Disagree. He needs to be able to play but held out until he is needed. He is the perfect Wild Cat Qb.
L7U MSU and Auburn are games he may be needed in.
Just one mans opinion.

Ps. Do not burn his redshirt.

Nick Saban isn't going to play that BS 4 game deal with Jalen Hurts. He is either all in for the good of this years team or he is out.

I agree. I also don't think it's in Jaylen's best interest to redshirt. If he wants to transfer in January to be the #1 QB on another team, it's probably better for him to play as much as he can as the #2 QB at Bama this season.

Imo, a grad transfer QB with 2 years of eligibility who's only played mop up in 4 games in 2018 after a not very good showing during the latter part of the prior season (likely stagnating his development and getting rusty) is less attractive than if he has one year of eligibility but has played three times as much during 2018 to continue his development and demonstrate that he's improved in the areas he'd struggle with.

It seems to me that continuing his development will raise his stock as a grad transfer more than holding a clipboard on the sidelines to preserve another year of eligibility will. And having only one year of eligibility left probably wouldn't drop his grad transfer stock much, if any.

For example, LSU would've probably still taken the OSU grad transfer QB regardless of whether he had two years or only one year of eligibility left. Likewise, UT would've still taken Brandon Kennedy if he only had one year of eligibility left.

ETA: If the grad transfer QB LSU added only had one year to play, LSU might've been able to hang on to at least one of the two young QBs that decided to transfer out.

Bottom line: The four game redshirt rule is nice, but I don't think it makes sense for Jalen to try to redshirt this season. If he wants to do that, Bama should seriously consider making Mac the #2 QB this season instead of Jalen. Give Mac the reps to develop him, in case Tua gets injured.

Not sure who is undeserving on that ESPN list, I just am shocked that only 2 Alabama players made it this year

I'd probably put R. Davis over Collin Ferrell. Ferrell's stats are ridiculously inflated by two games, NCST/Syracuse. Without those two games, he finishes with only 5 sacks and 7.5 TFL

Having 2 years of eligibility makes him significantly more attractive as a transfer target though

While I do agree that CNS is very unlikely to play that 4 game red shirt game, there are plenty of schools that will take Jalen based on what they have already seen, and they would rather have 2 years than 1. But, I think we are likely to see a 2 headed QB deal this year. Saban has thrown that out there more than once.

There's no doubt in my mind that Tua will be the #1 QB. It'll be interesting to see how the play calling differs when the #2 QB is on the field.

Five Alabama players were named to the Associated Press 2018 preseason All-America teams.

Two offensive linemen made the first team in junior left tackle Jonah Williams and redshirt senior center Ross Pierschbacher, while senior running back Damien Harris, junior defensive end Raekwon Davis and junior inside linebacker Mack Wilson were on the second team. Earlier on Tuesday, Williams and Pierschbacher were named to ESPN’s preseason All-America team.

The Crimson Tide’s five picks tied with Wisconsin for the most by one school on this year’s preseason AP All-America teams. Clemson and Stanford were next with four apiece, while Washington and Notre Dame each had three players chosen. The Southeastern Conference led all leagues with 13 players honored. The Pac-12 was second with 12...

he will do the 2 headed deal but when it comes to the tough D's like LSU etc he will not be splitting time as much. First 3 games should be ok

I agree. When we get to the 4th qtr and the game is still on the line, Tua will get the call.

Saban is smarter than that.

There's nothing that Jalen can do that Tua can't. What the frick is the point of playing them both? That extra inch in height? Jalen's reputation as a powerlifter?

I feel like he's gonna play both guys in the first two games, even if Tua is the guy. I don't think he should, to be honest, simply because like one of y'all said the other day we're better with Tua on the field. So why take Tua off the field?

Alabama Practice Report: Updated on Injured Players, DBs

quote:

After practicing indoors Monday, Alabama was back outside Tuesday for a full-pads workout in Tuscaloosa.

A quick taste of what we observed in the media viewing period:

-- Matt Womack, the injured right tackle, was spotted on scooter with his broken foot elevated. He'll be out a while.

-- Najee Harris was not seen with the running backs group. Nick Saban last week said they expect he'll be back from a foot injury before the Sept. 1 opener with Louisville.

-- The secondary practiced in the dime formation for a few minutes. The cornerbacks were Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith, safeties were Deionte Thompson and Jared Mayden with Shyheim Carter at star and Xavier McKinney.

-- The second group had true freshmen Patrick Surtain II and Josh Jobe at cornerback. Keaton Anderson and Mayden were safeties with Diggs at star.

-- The freshmen at middle linebacker -- Ale Kaho and Jaylen Moody -- were working in the third wave behind the second group of Joshua McMillen and Markail Benton and apparent starters Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses. Read more about Moses' freshman year.

-- There were a few new players out there as the rosters start to expand with school starting Wednesday.

When the media is out there Saban is not going to show his hand. Word is the two QBs have been switching throughout camp. We'll see what happens during game week next week.
