible. Which, now that I think about it, we are, so....

BR Power Ranked the top DEs in the 2015 class:
quote:
9. Byron Cowart
Size
6'4", 250 lbs.
School
Armwood High School (Seffner, Fla.)
Byron Cowart helped lead the Hawks to 14 wins, serving as a formidable defensive presence. He tallied 72 tackles, 13 sacks and returned two fumbles for touchdowns.
Scouting Report
Cowart is built with the physicality of a middle linebacker. He is a battering ram who brings down ball-carriers in the backfield at a prolific pace.
Quick feet give him a jump on blockers and he pursues with proper angles. Given his agility, he can assist in intermediate contain coverage along the perimeter.
Cowart needs to add more moves to his pass-rushing arsenal in order to excel at the next level. A reliance on strength and bull rushing will result in him being swallowed up by larger offensive linemen in college.
Recruitment Status
He recently attended a junior day at Florida State. The Seminoles should be considered among the favorites in this race, along with Alabama, Oregon, Florida and Auburn.

7. Mekhi Brown
Size
6'6", 230 lbs
School
Carver High School (Columbus, Ga.)
Mekhi Brown made strides while starring for the 11-win Tigers. He racked up 56 tackles, five sacks and three fumble recoveries.
Scouting Report
Brown primarily focused on basketball as a young athlete so his football skill set remains relatively raw. His strength and wingspan allow him to overpower opponents without implementing substantial technique.
He delivers punishing hits and wraps up at the point of attack. Brown shows full effort in pursuit and doesn't take plays off.
He is clearly still growing into his large frame. Balance and coordination are his biggest issues.
Recruitment Status
Brown committed to Alabama as a sophomore. He still lists Florida State, Stanford, USC and Georgia in his top five.

3. CeCe Jefferson
Size
6'2", 250 lbs
School
Baker County High School (Glen Saint Mary, Fla.)
The Wildcats reached the playoffs with CeCe Jefferson paving the way on defense. He collected 68 tackles and 17.5 sacks, per MaxPreps.
Scouting Report
Jefferson is ferociously scrappy. He is a hard worker with a high motor, relentless against the run.
Jefferson's abilities allow him to cut the field in half and dominate his side of the line. He swiftly disengages from blocks and makes tackles from all kinds of angles.
He is a disruptive pass-rusher who features enough athleticism to line up off he edge in a stand up position. Jefferson is capable of driving an offensive tackle deep into the backfield in an attempt to cause offensive mayhem.
Recruitment Status
Jefferson recently visited Florida State and Georgia. Possible destinations also include Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Notre Dame.

Landon Collins
Landon Collins was pushed into full-time safety action for the Crimson Tide once starter, Vinnie Sunseri, went down with a knee injury; Collins responded well, proving that he was capable of filling the void. Now, in 2014, Collins has to prove he can be consistent, while assuming a stronger leadership role in the back end.
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, the safety opposite Collins in 2013, is expected to be a first round pick come May, and that means the Tide have an opening in the secondary. Add in the fact that Deion Belue, a cornerback, is gone, leaving Alabama even less equipped to fix the issues that plagued the secondary in 2013. For Collins, as players look to win jobs around him, getting the secondary on the same, and correct, page will be job one.
As far as safeties go, Collins is the total package. The rising junior can come down in the box and make tackles, he runs well to cover plenty of ground and when given the chance he can turn defense into offense. 2014, as the elder statesman in the back end, Collins will have to prove he can be the leader in the secondary.

Jacob Coker, Quarterback (Florida State to Alabama) - The backup to Jameis Winston saw the writing on the wall about his future at FSU and decided to take his final two years of eligibility to the university he always loved. The Mobile, Ala. native will graduate from FSU and go to Alabama to compete for the starting job this fall in a crowded field. If he wins, he'll be the starting quarterback of the school he grew up rooting for.

quote:
DJ Pettway, Defensive Lineman (Alabama to Alabama) - In a rare situation, Pettway will be returning to the school that kicked him out in the first place. Pettway was a party to a pair of assaults and robberies for which three other players were kicked out of school for. After a season at Eastern Mississippi Community College, the university allowed him back in. He'll be back this fall and head coach Nick Saban looks forward to having him making plays again.

quote:
Jarrett Stidham (Stephenville, Texas)
The dual-threat playmaker accounted for 44 total touchdowns last fall. Stidham is a serious force in the open field once his 6'3.5", 190-pound frame gets churning.
He compliments his quickness with pinpoint passing on the run. Stidham has largely flourished in a short yardage passing scheme and there are questions about his velocity.
His offers include Oregon, Oklahoma, Baylor, Alabama and Texas Tech.
Posted on 3/3/14 at 4:45 pm to TideSaint
quote:
Zach Gentry (Albuquerque, N.M.)
Gentry is among the most skilled offensive recruits in the southwest. The 6'6", 230-pound prospect is impressively mobile for a player of his stature and rushed for 16 touchdowns as a senior.
He has significant progress to make in the accuracy department. Gentry remains in a relatively raw stage as a passer but is a project worth investing in.
Tennessee and Oklahoma State rank highly on his expansive offer list.

quote:
Blake Barnett
Size
6'3.5", 195 lbs.
School
Santiago High School (Corona, Calif.)
Blake Barnett bullied defenses during the 2013 season, throwing for 2,300 yards and 22 touchdowns in 10 games, per MaxPreps. He missed some snaps early in the season due to an injury but managed to lead the team with 695 rushing yards and 13 scores.
Scouting Report
Barnett is athletic enough in the open field to excel in an option attack at the next level. He is an underrated rusher who picks up yards in a hurry.
Barnett's strength allows him to fire strikes on the run, maximizing his scrambling abilities. He can be excitable in the pocket and get careless with fundamentals at times, especially when it comes to his foot placement.
His guts as a passer can get him into some precarious situations. Barnett will fire throws into space that shouldn't be tested.
Still, he has a big-time arm that becomes even more dangerous in a spread offense.
Recruitment Status
Notre Dame landed a commitment from the Southern California recruit in November. His other options include Alabama, Michigan and Arizona.

Byron Cowart
Was reading on the FSU 247 site and apparently there is concern there that Cowart's school Armwood High School steers players away from FSU. Newberg denied it, but most of the posters seemed adamant about it. It's a TIFWIW piece of information, but if this info is valid and UF bombs this season it could help us land him. His mom will be a big part of wherever he lands.

I think it has more to do with how close the prospect was to qualifying
Close to qualifying -> 1 year at prep school
Not close -> 2 years at juco
