Former LSU star pitcher was named the NL starter for the upcoming MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 16. Per MLB:

Paul Skenes' sensational rookie season is about to hit an even brighter spotlight: The Pirates' young ace will start for the National League in the 2024 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard. Skenes received the news from NL manager Torey Lovullo, who surprised him during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show on Friday.

Just four rookie pitchers have started the All-Star Game, per the Elias Sports Bureau: Hideo Nomo (1995), Fernando Valenzuela ('81), Mark Fidrych ('76) and Dave Stenhouse ('62). But Skenes' achievement is even more notable: His 11 starts would tie Fidrych for the fewest in a career entering an All-Star start (Fidrych also made two relief appearances).

Skenes had a 2.08 ERA in 2023 against the SEC.
He has a 1.91 ERA in MLB.
He’s getting better…much better.
Those poor hitters.

He is the ultimate create a pitcher for a video game. What he is doing at a young age is phenomenal. I am very thankful I was able to see him pitch live at LSU and he won a National Championship. He should have a lot of hardware when he is done

I've only watched 1 all-star game, the one where Bregman won all of those honors...this will be my 2nd.

You could see this coming imo. Skenes was ready for pro ball his entire last year of baseball at LSU. I think he just wanted a national championship and he made that happen as well. Not only will he get better but he will learn how to maximize his strength, velo, health and he can already handle a higher pitch count physically. Of course they will take very good care of him to make sure they keep him healthy but he can handle it as a beginner. That’s very rare. Can’t wait to see what his future has for him.
