Yeah I don't think letting in state kids get away is the problem. The only Alabama kid that I can think of off the top of my head that would really help this team is Ed Daniel at Murray State. And he would have been recruited by Gottfried.
When I say Grant focuses on the wrong players I mean that he seems to put all our eggs in one basket, and when we miss on that player there is no backup plan, which is why we have 3 unused scholarships this year.

He plays for a 4A school and I think they are ranked in the top 10 in state so he should be playing against decent competition. I read Grant went and watched him on the 12th.

There was a PG from Butler a couple years back. Indiana has about 2 or 3 of our kids recently. We have plenty of talent its just slept on. Look at Ricky Tarrant at Tulane. Yea its Tulane but he still is doing well. Just think that before we have anymore classes that arent full we need to be giving some of these kids a chance or somebody a chance.

Well the only top kids that will stay in state are kids that more than likely grew up Bama fans. Getting Cousins, Bledsoe, and Watford wouldve changed our program completly around. I think the next couple years will show wheteher or not we can keep in state talent because there are some high profiled kids coming up and all the big schools will be on them.

Ill say this. Grant has to open up and stop being so tight liped about recruiting. Doesnt he see the love the football kids get. I know its not the same but just saying.

Saw this on another board on Haas. "The kid definitely has athletic genes. His dad is Joe King. He was a big time o-lineman at Bama but got into a lot of trouble." Also said Kansas was getting serious with him but family wants to keep him close to home.

Tarrant came out the same year as Lacey, Levi, Coop, Moussa, and Nick. Which of those players do you pass on to take him?
I would have loved to have Christian Wattford and DJ White in Tuscaloosa, but that just wasn't going to happen. I'm all for taking good in state players. However, the borderline guys don't like being slow played. The end up signing with the school that "showed them love." See JaCorey Williams.

Pretty much how I feel. If there is marginal difference in a kid from Birmingham and a kid from Atlanta I'd rather see us focus on the in state player. However, scraping the bottom of the barrel just to fill our roster with Alabama kids is self defeating and just plain stupid.

Its not stupid at all when we have had games this year that walk on have played.

So has Florida.
How does being from Alabama suddenly turn a kid from a 4 year bench warmer into a contributor? If he's good enough to play then fine, if he isn't why would you want to give him a scholarship?

My whole point is that some are good enough. If we are going to play his style we have to play more players and need more quality players. Also about Tarrant you asked who in that class shouldnt have come if we were to take him and I would say Retin since he doesnt play anyway. We could use another PG.

More players =/= more quality players. A couple more warm bodies who aren't good enough to get on the court would be pointless. We need more quality players, but they need to be post players. How would 2 more guards on the roster help us? It wouldn't at all. Our problems are primarily a lack of rebounding and post offense.

Tarrant really isn't that good though. He's a lot like Marshall Henderson. If you shoot enough, you'll score a lot. He's making 37% of his shots this year overall and less than 30% of his 3s. That is terrible for a guy who is taking 12 shots a game, half of which are 3s to score 15 points. With our offensive struggles, the last thing we need is a chucker who is going to take a poor shot every time he gets his hands on the ball beyond the 3pt arc. He also turns the ball over almost as often as he picks up an assist. That just isn't the kind of player we need. We already have a couple in Releford and Lacey. We need a distributor PG like Pressey or Wilbekin.

We need bodies. We cant run press the whole game then expect to come down and have a fast pace offense like we did the other day when we only rotate 1 or 2 wings. Not to mention that a couple of our guards Steele and Lacey dont look like they could do too much running.

I'm a body. I think I still have eligibility left if I take the GRE and enroll in grad school at UA. I doubt I would be an asset to the team.
We need good players. A warm body is worthless if it can't contribute anything in a game.

You would be a body that was a walkon. There are quality players that arent ranked high that get looked over. Thats what im saying. I dont know what the hell your talking about.
Posted on 2/18/13 at 3:43 pm to Tide or Die87
I'm only talking about in Grant's tenure. Nored, White, and even Watford's recruiting were all done with by the time Grant was hired. The 2009 class just came at an awful time. Tarrant was in the 2011 class and every one of the guards we got that year including Retin could average 15 points on at least 36% shooting if they were at Tulane and took the amount of shots Tarrant takes. Are there going to be a few Grant will let slip away? Yes. Even if he was the perfect recruiter that would happen occasionally.

A body is a body. Most kids who play at D2 programs would be walk ons at D1 programs.

That happens every year to every program. Some kids are just really late bloomers. We are going to miss a few. Taking annual gambles on a few kids who are, at best, borderline high major caliber recruits is how you end up with a roster like South Carolina's. Grant's problem is that he doesn't seem to ever have a backup plan, so when we miss on some guys we just don't fill those scholarship spots because we don't seem to even recruit other players. If you miss on the ~#30 player in the country but pick up the #85 player instead that's fine. If you miss on the #30 kid and sign a guy without a single D1 offer just to fill a scholarship you are going to frick your roster up.

Yea we need to take gambles. We arent a power house where he can just pick and chose. Taking a decent player is better than having nobody.

We really don't. The 1 in 100 chance that a guy blossoms in college isn't worth the risk of him just being a bench warmer for a couple of years before transferring to a mid major for more PT.

It just isn't. There's no point on filling a roster spot with a kid who you don't think will be able to contribute to your program just because of the off chance that he develops into a good player in 3 or 4 years. You want 5 guys like Carl on the team? Because constantly taking gambles on guys like that will have those results eventually. Sure you make strike gold every once in a while and find a kid like Isaiah Canaan or Damian Lillard, but the chances are slim.

So your one of those guys who says we need to just save the scholarships for next class then we end up saying it again. OK
