So this begs the question, what’s the point of a potential high draft pick playing any further games once his team is out of playoff contention?

If this starts to happen, the powers that be would quickly expand the playoffs. Not only to 8 teams but 16.

The regular season would be shorten to 10 games and the conference championship games would be eliminated.

College football's greatest fear would then happen, the regular season would be ruined.

I would say any current player who decides to sit the bowl out should not be allowed to make the trip & enjoy the bowl experience.

Unfortunately, I think that is where this is all heading

The SECCG is an awesome event for our league, but if we (and other leagues) elected to drop it, I wouldn't cry foul if it yielded the following:

(1) Each team must play 11 of 12 games against P5 teams
(2) Expanded conference schedule to 9 games
(3) 8 team playoff

Everyone's biggest fear about an expanded playoff is the diminished regular season - and it's fair. The big games like LSU/Alabama really do feel like playoff games in their own right.

However, I still think that if you improve the quality of the regular season, you can without a doubt maintain the importance of it.

Take this year for instance: Say we opened on a neutral field with Oklahoma instead of Duke, and played at Arizona State, and hosted Florida instead of playing host to Western Carolina and NM State in front of a 75% capacity crowd.

Moreover, how awesome would it be to have a home playoff game against say, Oregon? Or as it stands, go between the hedges in mid-December and play UGA? How much better would that be? For rounds 2 and the final, you would keep the same rotation, as-is.

The regular season we just played was so lame-duck, it very well could cost us a shot at the playoffs.

The above would allow for (1) better, more interesting games that fans want to attend, (2) protect the sanctity of the regular season, and (3) does not extend the season for student-athletes beyond what they currently have to play.

In a universe where all P5 conferences have 14 teams, this still means that only 11% of the teams would make the playoffs. If almost ~90% of your teams aren't making the dance, then the regular season clearly means something.

So what to make of the rest of the bowls? You still keep them. I imagine they'll probably hover around the same level of interest they do now. It's the football equivalent of the NIT as it stands, present day.

I don't think we should ever go past 8, and I think it's a number everyone could agree upon for a long time.

Give me 8 conferences where every team plays each other every year. Winner of each goes to the playoff.

SEC
ACC
Northeast
B1G
Metro
Southwest
A Mountain and Big Eight combo
PAC

First two rounds are played on campus, so you benefit if your conference is strong.

Honestly, I don’t know why people don’t complain about the neutral sites more. When we play three straight neutral sites to end the season, that’s a ton of money out of my pocket.

This sounds nice, but we could just as easily play Duke, Oregon State, and Syracuse + Vandy from the East. The bigger the postseason gets, the more incentive there is to schedule poorly because it’s easier to get in. Pre-BCS teams had to play exceptional schedules to prove themselves.

The only way I could get behind a bigger playoff is with a dramatic reshaping of the conferences.

Based on what the playoff committee said why we are ranked higher than Oregon I think we have a really good shot actually.
