That limits the coaching pool to southerners. I don't like that.

Meyer is from Ohio, you think Ohio produces good coaches?

But as has been pointed out, people like Saban and Meyer who aren’t from the South were successful because they “got it.” You don’t have to speak with a drawl to “get it.” Mike Leach was from California and he “got it.” Kalen DeBoer, for whatever reason, still doesn’t “get it.” One would think after last year he would.

The cradle of coaches. That said, he's from Toledo, most of them come from the Ohio Valley.

Bo Schembehler, Ara Parseghian, Jim Tressel, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Woody Hayes, Paul Brown, Jim Harbaugh, and Marcus Freeman are all from Ohio.

Were you serious?

Yes, it does. Most of these hires on all levels are incestuous.

I was obviously sarcastic. They're no good since they're not from the south. Gotta eat grits to coach at Bama.

I know some people in our fan base who still see football as a front in the unending “War Against Northern Aggression” actually might still think that, but one would hope that being in the 21st century and seeing Saban’s success would show them otherwise.

Frank Thomas (the coach) was from Muncie, Indiana, BTW.

Stop hiring coaches who do not know how to shut down a one dimensional team.

LOL, at these stupid takes.
I'm not saying Deboer was or is a good/bad hire. He's turning out to look like the Northwest's version of Mike Dubose without the scandals; however, Deboer was the best hire at the time.
Who would have been the right hire who "understands the SEC?"
JImbo Fisher was available L-O-L!

Let's look at some non-SEC coaches who turned out to be pretty good:

Steve Spurrier - came from Duke
Urban Myer- came from Utah
Nick Saban- came from Michigan State

I mean Saturdays' loss was not even SEC. It was a mediocre ACC program coming off a 2-10 season last year. Let's not get carried away about "bad hires". It was an outside the box hire by Byrne just like the basketball hire with Nate Oates. One turned out to be good and one turned out to be so far - not so good; however, at the time it was viewed as a very good hire.

And he got run off at South as head coach. But yet DeBoer thinks he can be the defensive coordinator at Alabama. SMDH

You mean Steve Spurrier the Heisman Trophy winner from….(checks notes)….Florida?

The larger point is don’t hire someone for a bigtime SEC job that isn’t used to the bright lights and the 24/7 pressure. Nothing on DeBoer’s resume indicates he was familiar with this type of job/cutlure.

I’m not going to link him because I got in trouble posting from someone everyone hates last night, but go to YouTube and watch a 10-minute clip of Colin Cowherd and John Middlekauff of 3 and Out talking about this situation, and they’ve got it nailed even better than Cam.

And Middlekauff relates something about DeBoer from his time at Fresno State that starts at 2:59 that makes me want to throw up my hands and start campaigning for firing him right now, damn the buyout, and strangle Byrne for actually thinking this would work at Alabama.

The bullet points:

1. College football is a sport where regions matter, and some coaches simply are not cut out to work in certain regions. It was mentioned that Kirby and Dabo might have difficulty outside the South, and that Saban might not work at a school with a laid-back vibe like Southern Cal. DeBoer is simply off center at Alabama.

2. Alabama wants, craves someone who’s large and in charge like Saban because it benefits everyone because you know he’s going to lead you in the right direction, and not just players but the fans, the school, everyone feeds off that.

3. Middlekauff said he went to a Fresno State-Arizona State game a few years ago and was tailgating and had a conversation with someone who’d played for both Jeff Tedford and DeBoer. Dude said Tedford was old-school intense, Sabanesque, but DeBoer? “Well you know, Kalen is really kind of mellow, he’s not a rah-rah guy.”

Mellow ain’t going to cut it in Tuscaloosa.

I'll wait for his players to dominate the roster before I make that call.

And he went back to his Alma mater in 1990. So what are we missing here about Spurrier being an “outsider?”
