The Atlanta Braves announced a flurry of roster moves ahead of Monday’s 5 p.m. ET deadline.

The biggest of which was that they decided to pick up Charlie Morton’s $20 million club option for 2024.

They elected to decline the club options for outfielder Eddie Rosario along with relievers Collin McHugh and Kirby Yates.

The club had previously announced that they were declining the option for lefty reliever Brad Hand.

Morton will remain in the ATL for 2024. He is a fan favorite, but likely not worth the $20 million he'll receive.

Pierce Johnson re-signs with Braves for 2 years, $14.25M
Right-hander's deal includes $7 million club option for 2026

The deal covers Johnson's final two years of salary arbitration, as well as his first year of free agency, if the Braves exercise the team option for 2026.

Looking to strengthen their bullpen ahead of the Trade Deadline, the Braves targeted Johnson, despite the fact he posted a 6.00 ERA over 43 appearances for the Rockies. With Colorado, Johnson had a 7.23 ERA and a 25.7% strikeout rate in 25 appearances at Coors Field compared with a 4.11 ERA and a 38.7% strikeout rate in 18 road appearances.

Johnson proved even better than expected away from offense-friendly Coors Field. He posted 0.76 ERA and had a 36% strikeout rate over 24 regular-season appearances (23 2/3 innings) for the Braves and then completed three scoreless appearances in the National League Division Series.

The strategy should be to win your division but have the least amount of wins of the division leaders, even if it means tanking some games. This puts a team in the best position imho.

I HATE the wildcard series. There should only be 4 teams that make the playoffs per league. If you want to play in October, win more games. FFS.

I really hope they don't sign Tommy Pham. Holding out hope they let Rosario go to sign a difference maker in left.

I would imagine Matt Tuiasosopo becomes the third base coach? Filled in for Ron Washington during the season at one point. He’s the current Triple-A manager.

Well, in other sports news AA went out and got us a couple dogs while we were distracted by football.

Kelenic in LF and Sale to round out the rotation. AA is truly a genius, and the most important contract left to sign is the one keeping him in Atlanta forever.

1. Strider
2. Fried
3. Sale
4. Morton
5. Elder/AJSS/Waldrep/Ynoa/Vines/Anderson back at ASB etc..

1. Acuna RF
2. Albies 2B
3. Riley 3B
4. Olson 1B
5. Ozuna DH
6. Harris CF
7. Murphy C
8. Arcia SS
9. Kelenic LF (only to get him more fastballs and take the pressure off until he adjust and gets going, but hopefully a future no.5/6 in the order- (former no. 6 pick in mlb draft)

super utility David Fletcher. A+ glove at every infield position and LF RF Acquired from the Angels.

This team is LOADED, and this is the most excited I've been for spring training in a long time.

Braves lacked some fire personality wise and Kelenic and Sale especially are both dawgs.

Switch Kelenic and Harris.

Agree that this team is loaded and Sale being a dog. Hopefully revenge will be in their minds. L.A. will be a tough out this year. Need to fricking BURY Philly. Make them remember doing the fricking chop last season. Phuck Philly.

The word on Kelenic is he can struggle with offspeed pitches at times.

I think he would benefit the most with the extra fastballs in front of Acuna.

Also, this is the year Harris breaks all the way out. I think he's a 20/20 slam dunk this year. It's time he moves up in the order IMO.

I always liked the idea of a lead off guy in the 9 hole. Harris would be the lead off hitter if Acuña wasn't on the roster. I always liked hitting the pitcher 8th before the DH came.
Harris is a 20/20 guy no matter where he hits. If Kelenic turns out to be a hole in the order, he'll be easier to hide batting 6th or 7th than 9th. Having a contact hitter ahead of Acuña is the way to go.

Well Harris definitely hits well in the 9th, but honestly i was hoping he would turn into more of a bat to ball guy with higher average and take that 2 spot from albies who is always gonna have a lot of swing and miss, but i dont think theyll move him that far up to start season. 9th 2nd or 6th lol.

LATEST NEWS

Jan. 26: Braves acquire J.P. Martínez from Rangers

The Braves gained more outfield depth by acquiring Martínez in exchange for Minor League right-handed pitcher Tyler Owens. Martínez debuted for Texas last year and hit one homer while posting a .575 OPS over 44 plate appearances. The 27-year-old left-handed-hitting Cuban outfielder produced a .961 OPS over 353 plate appearances at the Triple-A level last year. There is still a need for the Braves to add a right-handed-hitting outfielder to serve as their primary backup outfielder.

Jan. 5: Braves sign INF Luis Guillorme and RHP Huascar Ynoa

Guillorme signed a one-year, $1.1 million deal, and Ynoa avoided arbitration with a one-year, $825,000 deal. Guillorme, who produced a .675 OPS over the past three seasons with the Mets, will likely serve as Atlanta's primary backup infielder. Ynoa missed last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He will provide starting pitching depth.

Dec. 30: LHP Chris Sale acquired from Red Sox for INF Vaughn Grissom

Atlanta pulled off a significant trade with Boston, adding veteran left-hander Sale, a seven-time All Star, in exchange for a promising young infielder in Grissom. The club hopes Sale can contribute on a regular basis in the starting rotation -- which would be notable, since injuries limited him to just 11 starts from 2020-22.

“There’s health history, and I understand that’s going to be a topic,” Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos said. “But we think he’s a playoff-caliber starter and that’s what we were in the market for this offseason. We’ll make sure to do what we can to keep him on the mound."

Braves sign SS Jose Perdomo to $5 million bonus, per report

The deal that has long been expected will be made official today, with Venezuelan shortstop prospect Jose Perdomo signing with the Atlanta Braves. Perdomo received a $5 million signing bonus, as reported by Baseball America’s Ben Badler, the largest bonus among the 2024 class and the largest in the club’s history. The Braves have not confirmed any signings yet. The Braves have frequently dipped into the Venezuelan market for their top talent, with Ronald Acuna Jr. being their most notable major leaguer. They have also given large bonuses to Kevin Maitan, Abrahan Gutierrez, Diego Benitez, Douglas Glod, and Luis Guanipa in recent classes.

This was from Jan 15th. Won't be a difference maker this year, but the kid apparently has a lot of talent.

Really high on this kid. Big bat, and they think he can stick at SS which is what the Braves really need.

A lot of scouts out there comparing him to Miggy at the same age.

“It’s not a secret I want to be a Brave for life,” Acuña said through an interpreter. “I hope I can stay here forever and hopefully we can make that happen soon.”

Acuña’s value skyrocketed last year as he produced one of the most impressive seasons in MLB history. To point out the reigning National League MVP constructed just the fifth 40-homer, 40-steal season ever recorded might seem impressive. But that’s also underselling what he accomplished while hitting 41 homers and tallying a modern franchise record with 73 steals.
