That's the fate of pretty much every good mid-major program other than Gonzaga, who also has a funny name but will mercilessly beat the everliving shite out of you.

Mark Few has been there since 1999 and they are 606-124. Their worst record in that span is 23-9.
They play in a crappy conference relative to how good they are, but that's still impressive as hell.
Made the NCAAT every year he's been there with the exception of last season due to cancellation.

Pretty sure that’s just a reflection of the current standings. I don’t think they “pick” a conference tourney winner... they just use whoever is currently at the top of the conference standings.

Obviously that exact draw won’t happen, but that would be about as ideal as I feel we could get. Would rather be a 6 against a disappointing major 11 seed than a 5 against a top tier mid major 12 seed.
