Bottom L-R: James Nathan Shelton, Hagan Banks, Braylon Myers, Hunter Sute.
Top L-R: Connor Ball, Brady Garcia OR Ben Hess OR Will Hodo (not sure), Brandon Clarke, Camden Hayslip, Jimmy Thies, Andrew (Kade) Woods
Players in the 2021 HS recruiting class missing in the picture include: Brady Garcia OR Ben Hess OR Will Hodo (again, not sure who that is in the photo, so not sure who the two others are that are missing), Noah Miller (expected to go pro), and Luke Holman (MLB Draft candidate as well).

Happy for Dylan and Peyton, but…

I’m not gonna lie, I’m actually excited about this upcoming season. I hope we finish strong in the portal if we try and snag anyone else.

Dylan has a lot of movement for a RH but I am surprised he is rated that high right now. I knew last year when I saw him he has potential but thought he could work on an out pitch one more year

Thankfully that is just college draft prospects, not overall draft prospects, so we can probably expect them to be around the 60-70 range of overall prospects. I've always thought we lose Smith, but Wilson stays, but who really knows. If either or both of them go in the first 2 rounds I'd say they're gone, but after that it's up in the air.

Thanks for catching that… I didn’t . Makes more sense now

I’d walk to Omaha, if it meant Alabama was there.

Any junior taken in the top 10 rounds you can generally expect to leave.
Posted on 7/7/21 at 6:56 pm to Bham Bammer
That's not true of the upper echelon teams in college baseball and we'll need to get to that level to start competing with them. Having guys leave after getting drafted in Round 7 is something we are used to, but not something the top teams have happening as often. Plenty of $ to be earned with a bump up a few rounds.

No, a junior drafted in the tenth round will earn more in signing bonus than a senior drafted in the 6th round. It’s all about leverage. I’m not saying they never return, but players with one season of college eligibility remaining generally are going to bounce - regardless of what team they play on - if picked that highly. Now, the COVID year impacting eligibility could make things a little more interesting but I’d be surprised.

Here’s an article from 2019 when we had the last full draft.
There were a grand total of TWO draft picks in the first 10 rounds that didn’t sign. One was a HS player and one was a JUCO player.
LINK
Here is the number of unsigned players from the top 10 rounds from the last few drafts:
2014 - 6
2015 - 6
2016 - 2
2017 - 3
2018 - 4
2019 - 2
So from 2014-2019 there were a total of 23 unsigned players out of roughly 1,900 selections in rounds 1-10. I could go back and research but I’d bet that almost all of those were high school players.

Good to see him doing well. The Northwoods League is probably second behind the Cape Cod in terms of quality.

Wow! That's definitely eye opening. Can't argue with statistics. I think I knew most guys drafted that high would sign, but didn't know it was that many. Obviously scouts have a good bit more knowledge on who may or may not sign and end up not drafting a player high if there is a question about their signability, especially HS guys.
Yeah I wonder if the COVID year will throw things out of wach since all Juniors now have an extra year of leverage on their hands, but especially a guy like Peyton Wilson who has two more years of leverage (but ovbiously wouldn't want to take that long due to age draftability concerns).
All that to say, thanks for that info and sorry that I refuted your assertion without the evidence to back it up. I definitely stand corrected.

No question that is a MAJOR part of HS players being drafted. You’d have never seen a guy like Leiter last until the 20th round out of HS or Rocker lasting until the 38th round. It was known they were going to Vandy.
As for the 10th round deal, I was surprised myself when I researched how rare unsigned players had become. I knew it wasn’t many but I never thought it was that overwhelming.

Scouting departments were worried about the college hitting class entering the year, but there was hope that throughout the spring players would step forward and make it at least average. That doesn’t appear to have been the case. Most evaluators see the college hitters as the weakest demographic of the group—with a notable absence of shortstops and corner profiles with power—and it’s a solidly below-average college hitting class overall.
The college pitching saw attrition during the season as potential top-10 players like Gunnar Hoglund and Jaden Hill suffered season-ending injuries, but the group seems solid or a tick above-average on talent—but significantly below-average in terms of innings and established track record.
Overall, the 2021 class seems weaker than teams would prefer at the very top, but with elite depth that might leave organizations more excited with their draftees on Days Two and Three than in a typical year.
