Da'Shawn Hand was lucky to keep his No. 1 ranking. Hand is a tremendous football player. Nobody will dispute that. He's going to have a nice career at Alabama and play on Sundays after he's done in Tuscaloosa. But would he have made it to Signing Day as the top player in America if this were any other year? That's questionable at best.

Hand's high school stats and film were great, but he wasn't consistently dominant against top-level competition. He was always among the top performers at elite-level camps and all-star games, but there were relatively few moments that saw him steal the spotlight and solidify himself as a level above everyone else.

There were plenty of internal conversations about a change at the top. But, in the end, no other player stepped up to knock Hand from his perch.

David Cornwell may never start at Alabama. Let me be clear that Cornwell is the most talented quarterback Alabama has recruited in the last four classes. I have been a big fan of his game since I first saw him as a junior. There is a legitimate Ryan Mallett comparison there when we talk about arm strength, but Cornwell is the kind of quarterback who is going to thrive when the offense revolves around him. With the talent Alabama puts on the field, though, they need a distributor, a game manager. They excel with guys like AJ McCarron at the helm, not Johnny Manziel and from a football standpoint I see Cornwell being more Manziel than McCarron.

AJ was a gunslinger before he was reined in by coach Saban. I trust in his ability to mold a QB to his liking.

With multiple updates of Class of 2015 prospect rankings throughout the recruiting industry on Tuesday, the 247Sports Composite Rankings now feature several seismic risers across the country, including Mississippi linebacker Leo Lewis, who simply put is a bad, bad man (probably the highest compliment you can pay a linebacker).

quote:

1. Leo Lewis, LB, Brookhaven (Miss.) (+142)
Lewis is at the top of the board at linebacker for multiple SEC programs and checks in at No. 95 overall. After watching his film, the athletic, physical ‘backer could end up ascending even higher throughout the cycle- he’s a bad, bad man on film. Current Crystal Ball predictions have Alabama at 90 percent currently.

And Saban had gunslingers at Michigan State and LSU. It's an all-around lazy statement to make.

6. Richie Petitbon, OG, Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga (+42
The grandson of former NFL coach and All-Pro safety Richie Petitbon, the younger Petitbon is a prospect that is extremely high on the boards of college coaches who have evaluated him because of his low bust potential and raw tools available for development. He checks in at No. 93 overall. Crystal Ball says Alabama (76 percent) over Penn State (24).

Talk about taking speculation to the extreme. Plus, Cornwell seems much more of a team-first type guy than a diva from everything I've seen from him so far.

And wasn't it Cornwell who said he'd be happy throwing for only 50 yards a game as long as his team wins?

The race to replace A.J. McCarron as Alabama's starting quarterback begins this spring, with Blake Sims, Alec Morris, Parker McLeod, Cooper Bateman and early enrollee David Cornwell vying for the lead in the race.

Sims is the veteran backup who's the most experienced of the bunch, Bateman is the former hot-shot recruit, and Cornwell is the new kid on the block with the big arm and huge upside.

This will undoubtedly be the most widely discussed position battle of the offseason, but the reason that it's not at the top of this list is that it won't be settled this spring.

Cornwell is coming off an ACL injury that cut his senior season in high school short, and even if he participates in spring practice, new offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin will want to see him at full strength with a full grasp of the offense during fall camp.

Former Florida State backup and rising junior Jacob Coker will join the competition in fall camp after finishing up his degree, and there's no way Kiffin and head coach Nick Saban would bring him in without giving him a chance to win the job in 2014.

The Alabama quarterback battle this spring will be interesting because it will produce one and perhaps two primary contenders for the job, but the battle won't begin in earnest until Coker arrives on campus this summer.

Alabama pass defense was an illusion last season. It looked great on paper after giving up just 180.3 yards per game though the air, but games aren't played on paper. On the field, Alabama's defensive backs struggled often—especially when they were tested by mobile quarterbacks who had the ability to stretch the field with their arms.

Recently departed starter Deion Belue was picked on at times and only had one pick on the season, and head coach Nick Saban was forced to use a revolving door of young defensive backs at the other starting cornerback position.

Hot-shot prospect Tony Brown enrolled early to get a jump start on fellow freshman Marlon Humphrey for playing time, and will join Eddie Jackson, Bradley Sylve, Geno Smith, Jarrick Williams and ultra-versatile Cyrus Jones in a spring position battle for playing time in a talented yet unstable defensive backfield.

Watching the crowded crew battle for position will be intriguing as the spring progresses.

Although he is 6'4" and 222 pounds, Christian Miller has a frame that needs more physical development. Miller has solid strength, but the 4-star pass-rusher still needs to bulk up and add more mass to his body.

Bulking up and getting stronger would help Miller set the edge with more power and force at the point of attack. He's a future star who just needs to get bigger.

While 5-star cornerback Marlon Humphrey is effective in zone and off-man coverage, his 6'1", 175-pound frame needs to get stronger. The reason is because Humphrey struggles some in press-man coverage due to him not having a strong jam to reroute receivers at the line.

With his long arms and athleticism, Humphrey has the potential to develop into a disruptive press-corner at Alabama.

Bulking up will help turn that potential into reality.

Deionte Thompson is a 4-star safety with the hips of a cornerback. At 6'2" and 181 pounds, the Texas native is not afraid to mix it up with anyone on the field.

Thompson has fantastic speed for a safety, but he's even more explosive in short areas. He flashes solid hands, plus he'll fill alleys versus running plays.

Alabama doesn't need any more running backs, but don't tell that to 4-star recruit Desherrius Flowers. An in-state get for the Crimson Tide, Flowers is already 6'1" and 212 pounds.

He has a powerful running style that is based on strength. Flowers has no issues challenging defenders at the point of attack, plus he also has the ability to carry defenders for extra yardage after contact.

Mekhi Brown is a 5-star defensive end from Georgia who can also stand up and play outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. At 6'6" and 230 pounds, Brown has great athleticism and quickness to crash off the edge.

He has quite a bit of explosiveness, plus Brown has impressive length. He'll need to get stronger, but he's an elite prospect in the 2015 class.

At 6'3.5" and 190 pounds, Jarrett Stidham is a 5-star quarterback with above-average size to see over the rush from the pocket. However, he's not the most polished and mechanically sound passer in the country.

What Stidham does have is great arm strength and athleticism. He flashes explosiveness in his drops, plus he can jolt upfield after wiggling around rushers. If a quarterbacks coach can harness the Texan's skills, Stidham could be a gem in a few years.

Texas Tech, Oregon, Baylor and Alabama are among several schools he likes, says 247Sports. Look for Stidham to be a Red Raider.
