Don’t understand bringing in a safety, we have numbers at that spot. I think Battle and possibly Hellams can be a great tandem.
I mean we pushed Mayden out there every game and he was nothing special.

You pushed him out here because those behind him were worse. There is an assumption that every player Nick signs is going to be a great player and that isn't the case. 20% of those he signs each year never plays a meaningful down. 5 and 21 were as average as you can get and still start. It will be interesting to see which players switch positions this spring. You can tell which spots Nick doesn't feel good about because that is where the switching takes place.

Safety is one spot where Nick will lean towards the veteran. I understand the thinking there since it is back end of the defense and you need someone back there that understands the defense. We have not seen a freshman safety come in and play in base defense, and I think that is the reason why.
I think there were more talented guys but those guys understood the defense.

Exactly, it was obvious Battle was significantly more talented than Mayden. Battle rarely got on the field and the only explanation is lack of experience/knowledge of the defense.

If we can find a stud, immediate starter at TE or safety, why wouldn’t our staff consider that option? Lots of other teams are upgrading their rosters through the portal, we found a dominant OL out of FSU last year, seems foolish not to check our options there.

Ed Zackery....Nick understands his issues and if 3174 is in he ballpark then Nick is trying to upgrade the situation at both positions regardless to what the fanbase believe to be depth.
Never confuse numbers with depth

The problem is the numbers crunch.

Battle played every game...just want more experience and i understand it. Guys complain all day about the defense but without experience on the field you cant confuse the offense without confusing your own guys.

They are young. And young at positions that usually call the plays.

Alabama made an offer to rising Texas cornerback LINK ]Ennis Rakestraw earlier this week, as the Duncanville standout has had a surge of interest in his recruitment following his senior season. Of the Tide's offer, Rakestraw told BamaOnLine it was a big one. “It’s immeasurable with words. Since I was eight years old I’ve wanted to go to Bama.”
Rakestraw spoke with Nick Saban after he got the news from Jeff Banks this week and got a visit date locked in. The Lone Star State standout will officially visit Tuscaloosa on Jan. 24. Other visits on his schedule shakeup include Missouri on Jan. 17 and Georgia, another recent offer, on Jan. 31 prior to National Signing Day. Originally Mizzou, Miami and Michigan State were reserved for the remainder of the month.
Among the final contenders, Alabama has long been a program of high interest for Rakestraw. “Ever since I’ve been growing up, it’s just how their defense plays, they play hard,” he said of what stands out about the Tide. “That’s how I pride myself — being physical, fast, and fearless.
“Just watching them as a football team, you’ll learn a lot from a coach like Nick Saban and how he instructs those guys. They have discipline. You can tell he’s very structure-oriented.”

Damn UGA gets last visit

I don't think being last visit is necessarily a big advantage, especially if they're only a week or two apart. It can actually help to go before UGA and set the bar. Also, if Kirby and his staff negative recruit when he visits and it doesn't fit with what the kid learns on his Bama visit it'll backfire on them. For example, Florida got more and the last on campus visit with Timothy Smith right before the early signing period and we still signed him. Saban will probably also go in home the week before NSD.

Why?
No clue. It wouldn't seem like a position that would need one that badly. But that's what a couple of the guys are saying. Haven't seen any names. I'd guess if they went in that direction, it would mean no HS DB will be added. I'd guess it's an either/or thing.

Wouldn't mind getting Otis Reese

With ESD over and only a few spots left I would be surprised the UGA visit is not cancelled if UA pushes on his OV.

According to this article, Otis Reese's strength is run stopping support, but it says he lacks loose hips for quick, fluid change of direction that's needed to excel in 1-on-1 pass coverage:
Second-year surge: Georgia DB Otis Reese (Dawgs247)

I'd like to see someone like Reese as the 3rd safety and/or big nickel.
That safety "safety net" that you can use in spots without exposing his weakness. Able to step in if a younger guy doesn't do as expected.
ETA: Ah, assumed he was a graduate transfer
