Coaching is a business. Saban allegedly spoke to MSU's AD and Deputy AD at length about hiring Mel Tucker. MSU's AD did admit he spoke to Saban about the job. That shows what Saban thinks about coaching jobs...get the best one you can regardless of how long you're on your present job.

I'm sure he helps most of the Bama coaches going after an upgrade. I just don't recall Saban going so public with it. Do you?

No, I don't recall him being so public about endorsing a coach either. Coaching for Saban three times has its privileges I guess.

He is lining Mel up to come back on his staff if it doesn't work out

Or, if it does work out he'll recommend Tucker to succeed him.

Do you think coach Saban was lying?
I don't know, nor do I care. Coaching is a job just like any other. I'm not going to tell my employer that I'm on my way to an interview for a different job. What evidence do you have that Tucker lied to anyone? When he made those statements he could have very well been 100% on board with Colorado. Then Sparty calls his agent up with an 11th hour desperation offer he can't refuse and that changes things. If a report leaks that a coach who is currently employed is considering other options it creates an impossible situation. Deny it and you are accused of lying if you end up taking a new job, admit it and it makes your job untenable in the future should you end up staying, because everyone now expects you to leave. It's a no win situation for the coach.

So he wasn't lying when he said it, he was just lying when he actually took the job somewhere else?
Coach-speak is tricky. Best not try that stuff at home.

What the hell are you talking about? Their coaching search was a disaster. Everyone turned them down. It is entirely plausible, in fact highly likely, that they initially offered him a raise from $2.7M to something like $3M. Michigan State isn't such a better job than Colorado that a modest raise like that is worth leaving, so Tucker turns them down. Then their other targets turn them down. Media asks Tucker about his status as coach, and having already turned down the offer he says he isn't leaving. 30 minutes later a desperate Michigan State AD calls his agent with an offer to double his salary. He then accepts their ridiculous offer because someone in his position would be insane not to. If someone offered you a job doing what you currently do for a living but with 2x your current salary you'd do the same.

I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to put your value system on me. I've already spent a lifetime proving you wrong. These supposed "similar" scenarios about Bama fans being offered a job upgrade is ridiculous. The last thing you are describing is the same situation or responsibility that Tucker found himself in.
Let's compare apples to apples:
You run a department that allowed you to recruit your personal help. They quit their job and they come to work for you because they realize you’re a master craftsman and they want to learn from the best. You promise every one of them, 25 in all, that if you leave your job, take the risk, I’ll hire you and I’ll be there to teach you everything I know. A few are naturally having some apprehensions about taking this "leap of faith." I mean, you are talking about the biggest decision in this person's life and it's scary. So being a good boss you try to reassure them, 'look, bring your family in here, bring your kids and wife, or husband, I want to talk to all of you. I want to say this to everyone. I'll never leave you hanging, I'm not going anywhere, I promise. If you quit your job, believe in what I'm saying and come to work for me, I'll be there to teach you everything I know. I won't leave.'
Your promise, your word to the people you recruited to work for you. How’s that new job offer looking now?

I was curious where you learned all about the detailed lies Mel Tucker promised his staff in order to hire them.

I THINK bamameister was comparing the 25 employees in his scenario to 25 football recruits.
