Seth Greenberg and Dan Dakich do a CBB podcast for ESPN and they did separate pods for each region that are 15-20 minutes apiece. I listened to the East region pod so that y’all don’t have to.

Greenberg has us losing to UConn and has Texas winning the region.

Dakich has us losing to Texas and has FSU winning the region.

That is very impressive for a man that can’t even walk.

Sucks that he isn’t going to be 100% for these games.

I am shocked that a dude who constantly dogs our program and dismisses our style of play as a gimmick would predict we get bounced early. Shocked.

I groaned and hurt on his behalf when he dove for a loose ball over the weekend. Can’t remember if it was the UT or LSU game.

National Defensive Rating - vs Top 100 teams
1. Herb Jones (Alabama) (80.0)
2. Josiah-Jordan James (Tennessee) (81.8)
3. Nathan Mensah (SDSU) (81.9)
4. Keon Ellis (Alabama) (82.0)
5. Cameron Krutwig (Loyola Chicago) (82.8)
6. Evan Mobley (USC) (83.4)
7. Myles Johnson (Rutgers) (83.5)
8. Lucas Williamson (Loyola Chicago) (83.6)
9. Justin Gorham (Houston) (83.7)
10. Isaiah Jackson (Kentucky) (84.4)
10. Jalen Suggs (Gonzaga) (84.4)

- Herb Jones is the best defender in the country

- Keon Ellis ain't far behind

I honestly am struggling to think of a guy that we've had that's a better defensive player than Herb. I am old enough to have some memories of Alabama basketball going back to the early 90s and it's not like a whole lot of names jump out.

Like was Robert Horry that good? I honestly can't remember. I just remember him trying to guard Shaq and struggling

Roy Rogers was a hell of a shot blocker.

Chris Hines was good, but not Herb good and not as versatile.

Did the Gottfried teams have a lockdown defender that I'm forgetting about? That was a lockdown guy in spite of Gottfried?

I may well be forgetting some obvious choices.

March Madness 2021: Ranking the 68 NCAA Tournament teams

quote:

5. Alabama Crimson Tide (24-6, 16-2 SEC)
Gold Star Leader: Herb Jones (11.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 3.4 apg)

Good luck finding many teams more entertaining than Alabama. The Crimson Tide are one of the very few teams that can play at a ridiculously fast pace and still rank extremely high on the defensive end. They hold the second-best adjusted defensive efficiency rating in the country while playing at the ninth-fastest tempo. ‘Bama defends the arc extremely well and forces their fair share of turnovers. Herb Jones is an All-American and easily one of the best defenders in the country. Offensively, head coach Nate Oats’ team launches threes at the 17th-highest rate. They can still win without hitting the three thanks to their elite defense, but nobody is beating them when they are connecting from distance. Jahvon Quinerly has been blossoming down the stretch.

TR Dunn and Anthony Murray on the same team. I remember coach Newton saying that Amp could guard Godzilla. The double teams that those two put on were a sight to behold.

Horry was good, but not on Herb's level.

Keith Askins was a great defender in the mid to late 80's. Antione Pettway was a great defender for Gottfried. Gottfried had another whose name is escaping me.

Yeah, TR Dunn is the one you always hear about, but it was before my time.

I feel like I remember Sprewell was sort of known for his defense before his offense took off, but I could be getting that mixed up. He also wasn't here that long.

Just found this article about Booney Russell . He was on the same team with TR, Anthony Murray, Charles Cleveland and Leon Douglas . Maybe my all-time favorite Alabama team. LINK
