This Nike deal looks like something else is going on here than the deal itself.
Kickbacks? Under the table payoffs? Hope not. But when a deal is so obviously under negotiated and re-negotiated the thought does arise. Leaving $100+million on the table when you are the King of the Hill is unpardonable for any business.

Because we basically punted on 10s of millions of dollars while our value is at its peak.
UA football will likely NEVER be as valuable as it is right now, coming off the fifth title in nine years.
This costs the university between $100-$120 MILLION dollars. And it was done by a man who made himself a millionaire as a licensing executive. Disappointing is not a strong enough word.

Ok. New plan. Go to Nike and tell them you want to renegotiate. Tell them to either renegotiate, or donate $100m to build a new basketball arena. If they donate to the arena, we'll give them the naming rights. If they refuse to do either of those, then we'll refuse to sign a new contract with them in 2025.
That's a pretty good idea.

It could be a case of bad timing and hindsight, but its disappointing that Alabama's contract is ranked as low as it is in the market and the school could've had a $100 million more in the bank. Some analysts believe that if we had renegotiated this year when the original contract came up, the contract would've set the market.
All of this....it sure as frick ain't a market deal....we could and should have done better.

Someone feel free to forward that idea to Byrne. He just mentioned the other day that we can't just write a check and build a new arena.

So in other words, Bill Battle, the supposed business genius, fricked up yet again, and fricked us out of millions of dollars. Battle will go down as the biggest mistake as AD at Alabama since Bob Bockrath and may rival him as the worst ever.

It wasn't a market deal when it was extended, shortly after winning back to back NC's. If that date is right, this is literally the first thing Battle did when he walked in the door as AD.
In 7 years, this extension will be 12 years old, and will likely be among the smallest in all of P5, when it should have been the largest. That low starting point won't help our negotiation position much.
Again, HOLY shite, this is a frickton of lost money, and every penny of would have been profit.
ETA- for a little perspective on how much that $120 million or so really is - Auburn built an entirely new basketball arena for $86 million.

They get to sign a 20 year rental agreement on one owned by the BJCC.

The Nike Deal to Goff to being forced to fire Anthony Grant, Battle really didn’t leave a good legacy. After publicly striking out on Marshall, Avery fell in his lap. I know Battle made a ton of money with Collegiate Licensing, but he was in the right place at the right time thanks to Coach Bryant’s help. (To be fair, it’s that way with a lot of businesses) So when we talk about his “negotiating skills,” it’s not like he was Jeff Bezos and started out in his garage.
I’m just trying to figure out the sense of urgency to signing it in 2013 when the deal was only 3 years old.

Concerning the Crimson Standard News today, I found this bit of new interesting. Byrne said that they looked into demolishing Coleman and building a brand new arena, but it would’ve cost an additional $70 million.
That Nike money would’ve really come hand. Thanks Battle.

I don’t want a basketball player on my football team’s uniforms.

In a $600m project, what's an extra 70?

but why should a fan care?
Because that would have paid for 15%-20% of the $600 million bill the fans are being asked to foot.
