I know you're mainly on the sports boards, but gators are scared shitless of people. He could have yelled BANG and the thing would have practically skitted across the water to get away.

Not all gators run away. I have had big ones just sit on a sidewalk almost daring me to approach. And one, about 6-7ft, came out of the water and confronted me until I backed away. I always respect alligators, they are not entirely predictable.
