I have seen this referred to on another board as well...and I don't think everyone is making it up. But I have never read this myself as a quote or coaching point by any coach.
I can't imagine teaching a DB to not locate the ball if the DB is in phase with the WR. But I have also never been asked to help Saban and Smart with their DB technique,
ETA: One of the things I would always tell my players was that there is usually more than one fundamentally sound way to play any position on the field. However, the correct technique is always the one in which your current coach teaches you...no exceptions. So if our CBs are taught to not locate the ball then that is what they should do.

No.
IMO, they are told to look for the ball, but also read the WR's eyes/reaction, and sometimes our players gets lost on that.

That is my suspicion as well. At least until I can find something that proves me incorrect.
Only time I see telling a DB to focus on the WR and NOT locate the ball is when he is beat. Then you focus on the WR and close the separation...locating the ball in this scenario is obviously a disaster as the separation would increase.

If the DB turns his head to locate the ball and cannot make the play he is totally burned and its a TD most likely.
Just wanted to add... I think this is an exaggeration.
I also think that in the end we will see the technique being taught is a combination of eye focus that allows the DB to locate the ball, as a poster above said.
Playing WR eyes may be taught...but I would bet they are taught to locate ball as the eyes widen...which is still locating the ball.
No matter the technique, I see no benefit of not locating the ball if the DB is in phase. Because he is still there to make the tackle and has a better chance at a PBU or Int.
Of course I could be guilty of looking at this much too simply...it happens.

Thanks.
That makes sense and explains why some have interpreted that to mean we don't teach to locate the ball etc. I think.
Saban teaches to locate the ball if you are in phase.
I will also add, just as someone mentioned in that thread that being "in phase" is an extremely difficult place to be.
Every DB I ever coached heard this almost every practice, "Its not a matter of if you are going to get beat it is just a matter of when you will get beat and then how you are going to respond."
A DT misses an assignment and gets beat we may not notice it...if a DB does the same everybody sees it. It takes a mentally tough athlete to play there.
Obviously, Cyrus is our best option or he would not be out there...even if he is out of phase more than we would like.

He is the best option right now and wont be passed while he is here at least imho. Now if Tony who plays field which tells me he is just not ready for the boundary and the run support that it requires. If he ever gets technically sound to where he is in phase more than not then I think he will be great. He has the body for it and the speed to make up for a mistake.
The biggest part of all this is that he made the field as a freshman, here at Alabama where we redshirt 5 stars. That tells me enough about him to expect great things. No guarantees though.

Bradley fricking Sylve.
Feels good to be one of his few defenders after the WV game.
ETA: Cyrus is still (by far) our best CB

No doubt he was solid tonight and Sylve was huge.
But any team that has time to stretch the field on us worries me. Partly because of the pressure we put on or corners on a consistent basis and partly because of their inconsistent play.
I would only rank FG kicking as more inconsistent than our corner play.
Its about improving, whether its a team or an individual. Tonight is one of the few nights I feel like Cyrus really made a leap forward...I hope that is the case because it will not get any easier.

When Sylve doesn't have to cover Kevin White he does alright. Does he have any eligibility after this season?

Junkie is going to call you crazy for saying such a thing. But I truly agree and been telling people to give him time, since his play last year. His lack of height is made up with his feisty play. Not saying he is the Bama standard we are use to seeing under Saban, but he will get much better with time.

In all fairness, K. White is arguably the second best WR in college football. I kinda wonder has Eddie lost some of his speed due to the knee injury. If he can't re-gain it, Saban and Kirby might wanna look at him as a FS. He has long arms, decent speed, and plays the ball when in front of him very well, which would be prefect for a FS.

Have not watched any of the replay...yet.
But from what I saw Sylve seemed to be false stepping on some of the routes that beat him.
The knee may have turned those false steps into much bigger problems...however he did not seem to be seeing what he needed to see.
ETA: I am thinking Jackson..not Sylve...its getting late.
So disregard that analysis...Jackson was false stepping.

quote:The reason I wondered is because an athlete of his caliber is normally capable of recovering when false stepping or "opening the gate to soon" when playing off man coverage against a QB of Nick's caliber. Hopefully he doesn't get to down and has a short memory, which is needed by all corners.

Ill eat crow gladly. Ill accept my lashes. EJ let me down. Glad for Cyrus, he shut me up.

Just glad we can have football talks about guys with so much potential, compared to teams with little to no talent.

Its not like the criticism for Cyrus has not had merit. Hopefully he continues to improve as do the others.
EJ had a terrible half. Playing CB in today's game is similar to being a QB. If you can't get over your mistakes then you will not last. Hopefully EJ has the mental toughness to bounce back.
