A way too early discussion about next year - defense and special teams

I think most of us feel the offense is in fine shape at almost every position (especially if Jalen stays - regardless they do need to sign another QB in this class).

Defense - With the sheer number of departures expected AND the loss of a DC, how big of a drop off is there? I’m not talking a huge collapse here, for I believe the injuries this year will help many who were not going to see the field get a bit more ready. However I am concerned a bit about the secondary.

Special Teams - Will see a drop off from Scott - kinda hard to not go anywhere but down there, but how much down? As for placekickers, we have not had much luck with the so-called “top kickers” signed.

Offense should be pretty incredible.

On defense, I think the front 7 will be fine. The concern is in the secondary obviously, which is why recruiting over the next 3 weeks is huge. Need to sign a couple more studs back there.

Special teams, who knows? DeLong and Boulavas are the guys it looks like.

I expect us to win the West and play UGA in the SECC for a chance to get to the playoffs. How our secondary and special teams shakes out will determine our season IMO.

I realize that there is a limit on coaches you can have on staff that can actually communicate with players, but how we havent already hired a kicking “consultant” on staff is beyond me.

Scott will be sorely missed, no matter who we bring in. We had arguably the best punter in the country for 4 years straight... would love to see us go for an Aussie punter.

Defense is a big question mark, but it seems like most of the years that Saban has been here, people have been wondering how we will replace the defensive production. Somehow we always manage to do so!

Since Payne is probably leaving there maybe a drop off on the line especially against the run but our pass rush will probably #1 in the country. Our offense with Tua will be elite

Agreed Saban always manages to re-load. Also agree with the front 7 being our bread and butter again next year. With the guys up front and the "2's" behind them, I hope we see a pass rush like 2015-2016. Able to put a lot of pressure on the QB with the front 4. If that is the case, we will be able to help the new DB's acclimate and grow without getting burned.

Now that the title has been won, the defensive injuries of this season will be a big help in 2018. We built a lot of depth out of necessity.

Just going to have to wait and see about special teams. We were all melting about PK after the spring but even with the last second miss against UGA, Pap turned out to be a pretty serviceable player.

Absolutely.

18 of 25 (72%) for the season

Something like 14 of 16 inside 40 yards.

Those numbers put him mid-pack for D1 kickers. Nothing special, but could have been a hell of a lot worse - which is the very definition of serviceable.

Huge loss, maybe the biggest loss going in to next year. Saban has no problem reloading the Offense/Defense, but it gets a little sketchy when he is replacing his kickers.
