I agree with this. I think it is telling he pretty much just turned down a program that’s a traditional borderline blue blood that’s closest to his home(not that anything is all that close to South Dakota).

If he’s not leaving for raises at Penn St or Michigan I’m not sure there a job in college football that would lure him. The only way anyone ever thought he would was to be back in the Midwest

Turning down Michigan and Penn State is probably a sign that he's not going to be leaving here other than by the NFL itch.

Michigan isn't even a borderline blue blood. They're arguably the OG blue blood. They're the winningest NCAA football team and 2nd all-time in winning percentage. They have 12 claimed national titles. They're also not hinging that resume on wins from before the USSR existed or while it did exist. They have recent success and have been broadly competitive for decades.

If he's not taking Michigan's calls. I doubt he's going to be interested in anybody else in the college ranks.

Yeah? Who would you bring in to replace him? What kind of roster turnover would you anticipate if he left?

I would give a look at the Georgia DC to start with. Roster turnover? I would imagine there would be some on the offensive side.Would hate to lose some of those guys. But that’s part of it. Get your money and go get some good ones.

Yeah the only reason I say borderline is because they’ve won 1.5 championships since integration.

Nebraska is a blue blood too, but I can’t see them getting back to relevancy. Michigan has a better shot but they haven’t been able to win at the highest level very much.

I’ll be honest, I don’t like it at all. I think he is good, and I think we would have a hard time replacing him; but I don’t think he’s a long term answer. Hope I am wrong though

Norvell tries to play the Transfer Portal like a Temu Lane Kiffin.

DeBoer is building this program in his image from the high school kids and supplementing with portal pieces.

Huge difference.

Ever since he let a 13-0 team quit on a consolation bowl game against the defending national champion, he's below .500 and FSU is only retaining him because they can't afford to fire him.

Well Norvell extension coincided with his downfall. I mean I hope this is different of course but we just laid a total egg and got embarrassed on the field last weekend. Program is on a roller coaster and no one really knows how this thing will turn out in 3-5 years.

Hopefully we go to Norman and become the first team to win a true road playoff game.

Well God forbid you be honest around here.

I think he’s a good coach but would love to see us more physical and meaner on offense which is what he coaches.

Norvell was bad before the 13-0 season, and the glaring issues like not having an FBS level second or third string QB behind a six year senior were there. His recruiting sucked too

Equating this to Norvell is silly. Norvell’s ranked record in six years is worse than DeBoer’s just this year

DeBoer also had his contract largely guaranteed to begin with. If he wanted to coast he wouldve done it already. His buyout is 60M right now

I’m in the…..Glad DeBoer is in our boat but hesitate about extending any coach that hasn’t won anything and is still in year 2….boat

Not sure why it’s a such a controversial thing to say.

We’ve had some stinkers under DeBoer. He does need to get his players in, true. He did have to follow the GOAT and high expectations which is tough. He does need 3-5 years to show what he can do.

Lots of unknowns and the dude is currently on year 2 of eight year. $87MM contract.

With that being said; IF Michigan is hiring him….theres no reason they would rush it. They would wait until 1 January. As the buy out is reduced by $1MM (25%). After the playoff run, more than likely.

Not with the portal he shouldn't. We are also going from 85 to 105 on scholarships.

Right, that is my thought. I don't want to lose a coach this way because it will be really damaging to a program that is in a transition anyway.

However, DeBoer hasn't really earned the extension on the field. He's earned it because of the market conditions.

Frankly, unless Friday is an embarrassment, I think he bought himself a lot of time by not losing to Auburn. By the skin of their teeth, but his cajones are partly why that happened. It stings to lose an SECCG or a road playoff game, but at least he made those postseason benchmarks by year two.

If the extension increases the buyout number then Sexton might've put a force multiplier on the time he bought for transitioning the program this season. If we're talking essentially a reset on the buyout burndown then it may be 2030 or slightly after before Alabama could afford to move on if things go poorly.

Extensions can be something as simple as raises for position coaches, increased NiL promises, etc.

It’s a win-win. Obviously other teams are wanting our coach. This shows a commitment from both sides. I highly doubt we’re raising his salary or buyout astronomically. Just an amount that is warranted from a SECCG and Playoff appearance

Ultimately, I pay very VERY little of this man's salary so it means nothing to me other than I want my school to have flexibility in the medium to long term future.

It definitively got him off the market during a bad time on the calendar to be in a coaching search. That solves a more serious problem that existed today. You've got to take care of the problems in front of you first before worrying about tomorrow's problems.

If all he wanted was an NIL commitment and more money to hire position coaches, I'm good with that too.

For sure. We haven’t had to pay a buyout since 2006 and that was an extremely small buyout. Some schools have paid the GDP of small countries in buyouts since then.

I don’t anticipate us having to do it, but if we did I’m sure we have a nice little war chest accumulated from the Saban years. And I wish we’d use it to build a basketball arena.
