Chris Owens’ play at Center

I went back and looked at the game snap by snap, in regards to Owens’ play at Center. I personally thought he did a pretty good job with the exception of 1 or 2 plays. The difference I see in styles with him and Dickerson is that Dickerson was stronger and able to hold or move forward the point of engagement. Owens appears to be more of a technician that most times can hold the point of attack, but I see where he often blocks his man in a manner that takes the Dlineman out of the position to make a play. What do my Tide brothers and sisters think?

He had a bad PFF grade but I attribute that to a lot of the 2nd half run up the middle crap every play. Also ND has a good Dline

I want to preface this by saying PFF individual grading numbers are................yea I mean whatever
But they exist so here they are
Run Blocking (OL)
1. Evan Neal (78.7)
2. Alex Leatherwood (71.4)
3. Emil Ekiyor Jr (61.5)
4. Chris Owens (51.7)
5. Deonte Brown (45.6)
Pass Blocking (OL)
1. Alex Leatherwood (79.2)
2. Evan Neal (62.0)
3. Deonte Brown (46.7)
4. Emil Ekiyor Jr (42.8)
5. Chris Owens (27.9)
Pressures Allowed
1. Emil Ekiyor Jr (3)
1. Deonte Brown (3)
3. Chris Owens (2)
I feel like he did a fine job early on when we were running all our stuff. He struggled a little once we decided to slow everything down and the opposition zeroed in on it, but that kind of makes sense.

No way PFF spends as much time grading CFB teams as much as they do NFL teams.
Also they can’t really factor in “garbage time” you see often in college more so then in the NFL.
Though they do love Bama’s offense this year. So I’ll take it

Yea, they aren't very good at it. I mean, there isn't much else to say. Their advanced stats are really good, but the grades are blah.
And they don't even attempt to differentiate their grades between opponents, which is why every positional Top 10 has 3 MAC guys and 2 CUSA dudes.

I thought he did a good job. Team must think so too as he was included in the post game press conference.

He did well. He held up on his own. Speaking of that, did anyone see Dickerson walking around without a crutches? Made me wondering what kind of injury he suffered.

I rewatched as well and thought he held his own just fine against an above average DL. I would assume OSU and ND have a similar DL quality.

Notre Dame impressed me. They lack the talent at wide receiver and defensive back but they are tough on the lines of scrimmage. Also well coached and disciplined. No extra curricular activities. Only had one or two penalties. It was a pretty clean game by both teams.

It’s funny ND has built a team to compete against our 2012 team but we have just moved on from that style

They're a solid, well-coached football team. They just don't have enough skill guys to compete with the 2-3 best teams in America.
I get Kelly's frustration in the postgame presser basically having to defend the fact that his team is better or equal to everyone in the country except Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson, as if that is some sort of unique problem to Notre Dame.

Their academic standards are the barrier for them to compete against the Alabama's and Clemson's of the world. Their recruiting pool simply isn't as deep. Kelly is a very good coach. I don't know what the solution is for them. It has to be frustrating.

Notre Dame is very much like Stanford when they were playing hard in the PAC 12 in recent years. They are a power running team with a big offensive line and employ multiple tight ends. Well coach, tough, smart team. Yesterday was frustrating at times because of that. Ohio State will be very different.

No bad snaps that I remember or off sides on him. So I thought he did great.

1. No bad snaps: check
2. Calls and adjustments at the line: unobserved, but a good ND front 7 didn't crush Mac repetitively, so an assumption can be made that it went well.
3. Blocking assignments: in run and pass blocking, he didn't become a noticeable weak spot or point of penetration by ND.
Being those are a Cs primary roles, I think it went as well as can be expected. He is a very experienced player with, no doubt, a lot of reps with the OL.
Dickerson has a bigger body, a personality and presence, and trust of the team. He can't be replaced easily. But, Owens did very well IMO on a big stage.

Agreed - I mean, he isn't going to be as powerful as Dickerson is, but that is what it is.
His job is to call the game, snap the ball, and not get blown up. He seemed to do that effectively?

I guess this is a good a thread as any to ask this question, but what exactly is Dickerson's injury?
He looked completely fine on Friday. I watched him for 20 minutes pre-game and he wasn't limping.

He had surgery to fix the ligament damage in his knee.

Owens is a fine back up, and if he helps us win a natty next week he will be a hero. That said, he just isn’t a dominant player. I’m surprised Dalcourt has not taken that spot by now with all the practice buzz we heard from him early in his career.
