Bama’s style of “no look” man coverage is very susceptible to good & elite passers. Even more so given that the current DB talent isn’t top notch.

Since they can’t really stop a good offense, perhaps playing more zone would make offenses run more plays leading to mistakes.

Expecting the current LBs to handle coverage responsibilities is pretty insane.

I agree we are a bend don’t break defense which is fine considering we have the best offense in the country. We just need to come up and tackle may give up some yards but holding people to field goals and only giving up 20 to 30 points is what we will have to accept this year on defense

Honestly if we can just improve on fundamentals like tackling when we have the opportunity to bring someone down and taking better angles, the defense would be vastly improved overnight.

That zone is fine against Stetson Bennett but it isn’t gonna do much against Ohio State or Clemson in a playoff setting.

Just hope by then the young safeties are ready for prime time and Dylan Moses is healthy or resting for next year by then.

Do you think these DBs can hold up in man coverage against those teams?

I thought the CBs played a good game Safeties are still suspect and our LB looked slow. I agree they’re gonna have to play more zone.

Agree!!! Besides covering backs, which I think was much better in the 2nd half, the fundamentals is what has killed us. Jobe and Surtain have been awesome, I thought the safeties played a little better, Dylan started off rough but looked good in the 2nd half. Dline is a mystery, thought Barmore played well but if we can get more out of Dale and a healthy Ray, this defense has a chance to be good. Reminds me of the 99 team, where the defense improved each game during that season.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I specifically remember Twist saying that we played mixed plays of zone and man to man?

We played more of zone coverage in second half.

the problem is simply no pass rush and there was far to many bust in coverage and the crazy thing is its coming from the older guys like Moses smh.

Bama is and has been fully committed to zone defense. We have been running zone this whole time. It’s matchup zone. That’s the Saban defense. It’s never been just straight man-to-man.

The real problem is lack of pressure on the QB. Yes our secondary sucks but we rarely get any pressure especially without having to blitz.

We did a much better job in the second half. Baremore and anderson were in the backfield many times. Bennett is a decent athlete and got away from them but also threw 2 picks in the second half because of pressure.

It’s not even “the secondary.”

Every bust that people have been so up in arms about this year has come from interior players in coverage.

Moses
Harris
Wright
Hellams
Moore
Allen/Anderson (occasionally when asked to cover).

That’s it.

Surtain and Jobe have been lock-down. They have given up less than 10 receptions combined through 4 games. Battle has been good, too. And hasn’t notably busted.

Those interior guys aren’t passing off matchup responsibility correctly and that’s why the same errors keep showing up with crossers/TE seams/RB flats.

Hellams had some busts but also led.the team in tackles last night. He deserves some appreciation for sure. Hes not good in pass coverage but hes excellent in the run game.

They need to commit to man zone with nickel defense DL but dime defense secondary. Jobe and Surtain on islands. Pass off zone middle of the field. That’s the recipe. Dale and Barmore up front.

I think if we had Armour Davis and Williams with the way Moore is playing this would be great.
But as of now Hellams is too flat footed and lacks speed and 9 is more a strong safety than free safety.

Bama is just Saban stubborn as for taking Moses off the field on passing downs,
it may be because they don't have the 2 listed above to play the role Xavier played last yr.

Williams was brought in for a reason and Davis would give us another hands on DB, which would allow jobe to play inside on dime.
Like the changes in what we wanted our front to do as you saw 31 and 4 bring better heat off the corner
with 92 and 58 doing more slicing than stone walling.

If we can just Saban to pull moses like UGA pulled one of there inside LB'ers on all 3 and 5 or more.
But again we don't have a Xavier and maybe Williams/Davis returns gives us that ability to implement more.

I think we have to let the pass rushers go if we want pressure. On first and second downs our lineman are focused on stopping the run and instead of rushing.
