We’re not even to spring practice yet and it’s already starting.
I love it. Haha.

Ty Simpson pass attempts v. USF
1st Half ~5 minutes left
1: (1st and goal) Complete miss by LG on interior blitz; no hope, throws out of bounds near receiver to avoid ground loss. [Incomplete]
2: (3rd and goal) Everyone covered (seemed to be going for tailback in flat but USF picked him up), blindside sack before some of the end zone routes could develop. [Sack]
3: Had to escape pocket, decided to throw since it was under 30 seconds remaining in 1st half, throw goes off hands of Benson. In general, bad decision with the green grass in front of him but makes sense in context. [Incomplete]
4: Looking for a deep pass, got decent initial protection, eventually has to move out of the pocket a bit to extend for the WRs, throws out of bounds since nobody open. [Incomplete]
Summary: 0/3 in the first half. Had major protection issues in the goal to go possession. In the sub-1 minute offense, they were looking for chunk yardage and the receivers sorta let him down.
2nd Half
5: WR false start creates 3rd and 10. Protection initially good but nobody is open past the sticks. Before Simpson could dump it to the shallow cross to see if they can make it happen with YAC, gets blind sided by a rusher. [Sack]
6: TE screen called on 1st and 10 but USF stays home on 81 and he just lets the pass drop to avoid the loss (thats my guess). [Incomplete]
7: 81 runs a deep over from inline to the LT to the right side of the field. Simpson puts it right in the bread basket. [Complete]
8: Play action sprint out to 45 in the flat. Not a great throw but did have a DE in his face when he threw it. Better pass is a TD more than likely. [Complete]
9: 2 man route, max protection. 81 lets go of his man and turns for a dump off. His guy immediately gets on top of Simpson looking downfield for one of his 2 options to get separation. [Sack]
10: LT gets beat badly at the snap for another blind side. [Sack]
11: Stays tall in pocket despite it collapsing. Tosses a pass at the tailback for minimal gain. [Complete]
12: Nobody open, Simpson runs for ~10 yards but short of first down. [No Pass]
13: 17 runs a levels type pattern and Simpson delivers on time and such that Bond could continue the route for YAC. [Complete]
14: Looking to get a wheel route to the tailback but it was covered. Simpson had to double clutch to scan for the 2nd option but gets sacked from the right side. [Sack]
15: Threw an out to Burton but nothing on the primary side seemed to have a hope of getting a first down. [Complete]
Summary: 5/6 in second half. Was not asked to do much, the playcalling in the pass game seemed to just be to look for deep passes for chunk yards. In 15 drop backs, he was sacked 5 times and was pressured on 4 other pass attempts. 60% of his snaps ended in a sack or a pressure. Completed 5/9 overall. Hit 2 legitimately good passes (81’s big reception in the 3rd quarter and 17’s 1st down catch in the 4th quarter); the other 3 were just Simpson executing the offense but the play call going nowhere.
I do not understand how someone could dismiss Simpson after that showing. The offensive line was awful and the receivers did not get open. This would be a recurring problem during the season regardless of quarterback. Ultimately the reason Alabama loss the Rose Bowl.

This isn't BAMA. Any time the receivers or TEs touch the ball they're as good as any. Burton, Niblack, Law, and Bond should be terrorizing defenses. Milroe can't throw.

The wrs were also a weakness going back to last year when we had Bryce Young.
I do think Bond has the potential to be really good next year, and Ryan Williams of course will help.

Yeah, Alabama's WRs have not been able to generate separation any way but "go run away from the guy" but that falls apart when the DBs are well coached and prepared for your offense. Alabama has big time coaching problems at WR and OL. At least WR is 100% lock to get a new coach. My guess is Wolford is in a put-up-or-shut-up year in 2024.

The defense did play good in the parts of the game but they also let Michigan score on two running plays in OT. The defense also gave up 20 points to Michigan in regulation which isn’t great.
It was a team loss, we didn’t play great in any area except special teams.

I will agree the defense decided to have a really bad final five minutes there and it’s definitely a valid critique. I was sitting in the stadium basically begging for a timeout just to let them reset, we’ve had a few drives this year where the defense just seems out of sync and gives up a quick score. That’s been my only gripe with Steele and otherwise the hire has gone above and beyond what I expected.
I just hate deflecting the blame entirely on the defense there, it never should have came to that drive in the first place. The defense played well enough to win that game 99% of the time if we just executed on offense

Yeah I agree the defense definitely wasn't the the main reason, they played really well for stretches. I think that we couldn’t get their defense blocked on passing plays was a much bigger issue. Milroe could’ve played better, wrs had a couple of drops, we didn’t play our A game.

Things I notice in this QB argument are the same things that pop up with every QB argument in CFB. Ppl try to tear down the QB they don’t want in order to justify starting the other guy. It happens both ways.
Ty Simpson showed a lot of promise in late year action. I wasn’t impressed by him either up until that UK game. He looked really good against Kentucky and Chatt. He’s capable of getting better. That USF game shouldn’t be stamped on his forehead for eternity…just like Milroe’s performance against Texas or Michigan should not be stamped on his forehead for eternity either.
I just want the best player to play. Not the guy with most seniority or the guy who’s the most popular on the team. The best QB for our team and for our offense to succeed. That’s all I can ask for.

Yeah and I'm not saying Simpson should be the QB1 in 2024. I'm just saying he did not perform as poorly as people recollect because everyone was so disgusted with the overall performance. Buchner was running a more "open" offense. Simpson came in and they really condensed the playbook and focused on the run.

Same. Before the season I would’ve bet a lot on Ty Simpson being the guy.
When I saw them in games I thought Milroe looked better this year but Ty wasn’t bad by any means, he has potential to be really good. Big props to Ty for not transferring too he seems like a team first guy, hopefully both qbs push each other and improve a lot in the offseason.

Guys relax. I’ll lock the thread if we can’t be civil.

If you watch Buchner tape from that game, he was evading pressure (one sack) and was running the offense well in terms of making reads and adjustments. If he makes that endzone deep throw maybe three or four inches shorter Burton would’ve had a touchdown
The main issue was he couldn’t hit the broadside of a fricking barn, I’m not sure where that came from but he’s never been that inaccurate even at ND

To this day I don't understand why Nick Saban signed that guy to a scholly. I can understand him as the scout team walk-on QB but no way in hell a starter.

He had a major shoulder injury and was never the same after.

Buchner is one of those what if prospects. Injuries and the COVID issue during his senior year robbed him of a lot of practice snaps and his main issue is mechanics needing a rework. He’s probably the best runner we have at the QB position based on his ND tape and his physical measurables/arm are fine. His interceptions at ND were largely him forcing tight throws and it being deflected out, which you can coach away. But his mechanics just have him all over the place at times plus the shoulder injury seems to have robbed something
I think the idea was he could compete for a starting role and improve into a suitable backup/starter at some point + he knew a good chunk of Rees’ plays. That Kendrick law rollout play was done during USF with him, well before Milroe even ran it weeks later.
He’s just so late in his career now that he basically has to bank on a redshirt senior year to start and Simpson has the inside track on him at a younger age.
