Actually, Black Racers (Coluber constrictor) are very beneficial snakes. They will eat other snakes, small rodents, lizards, frogs and toads, and other animals. BTW--the term "poisonous" should not be applied to North American snakes--they are venomous, not poisonous, because they inject venom. Certain toads and frogs secrete poisons through their skin or through large glands on the sides of their heads. A toad can be poisonous to a dog. In Central America, the secretions from Poison-Arrow (or Poison-Dart) frogs are used to tip arrows used for combat.

Not afraid of snakes and that is a harmless one, but if I reached in my golf bag or it was sitting anywhere on the cart, I'm sure I would probably say a few colorful words!

Personally, until proven otherwise, all snakes are presumed to be poisonous or deadly. (If only in the sense that running upon one in a golf cart might send this 67 year old into cardiac arrest!!!)

And a “fat black” snake most certainly can fit the profile of a “Water-moccasin”.

It's a super harmless black snake. We have them all over in South Carolina. Had one on the roof of my 2 story house a few years ago. Had to go up there to get it as I knew if it climbed in through an exhaust vent my wife would never set foot in the house again.
