What's frustrating to me is that it feels like 90% of our turnovers are avoidable.
Sometimes you get your pocket picked or a guy jumps a passing lane, that's just good defense. Our turnovers seem to come more often than not when a guy leaves his feet without a clear plan and ends up just desperately getting rid of the ball to no one specifically. Our second biggest turnover issue seems to be guys picking up their dribble, again without a plan. We learned at a very young age that you only pick up your dribble to shoot the ball or pass the ball. Holloway seems to be the only guy on our team of veteran players that bounces the basketball until he's ready to get rid of it. Part of that id a guys confidence in his handle, but it's maddening to watch Sears or Nelson pick the ball up without any sort of plan

The main thing with the turnovers is most of our guys can’t dribble worth a shite. Nelson and sears particularly.

quote:We can definitely improve, but we're going to have more turnovers than most teams, even on a per-possession basis, because our offense is predicated on early quick-decision passing and because we drive the ball deeper in the paint on average than other teams. You're much more likely to get stripped or mishandle the ball driving from the arc to the rim than you are taking two dribbles and attempting a midrange jumper. It's still way more efficient in the long run, but it results in some lost possessions. That's why it's critical that we are a good offensive and defensive rebounding team.

Some are an expense of the tempo and scheme we run. We can’t fully turn those off without changing who we are and losing the benefits of our pace. As others have said, we are a goddamn machine when we are getting shots off (#2 efficiency, #2 in 2pt conversion, #12 in effective field goal, #17 in offensive rebound percentage, #18 in free throw rate)
But a lot are in the halfcourt

Our main repeated turnover issue is teams being able to bog us down for stretches by harrasing and fighting to prevent the Big to Guard screen/handoff on the perimeter. (Texas did it at very well times but they probably ran out of steam that’s also why we’re so tough with our depth).
We have some issues like Philon (decisions, getting baited into passes) or Grant (not super strong with ball in traffic) but many of our other turnovers are “collateral damage.”
Like TideCPA says, with the way we play, I’d say 10 or 12 a game is expected. Quite a few every game are simply passes that only have a 66% success rate but it’s a 100% dunk if completed or a 80% pass that will result in a wide open 3. Those are necessary to the entire way we play and keep constant pressure on an opposing defense.
What we need to work on is when teams are guarding us well on the perimeter switches not just having Sears dribbling around for 10 seconds trying to pass or drive.
Also, both Cliff and Mo make some turnovers on the perimeter in these situations and that kind of prompts Sears to over dribble even more.
If I had the easy solution, I’d apply for the job though.

I will do this a lot but I think we all need to just take a moment to appreciate how good we have it. I was a student during the Mark's Madness era. I went to Avery Johnson's first game. But we are in the midst of a sustained level of success that would have be unfathomable when I was in college.

If you make a 60/40 pass that leads to a 100% chance for an easy score (i.e. a dunk) then you should make that pass every time. I don't mind those.
I mind the ones where you're like, "What did you expect to happen there?" which happens 4-6 times a game it seems like.
I don't know how you track those, but they seem to be higher this year than in the past.

Still not shite compared to the ol Quinerly/Shackleford rim drives, where they'd throw up the dumbest layup attempts, hoping to get fouled.

90% of Alabama's turnovers are from over dribbling.
That's it!
We should just run the offense through Aden Holloway and that'll help the turnover situation.

I will say this.
Every single team we play has IMPEDED Mark Sears. Heck, Texas was dam near playing football with him.
He gets FOULED so much and over half of the fouls aren't called.

Agreed. He was getting fouled very clearly last night. Texas just sucks as a team so it didn’t matter last night. But against a high level opponent it will be a problem.

Is your glass ever half full? Does it not get old to see life this way? Try to say something positive every once in a while. You can re-train your brain.

Jarin was the best player tonight. Give the dude some credit. People on this board have been bashing him all year. All he has done recently is play hard on the defensive end, start to post up more and finally find his stroke a bit.
