Regarding the tackling issues, is any of it due to these kids being taught their whole lives to tackle with their head leading the way until 3 or 4 years ago when targeting became a thing? Now they are having to tackle a whole different way, leading with their shoulder and not their nose.

Does anyone know Roach's reputation as a defensive line coach? I don't mean that in a generic way or a "Saban thinks he's good so he's good" way - I mean has anybody read/heard about it pre-Bama hiring him?

I just don't have any clue.

EDIT : This wasn't a post to say he sucks or he doesn't suck, I was just asking for any legitimate, non-biased information on Roach as a coach. I just haven't heard anything.

LINK ]BOL Daybreak: Wednesday cup of Crimson Tide (Podcast)
quote:

LINK ]

Three times per week, BOL Daybreak is part of the process for Crimson Tide fans looking to get their day off to an informational and entertaining start.

On a Wednesday edition of Daybreak, we'll talk Freddie Roach on the recruiting trail in UA regalia; Bama loses a representative at the Senior Bowl; and the visit Alabama men's basketball is set to make to Vanderbilt tonight.

We'll also check in with 247sports.com national analyst and BOL staff alum Charles Power, who will talk about current quarterback situations both at Alabama -- with an emphasis on Bryce Young -- and around the SEC.

I have only seen a couple of things from outside sources that suggest he is a good DL coach.

Joe Judge thinks highly enough of him that he was looking to bring Roach to NY Giants with him to coach the DL.

“Freddie Roach is a rising star,” said former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze after hiring Roach. “He’s a heck of a recruiter, heck of a technician. Demanding on his kids.”

This was one of the things I saw yesterday that made me feel pretty good about his coaching chops.

The flip side to that is who the heck is Joe Judge? I live in the Northeast and a lot people are befuddled he would be given a head coaching job.

I like Freddie and believe he will do well but Joe Judge wanting him doesn't do anything for me.

Yeah, I only know Joe Judge as that random nobody the Giants just hired (he was NE's water boy, if I'm not mistaken).

I like Freddie and very sincerely hope he's the best DL coach the universe has ever seen, but this is a take it on faith-type hire - not much you can point to that would indicate what we should be expecting of his coaching chops (good or bad).

Joe Judge is one of the more talented position coaches in the NFL. Belichick speaks very highly of him. For the Giants to hire him after their vetting process even though he’s never been a head coach or coordinator tells you how much they liked his resume and potential .

Don't buy it. Dave Gettleman has been a pretty bad GM so far for them. The last two NYG coaching hires got them Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmer. There are plenty of Patriot assistant coaches that Belichick speaks highly of that were mediocre to bad head coaches. The fact that they would hire Judge without interviewing Josh McDaniels is a red flag about thier vetting process.

Not to mention that even if Gettleman was a talent-spotting savant (you know, rather than almost the opposite) and everyone that had been without 10ft. of Belichick and was later hired somewhere else had turned out to be great, the statement "Joe Judge is one of the more talented position coaches in the NFL" is a very, very strong statement... one that needs more than a track record comprised of one season as a position group coach for a consistently successful position group on the NFL's most consistently successful team to back it up.

For the record: Boz dropped the news on 10 December last year on this board that there was going to be a change at the D-line coaching position and that Brian Baker was possibly out. That was more than a month before it materialized and WAY before anybody else was even thinking about this possibility.

Pretty good work for someone who is accused by certain negativity-dwellers on this board of having zero inside information.

Thanks and keep up the good work, Boz!
