Pretty good assessment but I don’t know if I agree with:

quote:

A note on #47. He is not a super explosive player, but gets good push, has good hands, discipline in technique and pushed the pocket well.

I’ve seen Young quite a few times this year fire off the ball and blow up some runs plays. I understand he was talking about pass rush, but we really haven’t seen anyone put up consistent pressure. QBs we’ve faced just don’t have to hold onto the ball very long because of busted coverages from the middle defenders. If we can shore up the coverage assignments from our safeties and ILBs, I think we should a lot more pressures ending in sacks. 47 imo is one of the better guys on the DL at collapsing the pocket and driving his guy back towards the QB.

Heisman is the guy who had the best last 2 weeks of the season. As much as they want to say it is a complete season award, it’s not.

They're working on fixing coverage assigments and mistakes. The halftime adjustments made vs UGA showed we're making some progress -- the defense settled down and played better. Still more work to do, but as long as I see ongoing improvements where needed, I can be patient.

Agreed; I think that’s all we’ve asked for. The problem was, up until the 3rd and 4th Quarters of the UGA game, we saw zero improvement and some might say we even got worse on defense.

In my very worthless opinion, we should incorporate a lot more zone defense and let the DL just do their thing this year. And then next year we need to pick up a proven DC with great communication skills that can teach these guys how to play man, read pew-snap motion, shift, etc. We also need an ILB coach that can teach these guys how to properly play the position - I wonder what Reuben Foster is up to these days and if he needs a job lol.

Me too. Not being a Debbie downer bc I am extremely happy to get the W, but from a coaching perspective , if you go back and watch it closely , UGA had guys open most of the night. We got lucky with batted balls but that many usually doesn’t happen . Our offense is good enough to carry us most of the time but like you said, we have got to clean some things up in the middle of the field

Saban prides himself on being a defensive back coach, so I think we have to include him, when we talk about defensive back play. I'm not blaming Saban, but I think it's wrong to criticize everyone but him. I hope our defensive play will get better as the season play out. Hopefully the defensive breakdowns or due to the limited contact and spring practices during the Covid -19 issues.

Surtain was our only returning starter in the secondary, and there wasn't much veteran starting experience throughout our defensive roster. So, I expected some growing pains. I'm encouraged by the 2nd half performance improvement Sat night and feeling cautiously optimistic we'll see improvement continue.

I actually don’t think the DBs have played horribly, and more importantly, they seem to be improving.

On a side note, is everyone supposed to be jumping all over Coach O for playing Miles Brennan while he was hurt?

I distinctly recall Saban getting shite for playing Tua while he was hurt.

To be fair, how many times we've seen good defense that got to QBs and they had open men? not this year or last year but before that?

I am just saying that the UGA QB gave us a few breaks by not seeing/ being able to see the field or open receivers . Definitely improvement over the OM game but we haven’t put it all together yet IMO. I know some on here think the DL played great but we still have a long way to go on our pass rush.... fixing that would help the middle of the defense which has struggled in coverage

I wished our zone defense looked like Arky’s. They make QBs throw in small windows and break on everything... looks like they have 13 men out there

There's definitely room for improvement. But it's good to note the improvement needed coming off a win. Hopefully the unit plays better this week at Tennessee.

Isn't his specialty cornerbacks not safeties? If that's the case the cb's have been great. Surtain and Jobe have been lockdown for the most part.

Would like to see Najee load shared a little more.I know 4 is ready.
But would also like to see a 3rd back.I know 22 is built for the load. But this SEC only opponent does not give him that rest SMALL school opponent game. Also I know it sounds crazy but we need another TE to step up as Miller a little nicked up.

Wr wise we should start getting one more some catches in case we lose one on a test or nicked up.
Waddle looks like his cafe or lower cramps in legs is nagging him.

Defense wise solve the moses, wright, hellems, 94 problems. As ive said Hellems would be better for moses on nickle packages closer to line.
If Williams had not hurt his arm I think he would have been on the field. Allowing either jobe in slot or himself. This would maybe have moore at Cb.I say this because moore looks like he can handle both Cb and inside slot.

I think our backups will probably get some significant playing time this week vs Tenn.

We've gotta either kickoff into the end zone or cover kickoffs a lot better than we did vs UGA.
