Great day at The Joe! A decent turnout and a rowdy right field. Nice to see hitting and scoring throughout the game. Wholesale substitutions near the end of the game giving the young guys some experience. All in all an excellent start. You can’t win them all if you don’t win the first one!

Baseball Opens 2023 Season with Impressive 12-3 Win over Richmond

The Crimson Tide bats produced double-digit runs for the first time on Opening Day since 2018

Alabama baseball began the 2023 campaign with an impressive 12-3 win over Richmond on Friday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

The Spiders gained a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second before the Tide countered with 11 unanswered runs. Alabama plated two in the home half of the second followed by five in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Richmond tallied solo homers in the seventh and ninth with Alabama adding one more in the bottom of the seventh for the eventual 12-3 final.

All nine starters reached base for the Tide offense with seven of the nine recording at least one hit. Mac Guscette led the way with a 3-for-4 showing that included a double and a homer along with a team-high four RBI and two runs scored. Andrew Pinckney matched Guscette with a pair of runs as part of a perfect 4-for-4 day. Pinckney also doubled while adding one RBI.

Grayson Hitt (1-0) picked up the win with a strong start on Opening Day. The junior tossed 5.0 frames, allowing one unearned run on one hit and three walks with a career-high tying eight strikeouts. Hitt turned the ball over to the trio of Luke Holman, Hunter Furtado and Kade Woods who combined for five strikeouts over the final 4.0 innings.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"This was a really mature game by our group on both sides of the ball. It starts on the mound – I thought Grayson (Hitt) was outstanding. He had a lot of maturity with his body language, his demeanor, his tempo, and he really attacked the hitters and got us off to a great start. Our approach offensively was outstanding against a guy that throws heavy off-speed stuff. We had a lot of production up and down the lineup, a lot of hard contact and hits to all sides of the field."

In other baseball news…

Jacksonville State beat UGA and Arizona beat Tenn in other season opening games yesterday. Kentucky, Vandy and Mizzou also lost their openers.

All SEC West teams and UF & USCe won.

Somebody made a pretty picture

You cant go undefeated if you dont win the first game. Bama not going to lose a game this year. Or at least in the month of Feb.

Pinckney with a solo shot home run in the first and Caden Rose with a 3 run home run in 2nd. Shelton with a sac fly to score Jarvis. Bama up 5-0 in the 2nd. Going to be out of pocket for much of the rest of the game.

Loving the hitting so far.

Hopefully that continues once we start conference play.

I think the goal would be to somehow get to .500 in SEC play this season. And that might be too tall of a task. It’s a brutal climb.

It's a challenge considering the depth of the conference.

Couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. Elated with the pitching and offensive production so far. Hope the guys can keep it going tomorrow. You can’t win them all if you you don’t win the first two.

Offense Stays Hot for Baseball in 13-1 Win over Richmond on Saturday

The Tide totaled 13 runs on 15 hits and seven walks for the series-clinching victory

Alabama baseball secured a series win with a 13-1 victory over Richmond on Saturday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

The Tide offense paired with a solid pitching performance for a second consecutive convincing win over the Spiders. Alabama's bats produced 13 runs on 15 hits, scoring in each of the first five frames, while the arms allowed just one run and combined for 12 strikeouts on the day.

Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit with Caden Rose highlighting the offensive effort. The junior center fielder finished 2-for-3 with a home run, a team-high five RBI and one run scored. He was part of nine total batters who tallied at least one run with Jim Jarvis, Andrew Pinckney, Dominic Tamez and Drew Williamson all tying for the lead at two runs apiece.

Ben Hess (1-0) picked up right where he left off in last year's SEC Tournament to earn the Saturday win. The sophomore matched his career-high for innings with 6.0 scoreless frames, allowing just three hits and striking out six. He handed the ball over to a pair of freshmen in Riley Quick and Alton Davis II with the pair finishing the final 3.0 frames and combining for six punchouts.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"This was a very similar story to yesterday. Ben (Hess) got us off to a great start. He was just outstanding, got ahead in the count and threw all of his pitches for a strike. He gave us a great start and the offense helped by scoring in the first five innings. We kind of threw the first punch and extended the lead. We made a lot of hard contact up and down the lineup and it was just a really good effort by our club. I'm really proud of them, and I hope we can do it again tomorrow."
