Alabama's offense rallied late, but the comeback fell short in an 8-4 loss to Auburn on Friday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Crimson Tide is now 24-11 on the season and 4-9 in Southeastern Conference play.
Auburn used a home run in the second to take an early 2-0 lead and added two more with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh. The Tigers then plated one in the eighth and added three in the ninth for an 8-0 advantage. Alabama was able to load the bases with two down in the seventh and reached a pair with two outs in the eighth but was held off the scoreboard until the ninth. The Crimson Tide rallied for four in the final frame and had the tying run at the plate but a flyout to left ended the ballgame at 8-4.
The win went to Auburn starter Tommy Vail (3-1), who tossed 6.2 scoreless innings. Luke Holman (5-2) was tagged with the loss despite another solid start. The sophomore allowed four runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts across 6.2 innings and a career-high 89 pitches.
From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"Luke Holman gave us a good start, and I really liked the fight we showed late in the game. But we just didn't show enough fight before the ninth and didn't do enough offensively tonight. They tried to help us, gave us eight free baserunners, but we just didn't hit enough balls hard and didn't have enough of the good at-bats that we needed."

Since misery loves company, it appears that the Hitt rumor is true. So we’ll likely have two bullpen games to wrap up the series. Sure - in light of that, burn a 3rd arm tonight after the game is already lost.
Even though I’ve witnessed it with my own eyes and many times in person, I can’t believe where we are as a program. It’s increasingly apparent this season is ready to have a fork stuck in it midway through April. There is talent on the field but whatever strategy is being employed to bring it out on a consistent basis is clearly not working.
Byrne was there tonight and on the field after the game. He was not smiling. We’ll see where it leads.

I thought Bohannon was looking like a good hire. It appears to be going in the wrong direction quickly. Well guess we need to start looking at some other candidates.

Here we go again with the resource excuse. Auburn played in the CWS last year with the same scholarship limits and resources.
I’m saying the university and it’s boosters are invested in making sure we win at football and basketball, I’m not sure it’s reasonable to expect them to chase championships in another men’s sport right now, especially in one that is arguably the hardest to compete in other than football.
LSU, Ole Miss, Miss St, Ark and to a lesser degree AU are all competing for championships in the west alone and SC, Vandy, UF and UT are all doing the same in the east.
Absent an elite coach and likely NIL money Bama is not going to break through that pack anytime soon.
You want to fire Bohannon cool, he probably deserves it. I’m just saying that expecting to pass many of those teams and win consistently the upper half of the SEC is a really tough ask right now.

NIL is simply not that big of a deal in college baseball. There are too many players and baseball does not carry the popularity of football and basketball. Who wants to give major money to a guy whose name recognition is weak because he plays a sport that most media gives only a little attention to during its championship? Which Bryce do you want repping your company - Young or Eblin? Sure, there may be a few hard core supporters at some schools who will pay a baseball player NIL money. But, very few people are going to throw big money away on it.
Players go to schools where they can be developed and win championships. They don't go to schools where history says they will spend a year on the injury list with a UCL tear and be a part of a bottom tier conference team.

Bohannon obviously trying to do something to save his phony-baloney job.

I didn't watch it, but I did keep up with the stats link Fan posted earlier.
Hope we pull out the series tomorrow, but I'm not holding my breath.

GMac comes through in a big way. What a pleasant surprise for him to give Bama 5 plus strong innings. Bullpen was managed effectively too. Excellent crowd tonight - even got a little rowdy at times. The hole we’re in is still deep, but at least it didn’t get any deeper tonight. Roll Tide!
McMillan’s Start Helps Baseball Earn 4-2 Win over Auburn on Saturday
The senior tossed 5.0-plus scoreless innings despite being on a pitch count to earn the win
Alabama baseball evened the series up with Auburn thanks to a 4-2 win over the Tigers on Saturday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Crimson Tide is now 25-11 on the season and 5-9 in Southeastern Conference play.
Alabama jumped out front early with a three-run second. The Tide then added one more in the fourth before the Tigers cut into the lead with one run apiece in the seventh and ninth. Auburn was able to reach the tying run in the top of the ninth, but a 4-6-3 double play ended things in favor of the Crimson Tide to even the series up at one game apiece.
Garrett McMillan (1-1) was masterful in his extended outing. Despite being on a pitch count, McMillan tossed 5.0-plus scoreless frames, allowing just one hit while striking out four for the win. The Tide then went to the bullpen with Alton Davis II highlighting the relief effort. The freshman worked a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and a walk with one strikeout for his second save of the year.
While only recording five hits on the night, Alabama's offense was aided by 11 free passes made up of eight walks and three hit-by-pitch. The bats were led by Mac Guscette and Dominic Tamez. Guscette finished 2-for-3 with a two-run double and one walk, while Tamez was 2-for-4 with a double of his own to go with one run scored.
From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"I'm really proud of our team. This was a big win for us on so many levels. We got to the point where we needed guys to step up, and that's exactly what Garrett McMillan and Alton Davis II did tonight."

I was recently at the Dude as well.
It's as good as it gets for a college baseball atmosphere/venue.
