Can she hit as well?
Posted on 6/4/23 at 5:30 pm to Night Vision
Idk and we definitely need to improve our hitting.
Murphy is seen nationally as a top 5/top 10 coach in college softball. I am just wondering who people who want him fired think we could bring in thats better.
The only article I can find ranking college softball coaches has him 5th.
College softballl coach ranking
They have it as
1. Gasso
2. Alameda at FSU
3. Perez - UCLA
4. Walton - Florida
5. Patrick Murphy
Seems about right to me.

quote]And the number of transfers the last couple of seasons should raise some eyebrows somewhere.[/quote]
For evidence of this, Lexi Kilfoyl and Megan Bloodworth, both highly touted players that MURPHY recruited are still in OKC playing ball tonight for Okie State. So why did they leave Tuscaloosa? Kilfoyl was the heir apparent to Montana and was playing when she wasn’t hurt.
Megan Bloodworth was the #10 ranked recruit out of high school, started 45 games her freshman year and hit 7 HRs which ain’t too shabby considering our hitting.
So why did they leave? PT? They both appeared to get plenty of that. This is not an abberation, it’s a trend. And most of these players leave and flourish. Is it because they don’t feel like they are being developed?
You can recruit top shelf talent all day long, but if you don’t develop it and you can’t keep it on campus, it’s not worth a damn.
And you can point to Murphy being a top 5 coach all you want; a few years ago, he would have been considered top 2 or 3. He is sliding down the rankings just like his team is. How far do we let him take this team down? We haven’t won the SEC regular season title in since 2019 and have only one other time since the natty. We have finished as low as 5th twice since 2019. We have only won the SEC tournament once since the natty. This team is regressing, plain and simple.

I get what you are saying but if you nitpick it, Bloodworth is hitting below .200 with 2Hr, Lord transferred to Ole Miss, hardly played and is in the portal again. Goodnight was hitting .290 with 1HR at UGA just like at Bama (was not sad she left) . I was sick that Lexi left, not going to lie . I did see an interview with her and she said she wanted to go somewhere where “they care about you and your injuries “ or something of that nature . Not sure if she had a problem with Murphy, our training staff or both . I just hope he follows through on this hitting coach and hits the portal for several bats . Being optimistic I know
ETA- TLDR- some May have been encouraged to leave . Kilfoyl (injury ), Wallace (position choice) and Sides (no idea) are exceptions

The Sides transfer was the most concerning.

one of the most concerning things to me is, it looks as tho these gals never set foot in a weight room. it's no wonder they cant get a ball out of the infield against decent pitching.

We need a solid weight program, but anyone decent out of high school should be able to more than hit it out of the infield.

I talked to some local people in the softball scene in Metro Atlanta last weekend at my kids tournament who know anything and everything about the goings on in elite high school/travel softball and they all were talking about how the Alabama situation with Murph has run it's course.
And these are people who are almost reverent in talking about what Alabama has built in terms of softball the last 20 years - just as softball people who coach the sport and a lot of it's elite young players. They just basically said the thing is broken and it does not sound like Murphy seems to get it or is willing to admit it's broken. They all see it as almost something that because of his initital refusals to change and to keep trying to play the way he used to.......led to offensive issues.....which led to him being defensive about it........which led to more issues......which led to being more defensive. A vicious cycle.
And that defensiveness apparently has everything to do with girls leaving the last few years. There was a specific story about Dallis Goodnight and just wanting to get more swings in that was absurd.
Long story short - it's not good, and even people who see our program as the gold standard of Southern softball and have for a while are saying that things are about to collapse.

I think someone mentioned it previously, but most of our players do not involve their lower bodies in their swings at all. It's like 90% arms, which is maybe helpful for contact purposes but you're never going to drive the ball like that. Power is generated almost exclusively in the lower body.

Sounds like Murph is still trying the slap approach. Ugh.

UA baseball, softball tournaments bring more than $2M into Tuscaloosa economy
This spring, the University of Alabama's softball and baseball teams stepped up to the plate and provided a big boost to Tuscaloosa's economy.
Stan Adams, executive director of sports for Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports, said the three post-season tournaments — two hosted by the UA softball and one by the UA baseball team — brought in about $750,000 each to the local economy.
"We're kind of estimating a total, overall, (of) about $2.25 million of economic impact ... combined from all three events," Adams said.
