Like 80% of lower body amputations in the US are from diabetes. Probably a lot higher for African Americans over 50. Not exactly a mystery.

Just had a friend of mine who was diagnosed with diabetes years ago and flat out didn't do anything. Didn't change diets, kept drinking, didn't exercise, didn't take his medication. You lose the nerve endings in limbs and you have infections set up that you don't know because you can't feel them. He lost both legs at the thigh last summer.
