Way too Early Mock Class (28; 1 grayshirt)

(Thoughts on Surge's list knowing he is being optimistic/Speigsish .)

A number of west coasters on the list. Usually our west coast players commit relatively early so the later it gets the more nervous I am about them. Hopefully that changes this year.

I hope the Zachary Evans recruitment doesn't become as daunting as the Trey Sanders one. Currently I am hoping for a Jase McClellan flip.

Even though EJ Williams is trending Clemson I would like him to choose Bama more so because he is an in state talent than anything else. I definitely like Henderson and Burton as well.

If Darnell Washington picks us, he will be my favorite recruit. I hope he starts to trend our way more but not holding my breath. I have no confidence in pulling Gilbert at the moment.

On O-line I hope we flip Justin Rogers from Kentucky.

At D-line I think Bama finishes with Guillory and Jackson. God I love me some Mississippi recruiting .

At linebacker what are the chances of Phillip Webb being the guy when it is all said and done? I would love for any of the remaining targets to come to Bama but I wouldn't be shocked if we missed with any of them.

At DB - Joseph, Alford, Williams (and Storey if you count him here) feels like the finish.

This will be very interesting as always. I'm really interested to see what happens with Grimes and if any of the current commits end up elsewhere.

Yeah it'll be very interesting to see how this class finishes up. There's certainly no shortage of strong competition for the very talented players that Bama is after.

That TidalSpiegs projection required several current commits to end up elsewhere -- Clark, Jones, Latham and Morton and noted a couple of other possiblities where I had an or for a spot.

ETA: I think Bama's chances are pretty good with the Cali targets, provided USC doesn't replace Helton with Urban Meyer.

ETA: I haven't seen anything lately indicating that Bama seems very likely to land Phillip Webb. A few "insiders" have said they don't feel good about Bama's chances of landing him.

I'm hoping so, especially for Young and Flowe. With that being said, if you don't count Kaho, the latest west coast commit I can remember is Latu in like early August. The later things seem to go with left coasters the more likely it seems they stay home. Not just for us, I think it applies to everyone recruiting out there.

ETA: To be fair our current staff may allow us to win some of these west coast battles that are later in the cycle.

I think Bama could've landed Penei Sewell, but ended up not having room given what Bama's remaining priority needs were later in that cycle. Kaho wanted in, but Bama was pushing more for Walker and Peterson. So Kaho committed to Washington. Then Pruitt suddenly got hired by UT and we lost out on those two guys.

It does seem like more of the elite prospects out west tend to wait longer to finalize decisions compared to those in the central and eastern regions.

I think Webb could be one of those what seems like an out of no where pick up. He doesn't talk much as far as I can tell and he has visited twice this year and could still do an official. With 3 of the other targets being tough fights out west and Sampah already committed he is intriguing to me. If Webb is on the board at all it makes me wonder how they look at him in comparison to Jordan Banks.

Maybe Latham will end up signing with Bama. Space is tight, so I suppose it depends on what other DLs Bama is able to land. I've seen a couple of insiders say they think he's way underrated and plays with a good mean streak.

Yeah, when you put it that way, I wouldn't be shocked if Bama landed Webb. Looking at our LB needs and commits, another ILB appears to be the only unfilled LB spot in this class. I don't know for sure if Bama's staff likes Webb's or any of our OLB commits' potential to play ILB. I suspect they do feel that way about Webb. Fairly recently Hank mentioned that Bama wants to get Webb back on campus the last week of July and said Webb hadn't set his visit plans yet.

Story's stats are amazing. 9 interceptions while playing both offense and defense? 56 TDs?
He must be helluva athlete.

What happened to Smalls? Is he still in play.

Bama isn't pushing for Smalls at this juncture. They probably won't take but 1 or 2 more LBs, so they're being very selective.

My2Bits asked a similar question a few weeks ago in response to a mock class post I did. Here's a copy of that Q&A:

quote:

What about Smalls? Do we like Banks more than him? Smalls seemed like a certainty in this class and he is a 5-star. What changed?

Tim, Hank and some insider posters have said Bama has cooled on Smalls. They didn't give any details as to why, but just said it's not due to any concerns about his football talent. Bama's staff loves Bank's character and his football talent. They like him as an ILB who's also excellent at rushing the QB from the inside and the edge. Banks really likes Bama's coaches and the program culture a lot too.

It would break the all time record class score by several points. But it's unrealistic to expect that we'll land all of those targets. There's just too much strong competition for elite recruits.

I (or anyone) should've been posting these daily roster countdowns. They're pretty good off-season reading.

Roster Countdown: 18 Bolden, 17 Waddle and 16 Reichard (BamaOnLine)

Counting down the Alabama football roster three players at a time. Next up: wide receivers Slade Bolden and Jaylen Waddle and kicker/punter Will Reichard...

Bama makes Florida standout's top schools list (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama is among the top eight for Lakeland, FL wide receiver Arian Smith.

The four-star prospect announced his final cut (via Twitter) on Monday evening. Along with the Crimson Tide, Auburn, Florida, Florida State Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, and Tennessee made the list.

Nick Saban and company hosted Smith last month on an unofficial visit.

“He said that I was elite and I could be an incredible impact on Roll Tide,” Smith told BamaOnLine of his conversation with the Tide head coach. “I could come and play as a freshman and run track as well.”

Of his top eight, Smith broke down the list with 247Sports' Chris Nee. This is what he had to say about UA making the cut.

"Roll Tide. A football powerhouse, that to be honest I didn’t see myself interested because of rumors, but once I sat down and talked to [Head] Coach [Nick] Saban, watched their practice and talked to the players, it gave them a spot. [Assistant] Coach [Jeff] Banks is a great dude."

Smith also gave insight to 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong (VIP) on the Tide in the mix.

“How they’re a powerhouse and how they offered me to play two sports,” Smith said of what stands out. “I like how they run their academics, how they have it setup for the convenience of their players.”

“How they run their program, it’s really organized,” Smith said. “They’re serious and get to the point. I was at their practice and how they treat their players, how it’s setup it’s perfect.”

Smith said he talks with Crimson Tide assistant Jeff Banks “a lot.”

He told Wiltfong that at the moment, he feels best about UGA, a program he's visited four times thus far.

Alabama currently has three wide receivers committed in the cycle in four-stars Traeshon Holden, Javon Baker, and Thaiu Jones-Bell . Smith would be a welcome addition to the trio.

At 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, Smith is rated the No. 34 wide receiver and the No. 184 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

247Sports compares the four-star pass catcher to Carolina Panther D.J. Moore:

Possesses a lean sprinter’s build with long arms and big hands. Is currently more developed in his lower body and has room to add substantial muscle mass once he gets in a Power 5 strength program. Is one of the more dynamic athletes in the 2020 cycle as a state champion and runner up in the 200 meter and 100 meter sprints, respectively. Also sports an elite long jump mark. Stars in all three phases for his high school team. Transfers his track speed over to the field with excellent stride length, acceleration and near-perfect running form giving him the ability to pull away from defenses with ease. Is a dangerous threat to score on any touch whether it be as a receiver, rusher or in the return game. Also plays defensive back and could project as a corner at the next level. Shows nice closing speed along with physicality on defense to go with strong ball skills on that side of the ball. Doesn’t play the strongest competition and would benefit from position-specific coaching as he’s a bit raw from a technical standpoint. Should see rapid improvement early in his college career once he focuses on one position. With that said, Smith’s immense physical tools make him one of the 2020 cycle’s more intriguing and high-upside prospects. Projects as a multi-year starter with all-conference and all-American potential and the upside of developing into an early round NFL Draft pick.

Note: 247Sports ranks Arian Smith as the #14 WR and #75 player. An "insider" poster on BOL recently said he's the #2 WR (after Xzavier Henderson) on Bama's board.

4-star WR Arian Smith 6-1/170 FL hudl

I saw where Coach O took a shot across Sopsher’s bow. Basically said that Devonta Lee was the best player on that team.
