Just a few random thoughts.

Some have said that Saban tends to play favorites with veterans when perhaps younger guys deserve to play more. Some look at the same situation and praise loyalty shown to veteran players.

I am not at all close to any players on the team, so I don't know. But my impression of B. Sims is that he's been a very positive, supportive, hard working teammate for the past four years. He may have doubted at times if he would ever get his chance, given commentary over the years about possibly moving him to WR, watching Bama sign one 4 star QB after another, etc.

I look at Sims and Coker, and it's hard for me to believe that the gap between them is greater than what existed between McCarron and P. Sims going into 2011. But the reality seems to be that Sims is the guy until Coker clearly passes him.

As a coach, you want to have 5th year seniors, don't you? The maturity, the leadership they can bring. So at the same time, don't you have to give them an opportunity if they've proven that they deserve it? Unless they've been clearly beaten out, obviously.

Team chemistry is also an elusive thing. A coach knows it when he sees it, and he knows when it's bad, and how it can negatively affect a team. If a guy, especially a QB, is respected by his teammates, how much of that may play into Saban's decision to play him...and is that necessarily a bad thing? Players want to win...so if the other guy gives them the better chance to win, I'm sure that's what they would want. But we're not talking about an OT. How much of that leadership that a QB has to exhibit has to be built upon relationships that take some time to develop? If Coker was starting his second or third year with us, might he have been the starter?

Like I said...random thoughts. I guess I'm just saying that I actually find it a positive, not a negative, if Saban is loyal to a 5th year senior like that. I think it's a good thing for the big picture of the overall program. If you agree to come to Alabama, work your tail off, and do everything that's asked of you, you'll be rewarded.

So if part of the reason Sims is the starter at this point is because he's a veteran leader on the team and his teammates respond to him...even though he may be less talented...I'm good with that.

Until he gets us beat. Hopefully that won't happen!

I think something that has been largely overlooked is the way in which CNS conditions his QBs. Decision making, protecting the football, and managing the game are the qualities that he drills into each one of them. It may seem like a simple concept, but most QBs view themselves as the stars and feel pressured/obligated to make big plays which sometimes results in forcing things. AJ and CNS have talked candidly about how it took AJ a couple years before he really "got it".

Sims has had several years to learn the Saban way and that is the primary advantage (along with knowledge of the playbook) that he has over Coker IMO.

That. But something I also think people need to consider. I hate seeing people say Coker isn't as good as people thought because he didn't play. We don't know if he's as good as some thought or not, the whole thing with Jake was always potential. By all indications, he has that talent, he's just behind Sims in chemistry and decision making. Stuff like that.

But there is a reason the battle is still ongoing. I'm excited to see what Coker can do so we can get some answers.

Soooo Morris could be better?? But we don't know right? Because we were deprived the opportunity to see Morris

If Jake was as good as people thought, he would of played. End of discussion

It's Blake's team people

I don't see how that matters

No one with common sense believe race matters to anyone who our QB is in 2014.

I've seen people on this very board claim the only reason some posters were pulling for Sims is because they have something in common (skin color).

I for one do not care which plays as long as we win. But the actions by the coaching staff shows that Blake gives us the better shot to win. I will admit that he scares the ever living frick out of me.

I guess to be fair, I have seen people who do this. I've seen people admit to it to. Won't repeat their exact words for obvious reasons, but it was a little messed up.

There are probably a few people who didn't want him to start for that reason too.

Wasn't at you. Was directed at the actions in which we were speaking of.

I think it could partly be a recruiting move. The roster can't be complete with all big name guys who get drafted in the first round. If you want the career backups to believe they will get a chance to play you have to give Sims a chance to play.
