There's always something not crazy about the crazy things Mike Leach says. This time around Mississippi State's head coach has ideas on how to change the NIL landscape and according to him, he wants to treat them like professionals. Per Sports Illustrated...
quote:

Fifteen months into the era of name, image and likeness (NIL), Mike Leach has come to a realization like so many within the industry: College sports have been professionalized. And it is time, he says, for college athletes to become professionals. It’s time for a player draft. It’s time for salary caps, for trades and for player cuts.

Caught in a purgatory between amateurism and professionalism since NIL was legalized in July 2021, college sports should take the full leap into the latter, the Mississippi State football coach says.

“This should not be a masquerade party of professionals. Are you a professional or are you not?” says Leach during an interview in his office earlier this week. “Instead of sitting here and having 17-year-olds lecture everybody that they are professionals, well, let them be professionals. It’s one [amateur] or the other [professional]. Right now, we’ve got this whole mysterious stratosphere of people wiggling all over back and forth.”

“With professionals comes responsibility,” he says. “Yeah, you will potentially make more money. But you are drafted and can be traded. That’s what professionals do. This college football group [of administrators], they are all shocked by that. Why are you shocked by it? Name one league of professionals who don’t do it that way.”

"It’s one [amateur] or the other [professional]" This is key right here....pay taxes and all the bells and whistles of being a pro too. I am hoping there are schools that realize that they can't manage the new NIL rules, and decide to break off to make a league that goes back to the old school way of things. Players sign up knowing they can't get NIL money and if they decide to leave to the new pro-minor college ranks then they have to pay back the scholarship. A league for kids that want to get a solid free education, but know their chances to make it to the NFL is tiny. Enjoy college as an amateur.

Nick Saban will NOT like a player draft!

"A'ight, what we have here is inequitable and not in the players' interest. We need to keep things fair and go back to amatuerism."

Given one of the biggest advantages of LSU has been on how well they kept LA talent locked down….kinda surprised at all the comments of people eager to throw that away.

Currently all ADs are non profit organizations separate from the school they represent. If you make this a pro model, wouldn't that big SEC check have to be taxed as income?

Drafting them out of high school? Those kids aren't going to go for that?

Oh great, I am a South Florida 4* that just got drafted by Idaho State...this should be fun.

Y’all supporting this? This would be the dumbest shite ever. Every team has 2 of the top 300? Who picks first? How is that decided? You’d be fricked not picking early in a draft of 100+ teams.

I'll stop watching college football entirely if something like this happens. I already watch zero NFL ball.

You can’t make players go to a school they don’t want to go to. Stupid idea

Additionally, I can see why Leach wants this. Mississippi state can absolutely never become relevant within the current NIL landscape. Of course he wants a different way.

Yeah, you can. If you are a professional (as Leach is saying they are) then you go where you are drafted.

I am surprised by the downvotes. I am sure a 5 star player from Texas who gets “drafted” by Maine would be excited to play there. This is a dumb idea. If they want to do this, let’s just stop calling it college football and move it out of college altogether and make it an NFL minor league. That is what they are saying anyway
