In a column regarding future SEC schedules when Texas and Oklahoma join, Chip Brown (who thinks it's going to be four pods with Texas and Texas A&M not in the same one) of Horns24/7 said, "As far as when Texas and Oklahoma would join the SEC, I'm still hearing their first football season in the SEC would likely be 2024, when ESPN takes over the broadcast rights for SEC football."

Pods do more harm than good. 3 fixed yearly opponents without pods (or divisions) works much better.

I think pods are more intended/interesting to folks who want an intraconference playoff to crown a champion. It probably will never happen, but since Sankey floated the idea of an SEC-only playoff, never say never.

A 3 fixed opponents with 6 rotating and no divisions (or pods) seems to be what Sankey prefers from SEC meetings. The cons are the Vanderbilts etc who want only 8 conference games with 1 fixed opponent for more easy out of conference games to get into a minor bowl game - and minor bowl games are becoming more minor every year. ESPN, who will take over our tv deal in 2024, will want the 9 game conference schedule to have more prime matchups for tv. AD's too want bettter ticket sales that another SEC game brings, as opposed to playing Mercer or Citadel.

It appears that's what we're gonna get. Here's more on Sankey's plans for it.

So much for the Alliance . Feels like Kliavkoff got played.

How long before we get Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Miami?

I don't think those are the ACC schools we would go after if they're the next conference to begin falling apart. None of them do anything to expand our geographic footprint or add TV revenue. We'd be more likely to go after the North Carolina and Virginia schools.

Typically I would agree with you, but if the B1G isn't done expanding as is what is being implied all of those schools would be important to a super league plus the Carolinas. Brands are going to be more valuable in a 2 super league setup than they were before. I would question the value of the Virginia schools.

While I know geography is barely a factor anymore, it still is a positive for a conference as a whole if there's some semblance of regional cohesion... even if that region is expansive. USC and UCLA look ridiculous being in the Big Ten.

As for the SEC... it's going to have Alabama, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Auburn... there's just no one left in the country to add to compete with that football wise. Even if the Big Ten added ND, it's still a distant second in football and always will be.

But basketball is where the SEC can still really boost itself and still geographically make some sense.

Duke
North Carolina
Va Tech
Florida State

Not sure about Virginia. Not a good cultural fit, but neither is Duke... although UNC joining would probably force Duke to jump at the chance if offered. You get a top basketball school (post-Coach K?) that also boosts academics and gives Vandy a natural rival.

Or you can let woke Duke join Virginia in their fantasy Ivy League and go Va Tech, UNC, Clemson or NC St and FSU.

What I'd hate to see is the SEC going out to Colorado and Arizona. Just no. Austin, TX has to be the line going west. I guess there's the Phoenix TV market, but it's just not worth stretching the conference that thin.

Nah, man. It locks up the DC market.
Here’s who I think they pursue:
VT, UNC, Duke, GT/MIA.

Of the ACC schools UVA is a great fit. You can always find monied UVA alums in every southern city and UVA still represents the south although I know they have a woke component.

I mean I could have missed it but from my time in DC neither VT (Blacksburg is an outpost) nor Virginia gives you the DC market. They weren't relevant when I was there but that was a while ago. They are the equivalent to BC, which is in a pro town. The only college squad that held any sway there was Maryland basketball.

USC & UCLA are turrible fits for the B1G. The west coast is just too far away. Let's fly tons of people and equipment across the country for USC & UCLA vs Maryland, Rutgers, Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, Iowa & Wiscy. The Alliance already failed to justify PAC vs B1G games.
