Sunshine pumper post. Things I was encouraged by from this game...
1. Keon Ellis's continued progression. Feel he's earned a starting nod.
2. 2nd half defense was what we've come to expect.
3. Juwan Gary isn't flashy, but he's just a hard playing basketball player. Does a good job being where he needs to be on both ends.
4. Quinerly seems to be coming out of his funk. He had a few dumb decisions, but also made a couple of big 3's and a few good finishes at the rim. He was very active on the defensive end as well.
5. They never quit and had the ball in the last minute to take the lead, then a chance to tie the game. It's a moral victory, but after being down 20+ in the second half, I'll take the moral victory.
None of that erases the abysmal first half, or the awful start to the 2nd half offensively.

Tuesday worries me a little bit. If we can get by Tuesday I think we will go 4-0 these next 4 and lock the SEC up

Tuesday's game isn't going to be a gimme either. South Carolina is the kind of team that's given us fits. They're pretty poor in offensive efficiency, so it shouldn't be a game the team drops IF they respond well.

Yeah that's kind of ridiculous. Winning the sec would be a major accomplishment for us. We've been the definition of mediocre for the better part of the last 15 years.

I don't think I can remember an intelligent post you have ever made..
Not even trying to pile on.. I'm being serious

Primo has scored a combined 4 points in the last 3 games. Ellis should for sure start over him.

No mention of Ellis in Oates post game?

Petty can get to the rim at times and finish better,
I disagree. Petty is horrendous trying to dribble the basketball. He can’t really get his own shot. That’s my theory why has he struggled so much the last few games. Our offense has become guys trying to go one on one too much instead of driving to kick to the open guy-which lots of time is Petty.

Another thought on the last minute. The last two play calls were plays for Herb at the rim. He’s not very good at finishing. I don’t think they were bad play calls necessarily but if we are in a tight Sweet 16 game, I don’t want our season to come down to Herb trying to finish at the rim.

Did I hear correctly that we’re the most blocked team in P5?

We're #343 nationally in shots blocked per game.....out of 348.

He is rusty because he hasn't been practicing. Didnt play much in the last game either.
I understand calling the plays for him, he is a senior, the team leader. He is rusty though and isn't 100%. In retrospect it probably should've been called for someone else.
He clearly got fouled on that last layup attempt. Not by the guy that blocked it but he was undercut by #12 while shooting.

All of this may be for the best. The last thing we would need is to go to the final 4 as a Cinderella story, back up the brinks truck, and then Oats fails to continue to produce and we get stuck with a big salary. It would be great to go to the sweet 16 and then see if Oats can sustain before trying to keep the bigger schools away from him. And the sweet 16 is probably a good ceiling for this team. The one good thing about the post season is the week's rest between series of games. Play two and then rest up.
We got out coached today. But, anytime teams are pretty evenly matched one or the other can get out coached. It just happens.
It will be interesting to see how well Oats recruits and what sorts of offensive adjustments he makes. Will he look to go to a more traditional offensive set in order to open up more variables. As it sits, it looks like our offense is fragile. If we don't hit 3s at a high rate we are in trouble and if certain defensive adjustments are made, we seem to be unable to adjust. Oats still has to show that he can generate a different offense when his has been clearly figured out.
The defense is great. That can keep a team in a lot of games and even win them, as we have seen this year.
We need more depth. We have some guys who can spell starters, but there is some real drop off at places, mostly due to maturity.
We need an elite point guard. Someone like Shariff Cooper.

Won't help us this year but we got one of those on his way in about 6 months

I wouldn't call it their ceiling, but at this very minute I think that's as far as we get, because...

While I don't think we need an elite one, we do need an above average one to make a deep run in the tourney. The only thing that can really counter that for us is taking a lot of 3's, and making around 40% of them. We can grind out games like the Kentucky and Miss State ones when there are off days in the schedule. Right now, we can't grind out two in a row like that, unless someone emerges as a true PG. Quinnerly is our best shot at that.
