Former LSU Football player Booger McFarland was on the Pardon My Take podcast on Wednesday and discussed LSU's ongoing coaching search.

McFarland's primary focus was that LSU's next coach must embrace the culture. He also said he was confident in Verge Ausberry to make the right hire. Per On3:
quote:

“Well it’s funny because like I’ve never been like a true fan,” former LSU star Booger McFarland said on the Pardon My Take podcast. “And so, to be on social media and watch Florida’s fanbase, LSU’s fanbase, Ole Miss’ fanbase go crazy over every rumor, every flight, every this, every that, like it’s kind of funny to me, because I’ve been on the other side. I’ve never been like that wound up about anything like that.

“To answer your question, I’m not sure. I think LSU’s the No. 1 job in the country. I think there are several people who are … would do a lot to get that job. Whether it’s Lane or not, I don’t know. Whether it’s somebody else, I honestly have no idea.”

“I just know the next coach at LSU has to embrace the culture,” he said. “Like saying ‘y’all’ and ‘family’ can’t be something that has to be taught to you on the way to the press conference. You have to be able to understand what it’s like in the Southeastern Conference.”

That said, McFarland is fairly confident in the direction the LSU coaching search is about to take. He likes the leadership the school has appointed to make the decision.

“Our athletics director Verge Ausberry played football at LSU,” McFarland said. “He’s been there 30 years. He’s the guy making the hire. So I honestly have no doubt this hire’s going to be a home run, whether it’s Lane or whether it’s somebody else.”

I agree with Booger that the next coach needa to be all in the way we do it down here in Louisiana and that it's more than collecting a paycheck!

I dont give a frick what a coach eats, or what accent he uses, etc. He just needs to win, period! All the other bullshite is only worried about when the team fails,

I don't understand the talk about culture. Because of this talk, that is why Kelly felt he needed to talk like a southerner and made a fool of himself. If they can coach, teach, and connect with the team and are winning I don't think fans will give a crap. Saban was southern, Miles wasn't and they had success. Saban came in and did things his way. He embraced the state as being ripe with talent and tried to build a wall around it.

I don't really care who the next HC is, he just bet not make the same coaching staff blunder BK made from the start. He fire all the Boot connected assistants, it would be smart for the next HC to really consider keeping Frank Wilson and Corey Raymond. Without Frank he will lose this roster and most of this class, and without Corey say goodbye to DJ and those young talented DB's on the roster and the recruiting class. Louisiana LSU culture is to stay connected to the past history and keep our connected ties to the state involving coaches and assistants. BK didn't understand that, he had to be shown that wasting two years of his era. That's why I believe Lane and John Sumrall are the best candidates for the LSU HC job.

I didn’t realize that we say family so differently…news to me

I dont think he needs to be "southern" but he definitely needs to know how to recruit an SEC roster. IMO BK failed in his approach to recruiting lineman on both sides the ball and secondary players.

Food and accent have the least to do with LSsU football culture.

You do not turn down input from former players like Andrew Whitworth and other LSU icons. You damage relationships. It is disrespectful and you damage the brand and culture.

Some clarity on LSU culture. It is about respecting Louisiana tradition and relationships. You don’t fire a Kevin Faulk. His LSU and SEC records represents Louisiana footballl power. It helps fortify the brand and history. That brand helps to keep talent home. We kept the top Lineman in the country home. Texas Tech paid a lesser player 6 times as much. Respect the tradition. As Birdman puts it, “Put some respect on my name!” We are LSU and we are Louisiana. We play football hard. A new coach must respect that and nurture our Louisiana football tradition and relationships. That is what football culture is all about.

That "embracing of the culture" better damn sure include "winning consistently", or they'll be introduced to some Purple & Gold "Cancel Culture"......

Agree with Booger. Frank Wilson would check most of his boxes.

Frank has to stay here, not as a head coach but as a major part of this program.
