Video from when Fisher announced Winston as the starter. He was adamant that Coker was just as good, but not as consistent.
I do't know that he's that good, I mean his arm may be bigger, but I don't know if he has the anticipation that Winston has. But I do think the one thing that Coker needs to do is be consistent. It's well known he does have the potential, but he just has to be consistent.
I'm excited to see Sims/Coker compete in real games. I think Coker definitely has more upside, and he could come back next year if he starts, so we have more upside for the future if he starts, as we'll just be in the same boat next year if he doesn't. That said, if Sims is the best guy, Sims should start. He's been all Bama for 5 years now, and he's one of my favorites. He's worked hard to improve, and if he can win the job I'll be incredibly happy for him.
I can only wonder what Saban/Kiffin think about the competition so far. I know I'm completely torn, like I think most fans are. Are they leaning toward the upside, or the guy who has always been about Bama? It's going to be interesting, and it's definitely not a decision they'll be making in camp. Both will likely play against WVU barring injuries (God forbid) and maybe FAU/Southern Miss too. The battle between those two will be more interesting/entertaining than the McCarron/Sims one, imo.

Saban - likes this team, says it has more leadership this year on Offense. Said the team likes each other of the field and is coming together on the field.
Based on his comments I think this team is gonna be very good and the haters are gonna be very disappointed.
Also liked his comments on the prrcieved notion that our defense had been had vs HUNH teams, basically said if your really look at the games we weren't really bad and we did better than most all the other teams did vs those teams. Said the OU game we played bad but the O caused a lot of that with the TOs they had. Shut out Ole Miss and held the 7 pace teams we played to season lows. Sure we could play better but doesn't think we are as bad as people claim vs those teams.

Me too. I can remember last year, Saban mentioned some bad practices. This year he's joking with the media and everything sounds great. That's good to hear. He also said he's encouraged by the OL and they're being physical.

Definitely. TOs against OU killed us. Don't get me wrong, they did do a good job against the defense, but they wouldn't have had those opportunities if Bama held onto the ball.

Stop making so much sense.
I love how people try to blame the defense for the loss to Oklahoma, when the offense completely melted down and left the defense out to dry on multiple occasions.

No shite. 5 turn overs killed us in that game. To this day, I believe the game plan for the OU game was a pass heavy plan oriented to show case McCarron for the NFL. If we would have done an ins season balanced or run oriented game plan then we stomp OU by running it down their throats and playin ball control.
We're gonna wreck shite this year.

Really hoping we use Howard as both a TE and also as a big WR. Think about some of the things guys like Mike Evans and Kelvin Benjamin were able to do, and Howard can provide some of that. He's big and fast. 6'6" 240 and ran a 4.55 in the Spring.
Utilizing him in different ways has to be a priority. we've heard about him lining up in the slot, and that's good, but I wouldn't mind seeing him out wide. You can do so many different things with a guy like Howard.
Put him in the slot and not only can he be used as a pass catcher, but then as a blocker on a variety of plays. Throw a screen to Coop? You've got Howard out there. Outside run? Howard on DBs. It opens up the offense in a way we just haven't had before. Put him out wide? Throw a bubble to a guy like Jones or Black and let them make a play. Obviously there is the back shoulder throw, and then deep shots.
Once the QB, whoever it is, gets settled, I really hope Saban lets Kiffin open up the playbook. I look across the schedule and see no defense that can consistently cover every weapon we have IF every weapon is utilized to the best of their abilities.
I haven't even talked about our backs yet. Drake is dynamic and just hard to get your hands on. Henry is hard to bring down AND has great burst to get away. Yeldon is a balanced, do it all back that ca make anyone miss in the open field and then bowl over Safeties. Fowler, who figures to play a lot as a FB/H-Back, has shown good vision in the open field before and is a load for DBs to bring down.
What Kiffin will try to do is get all these different playmakers into space where they can shine. There won't be so much run this and see what happens, let the QB make the decision off of that. There will be more this play is designed to get this talent into space, and if it isn't there here are a couple of other options that might be. None of that is there you say? Oh look, there is a lane to run through for Sims/Coker.
I'm setting my expectations this high on purpose. I know the offense won't meet them. I know Saban's gonna demand that we run the clock down and slowly grind it out to protect the defense. But damnit I'm hyped for the explosiveness this offense could have.

TOs or not our D couldn't stop their O in the 1st half (played much better in the 2nd half). O and D were equally to blame IMO

I agree
A lot of the defensive breakdowns against OU and even AU were terrible situations for the D to be put in. Last years O relied too heavily at times on AJ when the OL clearly wasn't up to par and the secondary on d had its vast issues from Vinnie getting hurt and EJ hurt to putting a bunch of newbs out there on islands and QBs taking advantage.
The fundamentals of the guys on the DL which can heavily affect the QBs time he has to pick apart a green secondary was atrocious. Seemed like Rumph was really trying to teach 4 man techs and pass rushing to guys in the middle who needed anchoring techs and causing havoc to the interior line rarely happened as a result. That HAS to happen this year...and the OLB has to be effective and I think Pettway will be. There is so much rotational talent it is insane right now.
I'm not worried about Coker or Sims. I think Sims will even come in situationally to spell or runs wildcat play or 2 even after Coker has had a couple good series' or whatever. I'm glad Coker is having to earn the PT, makes him better. I'm a little worried about him stepping and not short striding which causes it to sail a bit but we will see.

I liked seeing the dynamic the Pats had a couple years ago with using Hernandez as a dynamic cog in the offense and Gronk as the athletic TE no one could cover even on deep outs and stuff. I would like to see some of that dynamic with TY FS and OJ, he got is as a TF because he did a lot of the little things right and if Ty can prove he can be athletic enough he can help take the short to intermediate game along with OJ a long way. Bama hasn't had an effective catching dynamic at the TE really since Colin Peek (also a transfer) until OJ got here and he could end up being such a great tool on O. I still would like to see Ty in action but I have a feeling he is an upgrade or he wouldn't have gotten a look to transfer.
The RB stable I believe will work out this way...
Despite even possibly not starting Derrick Henry will be the workhorse and load carrier
TJ Yeldon will be the starter and 3rd down and situational guy, but MIGHT see more carries than Henry. I could see at least 13 - 15 carries
Kenyan Drake is a special talent that will be used as a cog and a weapon, also spell guys out and hopefully be utilized on sweeps etc. he can be really dangerous if used correctly with his burst and speed
Kiffin has shown in previous offensive sets that he doesn't shy away from utilizing all the talent a RB stable has and he won't stop running the rock if it is working. We have a lot of weapons on O without a DC and a D having to worry about a competent or even a good QB so if that is the case with Coker or why the hell not say it, even possibly Sims........LOOK OUT!!! It's Katy bar the door and batten down the hatches. The O was sort of toying with opponents last yr I felt like at times and wasn't even close to their full potential, now it seems like with all the massive praise and production in scrimmages AGAINST a D I believe will be Bama's best since 2011, they might have finally started humming and clicking on some level consistently.

Leon Brown practiced today for the first time since camp started. Geno was dressed out too so apparently his injury wasn't that bad

Looks like Devall has had some type of injury that was keeping him out.
