If I had to pick one of our guys to have on a NBA team, I think I would choose Herbert. I'm not saying he will be the best player, but I think he's the type of player a championship team needs. His floor is a 3 and D guy, but he could really be a great pro I think. Sexton seems kind of Westbrook like, Petty seems like a volume scorer 6th man type.

For all the talk of Sexton and Petty, there are actually several guys I really like for the long term

Reese, Jones, and Smith all look like they could bloom into players you can build a team around.

I just don't think he's been consistent enough to live up to his hype. When he's good, he is fantastic and a lottery pick. When he's bad, he looks like the true freshman he is struggling to adapt to playing better players game in and game out.

I'd argue that this is true for most top 10 lotto type recruits, the difference is Bama's reliance on Sexton's production is higher which makes his job both harder + inconsistency more noticeable

Just look at Deearon Fox's stats from last year, he shot 40% or worse in some 40% of UK's games last year. He just was fortunate enough to have Monk + Briscoe and others to bail him out so nobody paid attention when it happened

It's true. I was thinking last night, IF we can keep Petty and Hall one more year, this team will be infinitely better next year, even without Sexton. Sexton is great, but getting another year of experience on those young guys will more than make up for his loss, I think.

Hmm I'll take the Westbrook-like guy for my NBA team thanks.

I like watching Westbrook play a lot, and he's a great player. I don't think he's the type of point guard you win a championship with though.

It seems like so many teams that we play this year have a stinkin' Steven Garcia moment when we play them.

Agree about having a solid core for the future. As far as sexton goes there's a reason he's so projected high ...It's because of his competitiveness and upside. He makes FTS and plays defense, and gets to rim at will. He's had ups and downs but I think he's gonna find his rythm again

I know we would probably never do it and he would probably never accept but I would love to see Byrnes throw 6 or 7 million a year at Frank Martin to come coach us if Byrnes ever fire Avery.

3 downvotes?? You guys dont like Frank Martin??

Frank Martin is a very good coach and they had a storybook run last season, but he's coached for 11 years and made it past the 2nd round twice (and I LOVE Martin's teams, how he coaches, all that stuff).

He took over a ready made program at Kansas State and was good, not great. He took over a bad program at South Carolina and went 45-54 (15-39) his first 3 seasons before showing signs of life.........and that was in a BAD SEC. And yet, we are ready to run Avery off for going 50-36 and 23-21 in 2+ years?

Just seems like a bit of grass is always greener. I think people would have been ready to chop Martin's head off if he'd started that badly and been 0 for 4 going to the NCAAT after his first 4 years here.

What we have at Alabama right now is a good base/foundation to continue building on year after year. I don’t expect us to get any worse over the next few years bc our team is young and most of them will be here awhile, along with bringing in a nice 2018 class+Mack, and then we expect a great 2019 class including Watford. It’s been very stressful this year but it isn’t as bad as some people make out. We’re still in good shape to make the tourney and have a bright future ahead it looks like. Don’t unbuckle just yet.

I’m just saying, I’ve watched basketball for a LOONG time and I’ve seen good basketball coaches (CM Newton, Wimp, even Gottfired) and I’ve seen bad coaches (David Hobbes, Grant) and right now at this juncture, Avery Johnson is sitting ahead of Grant but he’s light years away from Wimp and CM. Avery is coaching like he’s still in the NBA and it isn’t working. It’s not what these diaper dandies need. You can bash Martin all you want to but he’s at a basketball backwater pretty similar to Auburn historically and he’s put together a Final Four team on the back of one superstar and some upperclassmen role players and a WHOLE lotta hustle. His kids play hard and they learn good fundamentals. And they don’t quit. Wish I could say the same for our team but I’ve seen them get down and quit in at least 3 games this season. I like Avery, and he’s done good things for the program but as a coach, he’s still trying to figure it out on this level and not too well. I was hoping Pelphrey and Pett would pick up his slack but they aren’t and it’s not working well except maybe on the recruiting trail.
I’m just saying I’ve seen enough that imho Avery will never be that guy to get us back to the Wimp days where Sweet 16 was almost a given.

I don't dislike Frank Martin. I just think it would be absolutely insane to throw a $7M salary at him. If you're going to spend that kind of money you might as well go after someone like Tony Bennett and make him tell you no. Hell, $7M would be a massive raise for Bill Self. Might as well call him too.

I was in school when CM was just starting. Coleman would be about 40 pct full. I remember being at a little preseason tournament that we hosted an a guy a few rows down from me was holding a sign up that was about what a joke CMs record was. Wimp was standing there at courtside just glaring at the guy. Then after Wimp was hired, the only time I have ever called a sports talk show was Eli Golds calling all sports. Wimp was under heavy criticism early on because his team wasn't doing very well. I called to defense him because several of his players were playing injured--hobbling around. Eli sort of shot me down and would not defend Wimp--but I was right.. But just in case you have forgotten, they both had a rocky beginning. CM's talent had begun to fall off when he decided to quit as our coach.

Eli didn't start doing Alabama games until after Wimp had been coaching for 8 years.

CM won 40 games his last 2 years and made the post-season both. It wasn't that bad.

Whimp got bounced in the 2nd round with four first round draft picks. Also, there was less parity in Whimp's day, mid majors weren't getting in the tournament unless they won there league.

So South Carolina (a team that plays 6 or 7 fresh and soph heavily) beat UF on the road. And went 3-2 against the toughest stretch in SEC play. @Bama @UGA, UK, TN, @UF. They started off in the SEC at 2-3.

This is my problem with Bama.. how long are we going to use the we are young excuse..there are a lot of young teams across the country but some of them actually show progressions and maturity as the season develops...Bama has not. If we replayed all of our contests we lost, we would lose again.. By the same or worse. And I wouldn't be certain we would beat the teams we have already if we were to replay at this time of the season.

It's up to Avery to get these guys to buy in. HS 1 on 1 streetball, guys standing and watching isn't going to win much at this level as a lot of these guys were the man on their team. We are severely lacking fundamentals. We don't defend shooters, we often don't get back, we make stupid passes, we don't make the extra pass, and take the first shot, oh and we miss free throws...a lot of them.

:(

sure they have. They've won 4 of their last 5 in the league.

Good news. Even after yesterday’s loss, Bama moved up from a 10 seed to a 9 seed in Joe Lunardi’s bracket. He has us playing Florida State round 1
