Saw this article today from the coaches meeting. I doubt it will pass because it makes entirely too much sense.

During their meeting at the 2025 American Football Coaches Association convention, coaches supported the move to a single portal window from Jan. 2 through Jan. 12, starting for the 2025-26 academic year. Such a move would eliminate the current portal windows in both December and April with the single, shorter window. The recommendation now moves to the NCAA oversight committee and ultimately the NCAA Division I council for final approval, which is far from guaranteed.

Can anyone explain to me like I’m 10 why the portal has to open during bowl and playoff season?

Why wouldn’t you open it afterwards so kids aren’t incentivized to opt out and transfer?

It's because the kids still go to school so new players need to enroll and universities have hard cutoff dates when you can enroll for the spring semester.

For Alabama for example Jan 15 is the last day for add drop for the full spring semester but every school is different.

Then why not push it past the spring semester and have them all transfer in one window after spring camp?

You could but it's kind of a waiste of spring practice if all the new players you need aren't there and all the guys who are going to leave anyway are getting reps. Now you could move spring practice to summer or add additional practice. It used to be schools didn't want to pay for all their kids to go to summer school but those days are long gone.

You have to remember this is the coaches’ proposal. They want these guys there to go through spring. They want to know what their roster is going into and coming out of spring.

It has to be moved or it’s not sustainable.

No other professional sport with free agency has its free agency period during its playoffs.

If they can’t figure it out so that the players aren’t financially incentivized to not care about the success of the team I’m not interested in following it anymore.

Since college football is now NFL Lite, just move the date until May 1-10. Then allow schools (if they wish) to have summer camps in June and July.
Say 14 days allowed for each session for players and coaches in shorts and headgears (if wanted). This would allow the new transfers to get up to speed with their new teams.

Yep. We're out in the open paying guys now. I've got no issue with this. I personally think a single post-spring window is the best option. I think it would eliminate some of the knee-jerk transferring that happens, it would give guys a chance to better see their roles, then make a determination.

If that's legitimate, it seems like the staff wants a bridge year to Keelon or Mack and they aren't sold on Ty as that guy.
