TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama held its 15th practice of the fall Monday evening as players donned shorts and shells under 81-degree temperatures. Here are some notes from the abbreviated media viewing session.

Anfernee Jennings was limited during the workout. The redshirt senior donned a crimson jersey but wore sneakers and stood to the side while the rest of the outside linebacking unit took part in drills.

— After earning a start with the first-team defense during Saturday’s scrimmage, freshman linebacker Christian Harris appeared to be limited during the period. He spent the beginning of the period with head trainer Jeff Allen before the medical staff tended to his left knee.

Alabama practice report: A few observations from an evening workout
quote:

After getting Sunday off, the Alabama football team was back on the field for an evening practice in Tuscaloosa. It was a comfortable 81 degrees when they took the field.

A few observations from a shorter-than-normal media viewing period:

-- DJ Dale was working with the defensive line in a crimson full-contact jersey. He was held out of the scrimmage as a precautionary measure as he recovers from a minor injury.

-- Fellow defensive lineman Stephon Wynn, out for a few weeks, was spotted in a black non-contact jersey wearing a walking boot.

-- It looked like outside linebackers Anfernee Jennings and Terrell Lewis were getting a few drills off to the side. Lewis was limited in the scrimmage, Nick Saban said, as a precaution.

-- The quarterbacks looked good.

-- Running back Jerome Ford was not spotted as expected after spraining his ankle in the scrimmage. Freshman Keilan Robinson was third in line behind Najee Harris and Brian Robinson.

-- Players were in helmets and shoulder pads instead of full gear like Saban said after the scrimmage. This would be more like a typical Monday walk-through after a game than a full practice, Saban said.

-- Practice resumes Tuesday as they transition out of camp mode with classes starting this week.

BOL:

-- After starting in Saturday’s scrimmage, inside linebacker Christian Harris appeared to tweak his left knee during the one viewing period. After Harris tested things out, trainers inspected and wrapped his knee. He looked to be trying to rejoin the line when we were walking off the field.

-- With Harris out for most of the media viewing periods, the inside linebacker line was led by junior Dylan Moses with Shane Lee, Jaylen Moody, Ale Kaho and Markail Benton behind him.

Doesn't seem to be too bad, they allowed him to stay around and just wrapped it and he was walking....now when they get in and take a closer look, who the heck knows what it will turn out to be... but, I tend to be a glass half full when it comes to this crap

Trevon Diggs, Alabama secondary battling for respect By Edwin Stanton - August 19, 2019
quote:

Stats are deceiving sometimes.

It’s a difficult task to compare two sets of numbers and formulate some type of deep analysis.

In the case of Alabama’s pass defense last season, the numbers are pretty clear.

The first 12 games of the 2018 season were not too bad with Alabama allowing 165 yards per game with 12 total touchdowns and 9.3 yards per completion.

The last three games saw Alabama give up an average of 318 yards for 15 yards per completion with eight touchdowns allowed.

The national title game with Clemson clearly stood out with Alabama giving up 347 passing yards, three touchdowns and two plays over 60 yards (62, 74).

You don’t have to remind senior defensive back Trevon Diggs.

“It happened. You learn from your mistakes,” Diggs said on Monday.

Diggs and the rest of the Crimson Tide secondary have put the bad finish in the past and there is no reason to review the film.

We know what happened in that game,” he said. “The only thing you can do is fix it and get better from it. I feel like we are doing that.”

Diggs is one of three seniors (Shyheim Carter, Jared Mayden) leading the Crimson Tide in the backfield this season, along with junior Xavier McKinney. After such a big drop-off over the last three games, Diggs and Company just want to prove they have what it takes to be an elite secondary unit.

“I feel like we are going out there to just earn our respect,” Diggs said. “That is as simple as I can put it. We just have to show everybody that we can play.”

There are several younger players Alabama is counting on to provide depth at defensive back, including Nigel Knott, Josh Jobe, Jalyn Armour-Davis and a talented group of freshmen in Daniel Wright, Jordan Battle, Scooby Carter, Brandon Turnage and DeMarcco Hellams.

But one of the biggest returning players is Patrick Surtain Jr., who played a big role as a freshman last year.

“I’ve seen Pat grow tremendously,” Diggs said. “This year he’s proven that he knows the plays, the calls, the adjustments and he knows how to re-route (receivers). I’ve seen a big improvement.”

Surtain Jr. stepped up as a freshman and contributed with 37 tackles and seven pass break-ups.

“It takes a lot of heart,” Diggs said of Surtain stepping in as a freshman. “He was able to do some of the things the older guys can do and even better.”

Game-by-game predictions: Alabama 2019
247Sports
Published on Aug 19, 2019
In this episode of Barton Makes Picks, 247Sports' Barton Simmons is running through Alabama 2019 football schedule.

Shows Bama undefeated thru regular season and thru UGA in the SECCG. Then has Bama as #1 in the final 4... Hate that, not sure how that happens (ain't no one beating CU with their weak arse schedule) Beating tOSU in a 1 vs 4 and then beating Dabo in the revenge game coming out ahead 3 out of 5 in the last 5 years.
If the team can avoid the big injury and the Oline can keep Tua on his feet and out of harm's way. If Bama goes into the bracket as #1 and wins, of course, this would be 1st time the #1 would have won the NC....

ESPN's Matt Barrie spoke to the C Spire 1st & 10 Club in Mobile on Monday, Aug. 19, 2019. (Creg Stephenson/cstephenson@al.com)
LINKBy Creg Stephenson | cstephenson@al.com
quote:

Two of the four spots in the 2019 College Football Playoff are effectively spoken for, leaving everyone else to compete for the other two, ESPN’s Matt Barrie said on Monday.

Barrie, who will serve as studio host for the network’s coverage of college football every Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning this season, spoke Monday night to the C Spire 1st & 10 Club at the Mobile Marriott. He identified Alabama and Clemson as “near locks” for the playoff again this season, with the other two spots coming from the SEC’s Georgia and LSU, the Big 12’s Oklahoma and Texas, the Big Ten’s Ohio State and Michigan, plus one popular “darkhorse” contender from the Pac-12.

“When I talk dark horses, I try to stay out of the Top 10,” Barrie said. “When you talk about the Top 10, everybody’s a playoff team. LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, some of those teams can fight their way in. But if I go down to (No.) 14, Utah has a schedule that fits them, that has the skill coming back to go undefeated in the Pac-12, that’s what you have to find. You start in the teens and find that team that has everything go their way and has the schedule go their way. If you’re looking for that of criteria, Utah is who I would look at.”

Speaking of the Pac-12, one of that league’s best teams opens the season against No. 16 Auburn on Aug. 31 in Arlington, Texas. No. 11 Oregon is widely regarded as the preseason Pac-12 favorite, but isn’t likely to beat the Tigers, Barrie said.

The Oregon game is considered a key one for Auburn’s Gus Malzahn, who will turn his offense over to either redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood or true freshman Bo Nix. Barrie said the national perception of the job Malzahn is doing is probably more generous than how he’s viewed in this state.

“I do like Auburn against Oregon,” Barrie said. “Oregon has a good offensive line, but they haven’t seen a (defensive) front like Auburn’s. Whether it’s Gatewood or Nix, they’re extremely talented players or they wouldn’t be at Auburn. … As a freshman quarterback, I think it’s imperative you find the guy that can make the offense work. You don’t have to win games, you just can’t lose games.

“Auburn has talent — they’ve got speed, they’re always good up-front. I say this all the time with coaches — are you competitive? Are you recruiting? Are you close? And it’s not like Auburn hasn’t been competitive, they’ve just been judged by the other side of the state. That’s not fair to anyone. For Auburn this year, people are looking at eight wins. I can see Auburn easily going 9-3, 10-2, pulling off an upset and watching those quarterbacks grow in front of your eyes. Because Auburn certainly has the talent in other places.”

“Close” describes Georgia in its games the last two seasons with Alabama. The Bulldogs led the Crimson Tide in the second half of both the 2017 national title game and the 2018 SEC championship game, only to see Alabama rally behind a back-up quarterback — Tua Tagovailoa the first year, Jalen Hurts the second.

However, whatever gap their might have been between the two programs prior to 2017 no longer exists, Barrie said.

“They’re there,” Barrie said. “There’s no close — they’re there. If you look at two years ago, they should have won the national championship, and then the Tua thing happened. They were every bit as good in the SEC championship (in 2018) and probably should have won that one, and then Jalen Hurts happened. They just need to finish games. Talent-wise, it’s there. Jake Fromm’s an NFL quarterback. D’Andre Swift is going to be a Heisman candidate. They have the skill to compete, now it’s just about finishing.”

Alabama is ranked No. 2 nationally behind only Clemson, and has either won or played for the national title in each of the last four seasons. The Crimson Tide is the only team has made the College Football Playoff all five seasons the current postseason format has existed.

When asked about a potential “Achilles heel” for Alabama, Barrie went with the obvious and identified its banged-up linebacker corps. He added that he wants to see a better performance from the Crimson Tide’s offensive line as well.

“Last year it was the secondary, but I don’t think that’s going to be an issue this year,” Barrie said. “Probably the linebackers. If you look at their linebackers, they tend to send a lot of guys to the NFL, and Saban always reloads. Is there ever going to be a year where reloading hits a bit of a snag? It’s not going to be offensively, maybe offensive line early on trying to protect Tua. In the big games last year, he got hit a lot. Early on, watch them, because it could be something that manifests itself later in the year against teams like Clemson or Georgia.”

Tagovailoa is still under center for Alabama, though Hurts has moved to Oklahoma. Sooners coach Lincoln Riley on Monday named Hurts his starting quarterback for the season-opener against Florida Atlantic.

Oklahoma has had the last two Heisman Trophy winners in quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, both of whom where the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft the following year. Barrie said he expects Hurts to get the job done in Norman as well.

“I think the thing with Jalen is, he didn’t have to be an arm guy at Alabama,” Barrie said. “I know there was talk that in Kiffin’s offense, he’d miss wide-open receivers. He really wouldn’t get in the flow of the game because he knew he had his legs. At Oklahoma, he’s going to be forced to throw first, run second. … You’ll see out of him, what I think will surprise a lot of people, the kid can sling it. If Lincoln Riley can turn him into the next great Big 12 quarterback, he’s probably the best offensive mind in college football. I wouldn’t expect Heisman Trophy, No. 1 overall pick out of Jalen, but I’m expecting an Oklahoma-level offensive team.”

With all the glowing praise of Josh Jobe added to Diggs/Surtain/Carter/McKinney I am really starting to get excited about watching a confident, fast, aggressive secondary again this season.

This team could be really, really frickin good.

Yea and Thompson didn't play all that great down the stretch. Doesn't feel like the team lost much and you get to re-insert Diggs into the lineup

Predicting Alabama's depth chart as fall camp comes to a close (BamaOnLine | segment)

quote:

OUTSIDE LINEBACKER

JACK: Anfernee Jennings, Chris Allen

SAM: Terrell Lewis, King Mwikuta

Reserves: Ben Davis, Jarez Parks, Kevin Harris

Reasoning: Jennings and Lewis are the clear starters at outside linebacker. When 100-percent healthy, they are nightmares for opposing quarterbacks. Allen should be the first player off the bench at the position, too. As for the No. 4 option, Davis worked with the second group early in the preseason, and Harris showed flashes since the spring, but Mwikuta is the player that seems to be getting the most attention from the coaching staff ahead of the start of the regular season.

Laura Chramer Alabama offensive lineman Jedrick Wills Jr. (74) and others prepare to drill during Fan Day practice on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
quote:

The good news about Alabama’s offensive line Posted Aug 20, 8:46 AM Alabama Football Fan Day, Aug. 3, 2019 By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com

The August hype surrounding Alabama’s offense is hard to miss. Return a Heisman runner up quarterback, four NFL-caliber receivers and a former No. 1 running back recruit if you want to create a stir.

Below the surface, the foundation of this group justifies the buzz.

Unlike the 2010 Crimson Tide offense that returned Greg McElroy, Mark Ingram and Julio Jones, this 2019 unit has a proven offensive line and depth that’s already being tested with seemingly minor preseason injuries.

Among the seven who have been shuffled through the first team at various times this August, four were top-34 overall prospects in their respective recruiting classes.

“I like the offensive line. I think we’ve got some pretty good experience there,” Nick Saban said. “I like the two tackles that we have. I think they’ve both had really good camps. We have four or five guys that can play inside that have done really well. Without naming specific players, I think we can have a really good offensive line.”

The tackles -- Alex Leatherwood (No. 4 overall in 2017) and Jedrick Wills (No. 34 in 2017) -- anchor the group. Inside, Florida State grad transfer Landon Dickerson, senior Matt Womack, junior Chris Owens, Sophomore Emil Ekiyor Jr., and freshman Evan Neal have been spotted with the first group.

Behind them, only one reserve was less than a four-star recruit coming out of high school.
O-linemen in rotation Star-rating Overall recruit ranking
Alex Leatherwood 5 No. 4 (2017)
Jedrick Wills 4 No. 34 (2017)
Evan Neal 5 No. 7 (2019)
Landon Dickerson 4 No. 31 (2016)
Chris Owens 4 No. 192 (2016)
Emil Ekiyor Jr. 4 No. 113 (2018)
Matt Womack 3 No. 693 (2015)
(247Sports composite ranking)

It also helps when injuries and other experiments have claimed time for interior linemen like Owens, Womack and Ekiyor at points in camp.

“We’ve had players sort of nicked up, missing a practice here, missing a practice there,” Saban said. “Like to get them all out there so we can try to put our best group together and try to get our best five out there, which I don’t know that we’ve ever had the chance to do to this point. But I feel better about the number of players that we have at that position now than I’ve had most of the time in the past, so I feel pretty good about it.”

Dickerson has been spotted at center and guard at times in the last few weeks. And Neal, the No. 7 overall recruit in the 2019 class, has been used with the first team at guard recently.

“The plus side is everyone knows their playbook,” Wills said. “So, it’s been easy with communication and things like that. I feel it’s more, kind of like, I guess you don’t have the same bond as everybody else. But whomever they hop in there it goes smooth and easy. It’s all been pretty good.”

That connection between neighbors on the line can be crucial.

“I guess from anywhere on the line,” Wills said, “you have to trust the guy on the left of you, to the right of you, so it’s kind of like a trust thing, knowing actually who’s in there for you kind of in certain situations.

With Neal, the top-ranked 2019 tackle in 247Sports’ composite, Wills said the 6-7, 360-pounder played “real smooth and real easy” at guard.

“I haven’t really seen anything that really stood out about him being in a new position,” Wills said, “so that’s a good thing.”

Swapping offensive line coaches in the offseason also brought a few new ideas to the room. Out was Brent Key to Georgia Tech, replaced with former Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood who spent the last few years with the Atlanta Falcons.

Flood worked with new Tide offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian in Atlanta.

“They’re like a crazy duo,” Wills said. “They spread like a whole bunch of knowledge throughout the whole offensive line room, and the offense in general. I feel that it definitely helps when it comes down to making decisions, calling plays and coming up with different schemes and game plans. It’s crazy. It helps.”

Less than two weeks remain before the Aug. 31 opener with Duke in Atlanta. Camp unofficially ended after last Saturday’s scrimmage as classes begin this week in Tuscaloosa.

Hype will remain for this offense loaded with skill position players but it’s the line up front that will put them in position for the big-play reputation born last fall.
