Back when Rashad Johnson was a senior, I seem to remember that he called the defense. Any reason why we can't do that again.

When Rashad Johnson was a senior, the defense was called by Rolando McClain. Johnson made the secondary calls.

The Mike LB has called the defense for 100% of Nick Saban's tenure at Bama, and he said as much a few weeks ago in a presser.

EDIT: It's impossible for defensive lineman to hear a safety's voice. The distance between them is too large. Also, the secondary signal caller is far too busy calling the secondary to make the calls for the front.

To add to that, with more teams running HUNH offenses, even if Rashad had called the defenses then, he couldn't now. Speed of the game is too fast for him to even get into position.

Well, if Owens playing the entire game on skates isnt enough to get another center in there I dont know what will. Owens got abused... embarrassingly abused. That film session had to be awkward.

How can a guy be as large as Owens and get pushed around like a child. All that 4th qtr talk and Owens is what they produce?

Ricky Van Shelton...could it be somebody lied

The only explanation for it I can think of is that only a couple of guys have the blocking assignments down, and Owens is a better snapper than Dickerson, so the logic is that Owens at center gives us one guy getting blown the frick up instead of two guys blocking air.

IF a high ankle sprain, this is the out after Tenn and back by LSU
This would be great news if the Dline has a similar recovery as Oline... Cam Robinson did this as did another Oline guy a few years earlier; out during Tenn, back by LSU.
Tua did it last year, different games, pretty much same results... only Jalen couldnt recover that quickly

Yeah. I didn't know for sure. I was asking not telling.

Apparently, he called coverages for the secondary.

If it was a sprain, they'd say it. Just my 2 cents.

Boz and others have heard 'significant time' to recover. This is not a sprain. Also, Saban has said it's a foot injury multiple times.

It's not an ankle sprain.

Adding to that, we frequently audible when the QB audibles. Therefore, our Audibler must be physically close to the QB.

Owens playing the entire game on skates

This is another example of fan hyperbole. Owens wasn't "on skates the entire game." He certainly had some missed assignments, but he also made a lot of plays and executed well at times.

But fans don't notice when he does something right - only the mistakes. And our coaching staff, who's intimately aware of the good and bad, has decided that he's worth working with and improving along with the others, as our best line may just include Owens. It also may not, but he's in that 7-8 man rotation because of what he does right - which apparently goes right past your eyes on TV.

Reality is rarely 100 or 0. It's frequently somewhere in between.

Since 2008, BamaOnLine.com's Instant Analysis has been a staple of Crimson Tide football coverage. That won't change in 2019, as we'll continue to provide Alabama fans with insight and interaction fresh from Tuscaloosa.

As for items we touched on during the latest edition of IA, they included:

* Injuries and their lingering effect.

* Why defending Alabama's RPO slant pass isn't as easy as it sounds.

* Is Josh Jobe on the verge of rejoining the mix in the secondary?

* Tons of interaction in Q&A segment!

This is another example of some people today feeling the need to suck every ounce of fun out of every aspect of life, even the casual sports forum so thanks for that, Buzz Killington.

Hyperbole/exaggeration is used on every page of this site in an attempt at humor. I've had many-a-laughs thanks to this, and I hope it continues. I'm a first responder so coming to this site for some needed levity some days is a real shot in the arm so,... to quote Kendrick Lamar, "bitch dont kill my vibe."

Thank goodness this is common sense so we can all extract the appropriate amount of humor/information from each hyperbolic post, but thanks for the tip professor.

Owens wasn't "on skates the entire game." He certainly had some missed assignments

Missing assignments, and getting physically dominated are two different things. Getting put on your heels/losing leverage, and shoved into the backfield several times in one game is a concern. This team is one sack/injury to the QB away from all playoff chances going up in flames.

quote:

but he also made a lot of plays and executed well at times. But fans don't notice when he does something right - only the mistakes.

So if the starting QB makes a lot of plays, and executes well most the time would it be ok if he threw a few interceptions ?

How about Savion Smith in the title game last year - He covered most the time. He executed well most the time. It was those couple blown assignments/poor technique moments that sunk the battleship, eh ?

quote:

Describes most players on the team. I hear Dalcourt will be the center before years end.

OL is in worse shape than many fear if this is true.

LINK ]Alabama practice report: Terrell Lewis watches from side By Mike Rodak | mrodak@al.com
quote:

Alabama held its second and final practice of the week open to reporters leading into Saturday’s game against Southern Miss. Here are some observations:

-- The Tide were back inside their practice bubble Wednesday after holding Tuesday’s session in sweltering afternoon heat. Temperatures on Wednesday again neared 100 degrees.

-- Starting outside linebacker Terrell Lewis, who was not spotted at Tuesday’s practice, was dressed for Wednesday’s practice but only appeared to watch positional drills from the side. His level of participation beyond the media viewing period was unclear.

-- Alabama spent its walkthrough period open to reporters in its dime packages, with senior Jared Mayden and freshman Jordan Battle at safety. Patrick Surtain, Shyheim Carter, Trevon Diggs, Xavier McKinney and Anfernee Jennings were at the line of scrimmage. Shane Lee also joined that group at times.

-- NFL scouts were present, including one from the Carolina Panthers.

LINK ]Live updates: Nick Saban meets with media Wednesday By Mike Rodak | mrodak@al.com
quote:

Alabama coach Nick Saban is holding his final news conference of the week Wednesday in advance of Saturday’s game against Southern Miss.

Here is what Saban said:

-- The emphasis this week has been playing to “a standard” for 60 minutes and that players respect their opponent. “I think humility is something that is very, very important,” Saban said. A lack of humility, Saban said, creates a “blatant disregard for doing things the right way.”

-- Saban noted the 11 a.m. kickoff Saturday but said players will need to be ready despite “the circumstances.” The school has been vocal about daytime kickoffs in early-season heat.

-- Saban called the shooting death this week of a Tuscaloosa police offer a “terrible tragedy” and offered the program’s thoughts and prayers to the community.

-- LaBryan Ray is “probably going to be out for at least six weeks” and then his return will depend on how he responds to treatment and therapy after foot/ankle surgery. “I know it will be six weeks before he starts doing things,” Saban said.

-- Saban reiterated that he doesn’t think experience can be taught to freshman playing big roles on defense but the coaching staff is attempting to create habits about what standard they want from players.

-- Saban said there was concern before the South Carolina game about kickoff coverage but he thought they did a great job of “covering with effort” in Columbia.

-- There is just as much that goes into special teams than the other two phases. Saban said special teams works best with core players in that phase.

-- Antonio Alfano “basically quit” on the team last week, including going to class and he didn’t respond to any help the university offered. Saban said he didn’t know much about what his father announced on Twitter last Friday about the transfer portal.

-- Saban said Alabama missed “far too many tackles” the past two games. Saban said the problem isn’t about the way practice is held in the modern day but how players treat practice. Saban noted the “game has changed” and players play more in space. “We don’t see any wad ball anymore,” he said. “It’s spread.”

-- Justin Eboigbe, who is expected to start in place of LaBryan Ray, was set back by a foot injury earlier this year and he needs to continue to get reps. Saban said he has shown maturity and has seemed to perform better in games than in practice, “which is the sign of a really good competitor.”

Alabama by the numbers

495 — Alabama’s 495 passing yards against South Carolina last week set the school’s single-game record. The Crimson Tide’s previous best came in the 1969 Iron Bowl when it passed for 484 yards against Auburn. Tua Tagovailoa threw for a career-high 444 yards last week, while backup Mac Jones chipped in 51 yards through the air. Together, the duo completed 33 of 39 passes for 495 yards and five touchdowns.

125 — The good news is Alabama’s punting numbers have been better than last year. The bad news is it hasn’t been by much. The Crimson Tide currently ranks No. 125 out of 130 Division I schools, averaging 36.57 yards per punt. Last year, Alabama finished No. 128 in the nation, averaging 35.76 yards per boot.

21 — Najee Harris did something last week that hasn’t been done by an Alabama back in nearly 21 years. The junior’s 87 receiving yards against South Carolina are the most by a Crimson Tide back since Shaun Alexander recorded 110 receiving yards against Mississippi State on Nov. 14, 1998.

9 — Alabama has gone nine straight games without a 100-yard rusher. Damien Harris was the last Crimson Tide player to eclipse the century mark on the ground when he ran for 107 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries during last year’s 29-0 victory over LSU.

4 — Alabama currently features four receivers with 1,000 or more career receiving yards. Jerry Jeudy leads the bunch with 1,887 yards through the air and is followed by Henry Ruggs III (1,172), DeVonta Smith (1,090) and Jaylen Waddle (1,002).

Southern Miss by the numbers
463 yards — Southern Miss quarterback Jack Abraham completed 28 of 36 passes for 463 yards and two touchdowns last week against Troy. The passing total was the second most in school history behind Nick Mullens who threw for 591 yards against Rice in 2016.

209 — Southern Miss receiver Quez Watkins also had a big day against Troy, pulling in seven receptions for 209 yards and two touchdowns. The 209 yards through the air were a career-best for the Athens, Ala. native and marked the fifth-highest single-game total in school history.

47.40 — The Golden Eagles feature the nation’s top kick returner in Jaylond Adams, who is averaging 47.4 yards per return with two touchdowns through three games. Adams is also a deadly punt returner and ranks No. 2 in the nation, averaging 25 yards per return with a score.

6 — Southern Miss has lost its previous six meetings against Alabama. The Golden Eagles’ last victory over the Crimson Tide came in 2000 when it shut out Alabama 21-0 inside Legion Field in Birmingham. In total the two schools have played each other 43 times with Alabama holding a 36-5-2 advantage in the series.

5 — The Golden Eagles will play just five home games for the first time since 2013 this fall and only the third time since 2005. This week’s game will end a three-game road swing for Southern Miss as it has already traveled to Mississippi State and Troy.

Just checking thru the PFF grades...
Owens was worse of the starting 5 (all played for 58 snaps
Owens just above 50% grade but surprising, Leatherwood was just about 3-4 % better. Others were at least 10 percentage points better than Leatherwood.

Just posted for your enjoyment and maybe discussion fodder...
Oh and Neal was #2 this week just ahead of Dickerson and Wills was best at about 75
