I’m stoked to see what Earle can do

Either Will Anderson is the best pass rusher I have ever seen or the offensive line needs help big time... Somewhere in the middle?

Schwing!!

Defense going to have to carry us early and I think it can

I think we'll be really strong in all three phases -- defense, offense and special teams.

Any buzz on O’Brian and how his offense will be and anyone hearing anything about it?
Posted on 8/21/21 at 8:16 pm to Sebastian
There's been a lot posted in here about that throughout fall camp. O'Brien, Saban, Bryce Young and other players have all said positive things about the progress of the offense. Btw, it's not O'Brien's offense. Although he can add some new wrinkles, it's Alabama's offensive system, playbook, terminology, etc.

Agreed. This team is talented in all three phases. I actually think that the kicking game could be stronger if the Aussie punter is as advertised. The offense will go as the line goes. They need cohesion.

What is the staple of BOB’s offense? Anyone have any insight we may see?

If there was a problem with the o line Saban would not hesitate to call them out. He certainly wouldn't make it seem like a player I'd doing better than he actually is.

Eye-witness scrimmage report (2 posts):
quote:
Hello everyone. Every year I try to give some general thoughts about what I saw at the scrimmage while not providing any details that would be considered "too much". I'm not a coach and these are not predictions for the season. Just general things I saw today. And, the BOL staff has mentioned many of these things in their review already. I'm certainly not trying to step on their toes as they do a great job. As usual, the BOL staff will delete if I cross that line, but I probably don't have enough in-depth football knowledge to cross it if I wanted to.
Weather: mix of sun and overcast skies. Warm and very humid. Rained before the scrimmage started so the field was wet. Rained again near the very end of the scrimmage and this may have led to it being cut a little short (not much if any, but there were no sprints at the end like normal indicating something ended earlier than normal).
Young started with the first offense vs the second defense for the first 2 possessions. Led a nice TD drive on the first possession capped off by maybe his best throw of the day: short TD while rolling to his right and throwing back across his body after being flushed from the pocket. It was a nice play by BY and reminded me of the pass he threw last year against Missouri (I think) for a TD. Interesting note was JM started at RB. BY's second series was with the first offense again against the second defense. This ended in an 80-yeard TD pass to Metchie. It was an ugly looking pass, but was on the money. So, things looked pretty sharp to start for first offense against the second defense.
Third and fourth possessions for BY were with the first offense vs the second defense as well, but these didn't go so smoothly. Result both times were punts. In both cases, BY made open receivers try to make difficult catches. The ball was a little behind this receiver, or high to that receiver. Rarely on these drives were receivers hit in stride, if at all. In one case, a quick wr screen required the wr to climb the ladder to catch the ball and by then there was no place to run. RBs rotated for the 1st offense as did the receivers. And, there was lots of work on the ground game. This wasn't an all-out passing game drill like we have seen in some past scrimmages.
Tyson started with the second offense against the first defense. First possession was a punt, But, his second possession was with the first offense against the second defense. He led a good drive that ended with a 40-50 yard TD pass to Williams (I think). Paul made a few really nice throws and showed a really strong arm in one case where he hit a receiver along the sidelines for a ~ 15 yard first down while backpedaling to avoid the rush. Other Tyson-led possessions with the second offense vs. the first defense resulted in punts. There were a few touch sacks here and there, but in general, the D-line did not live in the backfield all day against either QB. But, it should be noted that the defenses seemed to be really testing the offenses regarding blitz pick up. There were lots of blitzes from lots of angles. Roydell and HT met in the hole on one blitz and Roydell kept him off the QB long enough to get the ball out. So, it was nice to see the young rb developing in pass protection.
Eventually, we got to see first offense vs. first defense. BY was the qb (obviously). There were some short completions, a missed open receiver or 2, a pre-snap penalty, a 30ish yd completion all mixed together. The possession ended without a score, but it was scripted as they looked to be working on some things and wanted to change personnel groups. It was interesting to see Storey in at safety for the first defense in this situation.
Tyson led 2s vs 2s in this segment of the scrimmage, but nothing notable came from it.
In redzone 1s vs 1s, BY led a TD on the first possession. The big play was a pass to JM who had a head of steam up from the 20 when he met Branch at about the 5 in the biggest hit of the day. JM's helmet flew off, but Branch got the worst of it. He got up, but went back down woozy. Looked to be a bell ringing and not an arm or shoulder injury to me. But, that is purely based upon his body posture after getting up initially. I didn't see Tyson lead a redzone possession.
More work was done on goal line and coming off the goal line. The personnel groupings seemed to become more mixed as the scrimmage wore on.
In 2-minute, BY led the first offense to a FG vs the first defense. Again, the drive was a mixed bag. Sanders had a good run of ~ 15 yards (he had a good day -- it was good to see him look pretty healthy). There were some completions, but some were more difficult than they should have been. There was a missed slant open over the middle. in one case, the receiver went in and BY threw it out. I have no idea whose fault that was. The first defense got some pressure, but it was manageable for the most part. On the second possession in this segment, BY threw his lone pick on a deep sideline pattern. I thought it was Jobe with the pick. But, I think the BOL staff had it for someone else. I will defer to them on that.
For Tyson in 2-minute, it was 2s vs 2s. He floated a pass to the flat that was almost picked. Roydell had a good run, and then Turner got an int that he returned to the 4 where Tyson shoved him out.

General thoughts:
DL Latham made a few good plays. I saw DL Burroughs come off injured and then left the field for the locker room holding his left arm/shoulder. He was visibly upset (slammed his helmet to the ground on the sideline), so I hope its nothing serious. But, I didn't see him return.
JM and RW got more work that BR at rb it seemed. They all ran hard when given the chance including TS as mentioned above. JM looked like a physical handful for tacklers. Roydell is smooth. Should have lots of depth there. Didn't notice Wheaton if he played. Not sure if he's on campus yet. :)
Punting is still very inconsistent. Perine and the Aussie punter would boom one and then follow that up with a shank. Coach Saban seemed frustrated with the inconsistency.
Milroe played some with the 2s. Looks athletic and threw a few nice balls, but in my opinion he is not on the BY/PT level yet, understandably. He does present problems scrambling, but that's not really what you want to design your offense around. We all know BY is the guy, but at times today there wasn't as much separation between BY and PT as I expected there to be. The fans will need to be patient with BY as he matures. He is not what we saw Mac do last year. Ball placement and scanning the field with quick decisions just isn't there yet. That's why we have coaches to develop these skills. Maybe Smith, Najee, etc. helped Mac in that area last year. But, in my eyes, Mac usually put the ball where those guys needed it to be to stay in stride. Today, that was missing.
I will be really surprised if this defense isn't significantly better than last year. Even though Allen didn't play, we look loaded. HT played with the 1s, but he isn't Reuben Foster. I'm interested to see how he is in a game. He was beat once in coverage for a first down throw by Tyson. It was a good play by the offense. He had some good run stops. I can't comment on how well he called the defensive signals. He just didn't explode off the page like Foster. So, for those expecting that type of impact, keeping expectations in proportion would be wise here. Harris didn't flash today either. So, maybe it was just that type of a scrimmage. Anderson did cause some havoc a few times in the backfield. On one touch sack, he beat Evan Neal. So, that's good vs. good right there.
As the players got tired, things got a little sloppy. On one possession, Neal and Owens were each called for holding on back to back plays against the second defense. There were a few PI calls as well.
I think the OL will look better when Ekior gets back. I didn't see Dalcort play at all. However, like I said earlier, the defense didn't "ruin" the game. for the most part QBs had time. Blitzes contributed to some of the pressure.
I noticed Arnold playing CB instead of safety. Had 2 nice pass breakups with 3s and 4s.
Latu had a nice catch. There may have been another TE catch or two, but overall the TEs were not a major emphasis in the passing game. 19 played with the second offense all day.

What happened to the punter from Troy?
Posted on 8/21/21 at 9:25 pm to TidalSurge1
Trust me at this point got to be zero chance Perine is the punter. It's not even close after today.
Will Anderson and Dallas Turner are men can't be blocked

I was wondering why Dallas Turner's name hadn't been mentioned. I guess the reason is there are several people ahead of him. It will be really interesting to see how the outside linebacker rotation looks.

I hate to hear about Burroughs getting dinged up today. Trey Sanders showing flashes is welcoming though after his unfortunate luck the past couple of seasons

We should be able to lean on the run game. I dont think BY will have to win many games to start the season. We might see a more old school Saban team with great defense and an efficient offense that can dominate time of possession.

My nephew started at Bama last week so we used the scrimmage as an opportunity to see him. I used to always be at them but life and everything.
Most of what the gent above said is accurate from my vantage. I’ll add a few things:
The scrimmage is heavy scripting, you can tell. Every play, every action is closely called and monitored. The players obviously know just about everything happening or have seen it called 1000 times to this point. I say this because some of the action just isn’t natural.
BY looks good to me. He did miss a few passes but he commands the offense. Something overlooked completely is how quick he is, his reactions, agility, and release are pretty impressive honestly. I turned several times to comment on that. Lot of smiles came from the cannon. I think you will see him run at times and have success.
The defense to this point of not playing a live game looks just dominate and athletic. It’s hard for me to place a year on it but damn 2016 comes to mind. This group is a unit and they are flying everywhere. I’m excited about their potential.
OL was solid but not quite the Gel I was expecting. I think the return of everyone will fix most of that.
As far as WR take your pick we have a bunch of them that can easily play and produce.
Will Riechard looked good FYI.
Aside from that is anyone has any questions I’ll try to read notes and answer them.
