LINK ]Saban gives injury updates on Josh Jacobs, Stephon Wynn (BOL | embedded video)

quote:

Despite appearing limited during the last four media viewing periods of Alabama’s fall camp, running back Josh Jacobs is no longer hampered by his injured ankle.

“He’s absolutely 100 percent,” said Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban after Wednesday’s practice. “He’s had a really good first five days of camp. He’s very explosive, very quick, very fast. Doesn’t seem to have any issue. Been able to take all the reps. Done extremely well.”

Jacobs underwent surgery on his injured ankle after the national championship game and did not participate in the spring game. This week, he has mostly watched his teammates in drills. But according to his head coach, Jacobs has had no limitations on the practice field.

The Tulsa, Okla., native missed the first two games of his sophomore year due to a hamstring injury but finished with 12 games of action, including one start. He totaled 284 yards on 46 carries and a touchdown, while catching 14 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns. He also worked on kickoff return, taking back four kicks for 86 yards with a long return of 23 yards.

His fellow running back, Brian Robinson, also appeared limited Wednesday, not taking part in many drills while reporters watched practice. But Saban did not provide an update on Robinson.

The 12th-year head coach did, however, share news of an injury to a defensive lineman.

Stephon Wynn did get injured yesterday in practice,” Saban said. “It’s not a surgical-type injury, but it is a ligament strain that will probably keep him out for a little bit of time. We hate to lose anybody. We need all the help we can get and all the depth we can, especially with big people and especially in the front seven.”

A true freshman, Wynn enrolled early at Alabama and participated in the 2018 A-Day Game. He was the No. 3-rated strong-side defensive end, No. 16 player in the state of South Carolina and No. 74 overall 2018 prospect, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Wynn had been working with the third group of defensive linemen in practice, along with other newcomers Tevita Musika and Christian Barmore. Isaiah Buggs, Raekwon Davis and Quinnen Williams have led the group through five days of fall camp, while Johnny Dwight, LaBryan Ray and Phidarian Mathis made up the second unit working with coach Craig Kuligowski.

Alabama will hold its sixth practice of the preseason on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Thread: Saban and the players handling this, well, just like you'd expect.

LINK ]Saban reacts to Hurts' comments, which won't affect QB situation (BamaOnLine)

Those expecting a fiery public reaction from Nick Saban in regards to the recent comments made by Alabama junior quarterback Jalen Hurts will be sorely disappointed.

Following the Crimson Tide’s fifth preseason practice Wednesday, Saban was asked about Hurts’ strong statements regarding the quarterback battle and the coach’s remarks about his future at SEC Media Days. Saban said he spoke with the signal caller and team leaders.

And what Hurts said will not affect the current quarterback competition.

“My comments were every player has a right to express what he feels and what he thinks, and I think he has every right to do that with every coach or anybody in the organization that he has relationships with, which we certainly do quite often with all players at all positions,” Saban said. “But look, this is probably a lot more important to people outside this organization than it is to people inside. I don’t think this has any effect on our team. I talked to a lot of the team leaders. The players are focused on what they need to do.

“The rhetoric will not have anything to do with who’s the quarterback. That will obviously be decided on the field by how people execute, how they do their job. The same parameters that we talked about before in terms of who wins the team. And winning the team goes along with execution, leadership, players having confidence and belief, and that’s not really going to change. So, I don’t really have any more to say about it than that. I don’t think it’s anything that has affected our team one way or the other.”

At the Crimson Tide’s annual Media Day on Saturday, Hurts was allowed to speak to reporters for the first time since being replaced by Tua Tagovailoa in the College Football Playoff national title game. It was the first time we have heard his side of the story after his father spoke of a possible transfer and Saban claimed to not know if he would be on UA’s Game 1 roster.

But the two-year starter had plenty to say.

“I think as a player you definitely want to feel some concern from your coaches, I guess,” Hurts said. “But I don’t necessarily think they were not concerned, because they’re definitely concerned. I just don’t think that maybe they were bold enough to ask, like it was, I know it’s there but I don’t want to talk about it. I definitely think it was something that should have been talked about a long time ago instead of being talked about when it’s here.

“It’s kind of like a stove: after that game the stove got turned on, the heat got turned up and now it’s like, OK, I put the pot on the stove, I put the food on the stove, now the food is cooking, and come the season when it officially starts the food will be done.”

But like Saban said, he discussed what made headlines with the veterans on Alabama’s team.

“I just think (it brought) closure,” Ross Pierschbacher said. “We’re all ready to move forward. It’s not about those two guys and what happens with that. We’re going to play regardless and we’re just excited to get back out on the field, be together and grow as a team and grow as a family, as well. Closer together and just getting ready for the season. I think it was a good thing.

“Get everything out on the table and just go forward, put it to the side, put it to rest and we’re just excited to be as a team together and go forward, move forward together.”

Alabama will hold its sixth practice of the preseason on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 7:30 p.m. CT.

I was perusing some practice photos, and it jogged my memory of some folks - we have assembled some absolutely stupid skill position talent: WRs, TEs, RBs - just a silly amount of talent. I cannot wait to see this offense this year, as I'm also high on Locksley. Is this the year the O is as good as the D? Can't wait.

It's amazing how you can just look at Bama's practice photos and get a sense of just how insane the talent level is.

See Patrick Surtain Jr out there? He just got on campus. And he looks like a guy who belongs on an NFL roster with his size and build. Eyabi Anoma? Same thing. Gotta coach 'em up though.

I don't see how Surtain stays off the field. Smith and Diggs would be a fine duo at Corner, but if Surtain has his head in that playbook...

I hope Kaho comes in and help i hate seeing Allen at OLB. I think he has a lot of potential and will be a factor for us in the future.

I like Allen at OLB but I think he's got huge potential. Similar to Rashaan Evans but probably without the great first step off the edge. Problem with Evans was, we knew he had that great pass rush, but he rarely used it bc he was needed in the middle. I think the same is true of Moses.

I think everyone misinterpreted his "easing into it" in practice as being limited and therefore hurt. I'm not sure if there was a black jersey at some point in practice 1 or 2.

Either way, it's confirmed he's fine now.

yea but if that Ga world class kicker doesnt put them up by 3, we probably would have run the ball 3 times and botched another field goal, like we did when we got to the 20 in regulation. Better to put it in Tua's hands, than split the corner of the end zone with a field goal attempt. People talk about Tua making a big mistake in OT with the sack, but the dude basically had to win the game twice, from 13 points down.

LINK ]Thursday practice report: More movement in Tide LB corps (al.comm)

ESPN presence remains strong in Titletown.
quote:

Alabama returned to the field Thursday, holding a preseason practice at night for the first time this year. The Crimson Tide was in full pads with the temperature 78 degrees and the skies clear.

Here are a few observations from limited period of access provided to the media:

-- During a pass rushing drill, redshirt senior outside linebacker Christian Miller offered some advice to freshman Eyabi Anoma about arm positioning.

-- Sophomore Chris Allen was seen working with the outside linebackers after he had been spotted with the inside linebackers earlier this week. The imminent arrival of Ale Kaho, who was released from his letter of intent with Washington before committing to Alabama, may have prompted the move. Ben Davis was also working with the outside linebackers and was at the back of the line during an early drill.

-- Both Ronnie Clark and Brian Robinson were spotted at H-Back in an I-formation look out of Pistol at the outset of practice.

-- Alabama appeared to be working various combinations in the secondary. In one group, Xavier McKinney was at safety, Trevon Diggs at cornerback and Shyheim Carter at Star. In another, Deionte Thompson was at safety, Saivion Smith at cornerback and Jared Mayden at Star.

-- The ESPN presence remains strong in Tuscaloosa. Seen on the sideline were ESPN host Maria Taylor and reporter Holly Rowe.
