Fishback and Bradley were saying on SEC Now that sexton is the best in the conference in pick n roll/high ball screen.people complain that we run alot of pick n roll but we'd be crazy not to because it's one of his strengths. He's so good at getting in the lane and dishing. I'm wondering if maybe wimp suggested that to Avery ...In regards to driving to dish and not always driving to score.

If Avery needs Wimp to tell him the value of passing, especially given AJ's own career, ya'll have a coaching problem.

I'd imagine it has more to do with how long it takes to beat a FR superstar into submission that team play is the best play

I sometimes wish Sexton would look to score more often to be honest. We have no consistent shooters, so even kicking out for a wide open 3 is not necessarily a good thing. Now if he doesn't have a shot then by all means pass to someone who does, but if he has a shot he needs to take it unless Hall is there for an easy dunk.

So - we are no longer allowed to complain about how "terrible" we are on defense. We are now, by a wide margin, #1 in SEC D-Efficiency on KenPom in Conference games. We are #12 nationally in total year defensive efficiency.

1. Alabama (96.2)
2. Georgia (101.1)
3. Auburn (101.2)
4. Mississippi State (101.4)
5. Kentucky (101.4)
6. Missouri (101.6)

#1 in Defensive Efficiency
#2 in eFG%
#4 in TO% Forced
#4 in Offensive Rebound % against
#3 in 2 PT % Against
#4 in 3 PT % Against
#1 in Block %
#2 in Steal %

While the insistence on switching everything infuriates me, Avery deserves a lot of credit for that effort. The fact that they've been able to do that with so many freshman (and a new transfer in Giddens) is incredibly impressive.

Are you sure? Bc reading this board I'd think we didn't know how to play defense at all and Avery has no idea what he's doing

Also - and I am as guilty of this as anyone - but I'm going to try and keep a bigger perspective the rest of the season and not look at things through a "we should be better perspective" except when we just truly shite the bed.

KenPom rankings of the last 12 years of Alabama basketball

1. 2012 Alabama (#27) (NCAAT)
2. 2018 Alabama (#48) (?)
3. 2011 Alabama (#51) (NIT)
4. 2015 Alabama (#55) (NIT)
5. 2017 Alabama (#56) (NIT)
6. 2007 Alabama (#62) (NIT)
7. 2010 Alabama (#63)
8. 2013 Alabama (#64) (NIT)
9. 2008 Alabama (#86)
9. 2014 Alabama (#86)
11. 2016 Alabama (#96) (NIT)
12. 2009 Alabama (#100)

I've criticized our defense some. When it is bad, it is really bad. We have some really good individual defenders, but there have been stretches of a few games where team defense has been atrocious. Somewhat expected with that many freshman playing.

When it is good though, it is obviously really good as these stats show. 2nd half Saturday was the best defense I've seen them play all year.

The defense has definitely progressed throughout the year. That's been really nice to see. Sure, there are still lapses, but not near as frequently (though there were several in the first half against UF).

I'm just hoping we can get to 20 wins and add another during the tournament. 21-12

That's pretty good since we play so many freshmen.
We were definitely a good defensive team last year.

We got absolutely shafted this year. It was the season we beat Georgia at home the last game of the season and again in the first game of the SEC Tournament. I remember going in to the second game against them analysts talking about how it was essentially a play in game for the NCAAT. Then they get in over us. That 2011 team I think was Grant's best team and could have won a game or two had we made the tourney.

I know this is completely irrelevant to this season.

Probably a good thing we missed it. Grant making back to back tourneys would’ve just kept him around even longer

I don't think CAJ has to beat anything into Collin's head, if anything he's too unselfish sometimes. Any narrative or insinuation that he's a ball hog is way off base. I think he's had to figure out when to drive and dish as opposed to looking to score each time .

Meh, I don't think ball hog criticism is way off base. I don't think he's a bad ball hog, but he does have some Kobe in him. He wants the ball because he's confident he can score it every time. I think he definitely has a score first mentality, but he's happy to make a quick pass for an easy dunk. Most of the time when Sexton sets up a play, it's off his own dribble. And a lot of times he's calling for an iso.

Our OOC schedule was pretty bad that year from what I remember. Next year's schedule was pretty fun.

The schedule was so-so. The results were death. More specifically, we were cursed with voodoo in St. Thomas. Find me a worse 3 games stretch for a bubble team than this

L - #102 Seton Hall (13-18)
L - #186 Iowa (11-20)
L - #93 St. Peters (20-13)

Then we added a road loss to #154 Providence (15-17) and lost, I think in Mobile?, to #61 Oklahoma State (19-13). Our best OOC win was #132 Lipscomb - they went 16-13.

We literally went 12-4 in the SEC. 12-4! And we went to the NIT. Lawd. Even with all that, we got royally shafted @ Vanderbilt or we would have gone 13-3 and probably made the NCAAT.

I went to every home game that year. Tony Mitchell was fun to watch.

Ya'll got shafted that year for sure. I'd just say there are some noticeable "why" explanations that you can isolate though

The biggest offense is Grant's scheduling which absolutely tanked RPI #80 at end of regular season vs #47 for UGA

Bama played only 3 OOC teams that had >20 W while there was 8 teams with 11Ws or less. UGA played 5 OOC teams with 22+ W and played only 3 OOC teams with 11W or less

-Bama also had 4L to RPI 100+ teams compared to 0L to UGA's 0L vs RPI 100+
-UGA was 9-8 in Road/Neutral games vs Bama's 6-12, something the NCAAT has appeared to value
- 9/11 L by UGA were to NCAAT at large bid teams with remaining 2 @/Neutral vs Bama
- UGA had L by 10+ in regulations vs 4 10+ L by Bama

The schedule was good enough to make the tournament. The 3 games in St Thomas destroyed our season. We were never able to dig out from it, and the fact that the SEC was really bad and we didn't beat Okie St or Providence made it even worse. That 3 game stretch was as bad a 3 game stretch as I've seen Alabama basketball have in my life.

But, being a bubble team with losses to those 2 Big Six teams (Iowa, Seton Hall) and St Peters...........then you add in these SEC games

@ #119 Mississippi State
#134 South Carolina
@ #128 Arkansas (L)
@ #256 Auburn
#227 LSU
#119 Mississippi State
@ #227 LSU
#128 Arkansas
#256 Auburn

Half our SEC schedule had RPIs > 100, 4 games > 225.

And the ultimate shaft job we got by the officials at the end of the Vanderbilt game in Nashville.

I'm just saying that had Bama's "buy" opponents records not weigh Bama down so badly, Bama's RPI would have been 45-55 and included in the field. Putting Bama in would have caused an absolute riot given who also was left out

Keep in mind that no team >RPI #67 has ever made the field

Bama 21-11 RPI #80

Others left out:

-VTech 21-11 RPI #62
-Colorado 21-12 RPI #65
-St Mary 25-8 RPI #46
-Wichita 24-8 RPI #60
-Cleveland St 26-8 RPI #42

Most of the teams also had better records vs Top 50 RPI teams as well
