The board superfans and basketball snobs like to say it's because UCLA was having a super tournament, but Bama could have easily won that game if they a hit a couple of free throws to stay out of overtime.

THIS...we had them beat if we'd made our free throws.

Those guys that can’t shoot free throws won’t be on the court in close games. And that’s mostly the reserves.

No, just no. Compared to last year….

Nelson is down 15% (66% from 81% last year)
Sears is down (81.3 from 85.7)
Stevenson is down 15% (53 from 68)
Philon is shooting 69%
Holloway is shooting almost exactly the same as he shot last year at AU.(77%) .
Reid is shooting 50%
Cliff is shooting 65% compared to 61% last year.

Only Mo is shooting drastically better (73 up from 47)

Other than Youngblood, that’s the bulk of Bama’s minutes and are absolutely the guys that will be on the floor in close games.

Bama is #237th in FT % right now. Bama was 20th last year.

Grant Nelson is hitting 66% this year. He made 81% last year. Sears went from 85% to 81%. Reid, a first year player, has he 3rd most attempts and he's at 50%.

I think it will get better as the season goes on, but it ain't great right now.
This is what I'm saying, and it'll cost us some close games.

It has to get better.I watch Reid out there and when he gets to the line I KNOW he's going to brick at least one.

I've never understood how a player can drill a three with a hand in his face yet cant walk to the line and make 8 of 10. We make our FT's at South Carolina we win by 25 plus.

This is objectively a true statement. Missed FTs cost games, especially critical ones.
However our team from last year and this year have shot FTs well at crucial junctures.
If this continues we should fare well even in big games. Overall our FTs shooting has been disappointing.

I'll agree in principle with the OP.

Let's just do some quick math.
Let's say you shoot an average of 20 free throws a game.
We average about 70%
That's 14 points on 20 FTs.
If we'd average 80%, that's an additional 2 points a game.

I'll say there will be at least 2 games that will come down to the last shot.
Not to mention an overall mindset of opposing coaches that will just as well foul us, rather than defend, which could lead to us quickly losing a small lead late in a game

Can you promise that Alabama will lose just 2 games in conference?

The last couple of years I’ve not worried about free throws thinking they’ll hit most. This year it seems to have gotten worse by the game. No stats to back this up just how I feel throughout the games.

Nelson’s form has changed on his shot again so he looks terrible at the line currently. He’s got to fix that. Stevenson has no confidence anywhere he has to shoot so I don’t know if his percentage will turn around. We just need Sears to continue to be our foul merchant and hope the other guys turn it around.

Sears always seemed automatic, now he’s missing the first one some. Probably his mom bothering him and giving bad advice lol

Grant is the main one that needs to turn it around in a big way since we'll count on him more in late game situations.

But, yeah, Stevenson (and Reid) both get fouled a lot.

Odd that we're doing everything on the offensive end extremely well except actually shooting open shots.

We could have lost tonight because of the FT shooting.

You guys are right. Missed too many Ft tonight but that was a top 10 team on the road, at night.

Not going to beat every team by 30.

If Reid and Stevenson alone got better they'd likely play more. Reid gets fouled quite a bit.

Turnovers are more concerning IMO. It’s so bad. Like dumbass stupid turnovers the entire game. 21. What a number that’s like an entire half of points.

They turned it over one every THREE trips!
It was similar to what you'd see at a 6-7 years old YMCA league basketball game.
